SEGA announced yesterday that everyone Sonic the Hedgehog will be hitting consoles in the upcoming title, Sonic Unleashed.  Developed by Sonic Team, the latest offering is set for release later this year and will be available for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and PS2.

Sonic Unleashed is being built on a brand new “Hedgehog Engine”, which has been under development for three years.  The engine will give the classic platformer a decidedly current generation HD look.  The story will get back to its Sonic Vs. Dr. Eggman roots and shift you between day and nighttime sequences.  Here’s a quote from Gary Knight of SEGA: 

“By combining rich and vibrant scenery with dynamic viewpoints Sonic Unleashed will provide an immersive 3D experience whilst keeping alive the 2D gameplay elements and fantastic worlds that Sonic fans know and love.  In addition to this classic Sonic gaming experience, when darkness sets in Sonic Unleashed players will be able to experience a completely new way to play as Sonic… making this his most exciting adventure yet!”
