TGS 2008: Sony Vastly Improving the PSP's Online Play

Starting October 30th, Sony’s "Ad-Hoc Party" will connect PSPs and PS3s together in an attempt to vastly improve and increase online play.  Owners of both consoles will be able to link them together, using the PS3 as a base for hosting and connecting to online games.

Rarely have developers outfitted games on the PSP with infrastructure mode capabilities (true online play), instead opting for local ad-hoc multiplayer modes.  Well, the PS3 will take advantage of the ad-hoc capabilities.

However, it is unclear whether the new service will be able to take advantage of the ad-hoc functionality built-in to the games we already own, or if it will only be applicable to new titles (or if some kind of patch will be necessary).

The only downsides are that you will have to own a PS3 and play from home.  But, if the new service works as advertised, Sony fans will have a lot more online gaming to look forward to.
