It was a long, long time ago-- Even before the Mana Goddess was born. A great witch from a realm yet unknown brought darkness to the world. Anise was her name. The odious witch was defeated by the guardians of the great tree-- But legend tells that her darkness and curse seeped through and spread over to many other worlds. And yet another legend has it-- When the world was still covered in darkness-- The Mana Goddess used the Sword of Mana to defeat the benevodos that would lead the world to doom... Then sealed them into eight stones. This is how darkness retreated and the world was created. After completing her creation, the Mana Goddess turned herself into a large, wizened tree. It is told that the Mana Tree and the sword continue to watch the world from the forbidden Sanctuary. Time has passed-- Valsena, the kingdom of green fields Ferolia, the kingdom of Beastmen Altena, the kingdom of sorcery Wendel, the holy capital Laurent, the aerial fortress Nevarl, the fortress in the sand The nations of the world were shrouded in a peaceful but fleeting slumber... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [OVERVIEW] Overview Seiken Densetsu: Heroes of Mana is the second game from Square-Enix's Seiken Densetsu series on the Nintendo DS, and is developed by the company Brownie Brown, partly comprised of several former Square-Enix employees who worked on Seiken Densetsu 3. The game is set 19 years before the events of Seiken Densetsu 3, a game which was never released outside Japan, although a very complete and excellent fan translation did do the round on the web. As such, there are several characters in HoM that are either related to characters and events in SD3, or who appear as NPCs in the aforementioned predeceasing sequel (anyone else notice that strange tremor in the force?). The nature of the game is that of a Real Time Strategy game, the same genre as worldwide PC successes Warcraft (the original, not "World of"), Starcraft and Command & Conquer. There are a few differences, which will be detailed later in the guide. The game is heavily touch-screen based (to the point where buttons are rarely used), so have your screen protectors ready (don't worry, it's not as bad as Lost Magic in that respect... I still have the mark of several consecutive Fire Runes on my screen guard). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [FAQ] Frequently Asked Questions Q. Does this game have SD3 included in it? A. No, it does not. There were several online and magazine articles regarding Heroes of Mana prior to release that included screenshots of Seiken Densetsu 3 that were part of the original press pack provided by Square-Enix. These were included for referential purposes, as the game takes place 19 years before SD3 and many of the characters have some form of relation to events or characters in SD3. The game is NOT however included in Heroes of Mana. Q. Is this like Lost Magic? A. Yes and No. Yes, in that you do control one or various main humanoid characters, and in addition several monsters, or MOBs as they are called in the game, that do your dirty work for you. However, Lost Magic had you going out and capturing monsters to then use later, and you could only have a certain set of them which you determine before a mission. In Heroes of Mana you get better MOBs as you progress in the game, and during missions you spawn these MOBs as you need them, again, similar to Warcraft (there are exceptions to this rule for certain missions, again this will be covered in depth later in the guide). Q. Any news on the game's OST? A. Yes, the OST has a release date set for the 18th of April 2007, is comprised of 2 discs, and is available at Play-Asia.com for around $25USD. It is composed by Yoko Shimomura, who also worked on Legend of Mana, Street Fighter 2 and more recently the Kingdom Hearts series. Q. What other games are there in the Mana series? A. In Chronological Release order: -Pre-World of Mana releases: The Emergence of Excalibur (Never Released, cancelled 1987) Seiken Densetsu [1]: Final Fantasy Adventure (GB) - June 8th 1991 Seiken Densetsu 2: Secret of Mana (SNES) - August 6th 1993 Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES) - September 30th 1995 Seiken Densetsu: Legend of Mana (PSX) - July 15th 1999 Shinyaku Seiken Densetsu: Sword of Mana (GBA) - August 29th 2003 -World of Mana releases: Seiken Densetsu DS: Children of Mana (NDS) - March 2nd 2006 Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden (Mobile Phone) - 2006 Seiken Densetsu: Friends of Mana (Mobile Phone) - October 12th 2006 Seiken Densetsu 4: Dawn of Mana (PS2) - December 21st 2006 Seiken Densetsu: Heroes of Mana (NDS) - March 8th 2007 There were also two Manga series created, one based on Legend of Mana (released 2000 in 5 volumes by Shiro Amano) and Princess of Mana (takes place 300 years after CoM, due to be released 2007). Q. What is the timeline of the Mana series? A. Although there are many speculations on the timeline of the games, Koichi Ishii has mentioned that there is not necessarily a relation between different parts of the series. At present we do have several games that are stated to be directly connected, and they are: 1. Dawn of Mana occurs 10 years before Children of Mana 2. Heroes of Mana occurs 19 years before Seiken Densetsu 3 3. Friends of Mana occurs 10 years before Legend of Mana Unconfirmed speculation places Final Fantasy Adventure/Gaiden/Sword of Mana and Secret of Mana as taking place, in that order, after the events of Seiken Densetsu 3. FoM and LoM are suspected to occur on a different plain of reality to the rest of the games. Q. What ties does this have to SD3? A. There are several characters who are either refered to in SD3 or appear in SD3 as NPCs. None of the main characters from SD3 make a direct appearance though. (This answer may change at a later stage, who knows.) Q. Does this game have multiplayer options? A. Yes, there is a Vs. Battle option which allows you to play against someone else with a DS and a copy of the game. Q. Does this game have Wifi? A. Yes, but not for multiplayer options. The Wifi functionality allows you to unlock items and free-battles and compare your ranking with other players. The higher your ranking, the better the items that you unlock. From what I can see, each week a new free-battle option is unlocked. Q. Is there Download Play? A. No, the other player must have a copy of the game. Whether this game must be the same region or not is currently unknown. Q. I've killed everything in Chapter 3 but the mission won't finish! A. Your main Leader Unit, Roget, must reach the gates of the castle (where the Vehicle-type MOB was, for the mission to complete. Q. What is the sword Roget is holding in his hand in the intro FMV? A. It is the Mana Sword. The design follows that which was designed for SD4 and CoM, and has now become the standard artwork for the Mana Sword. Q. Will my gaming experience be hampered if I haven't played SD3? A. No, as the two run on separate systems, and also because the game occurs BEFORE the events of SD3, playing SD3 is not a requirement to getting the most out of this game. However, I would recommend playing SD3 as it is a great game, and the connections add on top of the sole gaming experience. Q. Does this game use the same locations as SD3? Why are the names different? A. The locations are indeed the same, however the romanization of the names differs from the original walkthroughs that were made for SD3 before the fan translation, and later the fan translation names (ie Naba'al, Navarre, Nevarl). Q. Does this game have left-handed mode? A. I'm afraid it does not. The game was designed to only move the map with the D-button. Quite the bum deal for anyone who is left-handed. Q. Does this game have Skirmish Mode? A. If by this you mean the ability to replay already completed maps, then no, you cannot revisit stages unless you start a new game and reach them again (which when you're writing a walkthrough is a major pain). Nor are there randomly generated maps with variable options to play against the computer in a similar way to the DS-to-DS multiplay. There are however Bonus Maps that have new missions using the game's maps for added fun, and extra items for each one. Q. How long is the game? A. There are 26 main storyline missions, playable on Normal and Hard mode, and 43 Bonus Maps. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [CONTROLS] Controls This game is heavy on the use of the Stylus, and you could even play it without pressing any buttons at all (though you would be making your life exceedingly difficult by doing so). You won't get away with not using the touch screen though, so you may want to consider investing in a screen protector and making sure your DS is correctly calibrated. During the dialogue sequences, you need only remember that A (or tapping the screen) will skip to the next line of dialogue, and B will fast-forward through the dialogue like there's no tomorrow (very handy on second play throughs or if you're playing the Japanese version of the game). During the missions, the controls will be as follows: -B button: Speed up gameplay -X button: Change from unit list to unit-type selection -L button: Rotate the playing area 90 degrees counter-clockwise -R button: Rotate the playing area 90 degrees clockwise -Start Button: Open the options menu -D-pad: Move the play area in the direction indicated (note, this does not follow the direction of the map on the top screen, but the bottom) -Touch screen: Unit selection, commands, the whole kaboodle really -Selecting and moving units To select a unit, you can either tap on that unit, click on the icon to the right of your screen that shows the stylus and draw a circle round the unit or units (this also pauses the game while you do so), or tap the avatar for that unit in your unit list at the bottom of the screen. These icons each represent a unit by their type and health status. Diamond avatars represent Hero units, Circles ones represent Gatherer units, and Squares represent Battle MOB units. Also when your units are carrying out an action (harvesting, attacking) they will turn into stars momentarily. The colour will show you how well your unit's health is doing. The closer it gets to red, the closer it is getting to dying a horrible death. Green and happy means health is between 81-100% Yellowy-green and indifferent means health is between 51-80% Yellow and drooping means health is between 31-50% Orange and rather down in the dumps means health is between 0-30% A health bar is displayed above each unit indicating the aproximate health of the unit, including enemies. To then move the unit or units selected, tap on bottom screen where you want them to move and they will do so, indicating their path with a series of white arrows. Note that in the event of a path being blocked, or being too narrow to get a certain number of the units through, some units may decide to seek out alternative routes, even if it means gonig into enemy territory, so keep an eye on where your units are heading. When moving multiple units, the first unit to the spot will occupy it, while the others will wander around the near area of the spot already occupied. If it frees up, another unit will take its place. You can also select all units of a certain type by changing your unit list to unit type mode. To do this, press the X button, and a set of icons depicting all the units types available to you will be displayed. Tap on on of these, and all units of that type will be selected. Also, when you manually select one or more units by tapping on the unit or encircling it, the type of units selected will flash on this icon list. -Terrain Note that certain units will only be able to move on certain terrain. Most units will move along the ground only, and can only jump up small steps. Jumping units can overcome changes in relief to a certain extent. Flying units can go practically anywhere. Aquatic units will move faster along water (that ground units can't tread) and slower on land. More detail on MOB types and how they handle terrain can be found in the MOB section later in the guide. -The Map The map in the top screen will show you the entire level. The lighter areas indicate the map that you have uncovered so far, and the darker the areas that are still to be unveiled. You will be able to see units and resources in the uncovered areas (even if no unit is currently there of yours). A red square will show you what part of the map corresponds to the play area you are currently viewing in the bottom screen. One corner of this square corresponds to where the compass (top left of your bottom screen) is situated in relation to the square. You will also see here a power guage that indicated how powerful your army is in comparison to the enemy's. Half-way means your even, and the more your green extends into the right side of the bar the more powerful you are in comparison, and vice-versa. -Map switching As well as moving the game area with the D-pad, you can also switch your screens so that the top map is displayed on the touch screen. A square will display the game area. Tap on a part of the map to move this square there, and the game screen will shift accordingly. You can then switch the screens back. This also allows you, if precise enough, to select units on the map, as well as centering the screen on them to use them. To switch the screens, use the icon in the top-right corner of the bottom screen. Note that this icon is also used in the information menus. -Rotating the screen You can rotate the screen in 90 degree increments either using the L and R buttons to rotate counter and clockwise respectively, or you can tap on the compass in the top left corner of the bottom screen to rotate clockwise by 90 degrees. Also note that the blue marker in this compass will indicate North. -Resources There are two resources to collect in the game. Gatherer units will head out to collect these and bring them back to the Nightswan Ship. First off is Gaia Stones. These are collected from mineral deposits with Gaia's face on them, and are used to build structures within your Ship. Then there are Treant Fruit, which is collected from trees with Treant's face. These are used to spawn MOB units from the structures in your ship. Each resource deposit has a limited quantity of mineral or fruit, and the less there is available the more droopy the deposit's face and general status will look (so the tree will wither, and the mineral deposit will look... well, more and more shagged out really). -Hidden treasure In each map there are hidden items that are found when any MOB unveils a certain square on the map. This is another reason to explore as much of the map as possible. A MOB finding an item will be indicated by a extended ascending chirpy melody and a speech bubble with an exclamation mark appearing over their unit-list avatar (if displayed). These items will be listed at the end of the level during the ranking screen. -Anchoring your ship The Nightswan Ship can be moved during a mission, but generally will stay anchored to a mooring point on the map. Some maps have several mooring points. The ship will only be able to carry out certain functions while anchored, such as spawning units, gathering resources from the Gatherers and summonning God- Beasts, but will be vulnerable to melee attacks also. While on the move, it will be vulnerable only to projectiles, but you won't be able to perform any of the previously listed tasks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [MENUS] Menus This section describes the options available in different screens of the game. Mainly to aid players of the Japanese import version. -Title Menu --New Game (start a new game from scratch) --Continue Game (load one of up to 3 previous saved games) --Free Battle (play non-storyline missions on maps unlocked in the main game) --DS to DS (play against a friend who also has the game) --Wifi ---Wifi Settings (takes you to the DS Firmware Wifi Settings options) ---Wifi Ranking (connects you to the Wifi network) ----Notices (shows latest notices posted by Square Enix) ----Maps Available (free battle missions available this week) ----Top Scores (view the best players scores) ----Rewards (items unlocked with your current point total for Wifi) -Buttons on World Map screen (left to right) --Continue to next Chapter/Mission --Character Roster (use to equip main characters with items) ---Character sprite (select character for play when pre-mission) ---Speech Bubble (view character stats and equipment summary) ---Equip (change the character's equipment) ----Side bar: Sort by (New, Numerical, +HP first, +ATK first, +SPD first, +Range first) ----Top bar: Necklace, Gauntlet, Ring, Elemental Spirit --Notebook ---Chapter summaries and rankings for missions ---Character profiles ---Key words, events ---MOB list --Options ---Game Help (tutorials used in game) ---Settings ----Screen scrolling speed ----Sound effects volume ----BGM volume ----Stereo or mono (default is stereo) ---Savegames (view latest chapter info and save current game to slot) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [RANK] Ranking Your ranking is based on several factors, and can be reviewed in the Encyclopedia in-game. Also, the higher rank you achieve in a mission, the better the reward you will receive for completing the chapter. The factors taken into account are: -Clear Time: 20p Max -Friendly Units Spawned: 10p Max -Enemy Units Defeated: 20p Max -Friendly Units Lost: 20p Max -Gaia Stones Harvested: 10p Max -Treant Fruit Harvested: 10p Max -Map Uncovered: 10p Max -Damage to Ship: 20p Max Platinum S Rank: 100-120 points Gold A Rank: 80-99 points Silver B Rank: 70-79 points Bronze C Rank: 60-69 points D Rank: 59-50 points E Rank: 49 points or less Also in the case of maps where certain statistics don't apply the maximum score is given by default (ie. a map where you are given a set number of units, your friendly unit spawning points will be maxed out even though you didn't spawn any units). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [CHAR-MAIN] Main Characters Each playable Hero character has a Battle Skill and a Waiting Skill. The Battle Skill will have an effect on units that are within 5 squares of the Hero, increasing certain stats or abilities. Waiting skills apply modifiers to the proprties of the Nightswan Ship by increasing its speed or reducing construction costs or times, but ONLY when the character is NOT on the battlefield. This section compiles together both playable and non-playable characters, with a brief summary of their background, and in the case of playable characters, their base statistics, skills, and starting equipment if applicable. 01. The main stats increased are Attack Power, Speed, and Attack Range. Some may also boost one stat and create a new handicap, and some items will also give an additional power (like increasing defense to a particular unit type). To equip an item, you must do so between levels by going to the Character Equipment screen on the World Map view (second button on the bottom of the screen). You may only equip on of each type (Neck, Arm, Finger) and no two characters can share an item even if they aren't on the battle field at the same time. An elemental can only be assigned to one main character at a time, and the spell available for that elemental will vary depending on the character chosen. To cast use an elemental spell during a mission, select only the character that you want to cast the spell by tapping on them (not encircling) and press the blue button below their character stats on the right hand side of the bottom screen. This button will not be available while the character is carrying out an action (attacking the enemy physically). Saber type spells will cast upon your own Leader Unit, and will generally cause your attacks to inflict a particular status ailment upon the enemy a certain percentage of the time, or in Luna's case to absorb HP while attacking. They have very little attack or defense power. Have the terrible tendency to go galavanting off into enemy territory trying to find an alternate route to the resources you pointed them to. -Ground Units Basic attack units for melee combat. Weak against Heavy, strong against Missile. -Heavy Units Heavy attack units for melee combat. Weak against Flying units, strong against Ground. -Flying Units Units that melee attack from the air, or at most from a short distance, and are weak to projectiles. Weak against Missile, strong against Heavy. -Missile units Units that can attack from some distance, but are vulnerable to melee. Weak against Ground, strong against Flying. -Special units Units that have a special ability (such as stealth or unit spawning). They are generally not weak to any particular kind of attack. Often the more costly units to spawn. As you can see, there is a closed weakness diamond created by the main battle units which is very handy to keep in mind when you want superiority over a particular group of MOBs. Units that are weak against another kind will only inflict half the damage on that unit type, and receive double from it. So, for example, an Missile Unit will inflict double damage on an Flying unit, while the Flying unit's attacks will be halved against the Missile Unit, but a Heavy Unit unit will inflict double the damage on the Archer when all its attacks in return are halved. Effectively, you make your units 4 times more powerful when you send them against the right type of MOBs. The other modifier for the units is the terrain they can handle. -Terrestrial units can only handle basic terrain, and little in the way of steps. -Saltatory units can handle moderate changes in terrain height. -Aquatic units can travel over water, and do so faster than travelling on land. -Aerial units can travel pretty much anywhere they please. Herein follows a list of the MOB units in the game. At present, some of the names are incomplete, the special abilities of the MOBs are not listed, and a few notes here and there are left from my original draft. These will get ironed out slowly over the course of the next few updates, and even more so once the US release hits. Also, where there are two sets of numbers for a same property for the same unit, the second number is the value for the game in Hard Mode (ie. the HP for 42. I have started off with Chapter 26 because this one is not as straight forward as many other Chapters, and I wrote it up first as I thought people might have a spot of trouble with it. Other chapters will follow this format. [CHAP01] Night Raid We start abroad the Nightswan, an aerial ship of the Peddan Kingdom, on our way from Peddan to carry out a recconnaisance in the Beast Kingdom. Our main characters, Roget, Yurchael, Qucas, Gemière and D'Kelli, exchange thoughts on the mission ahead. However, not all is going smoothly. Ahead of them, ships from the Beast Kingdom begin to open fire, and they are forced to retreat into the Nightswan and dettach from the main blimp. They crash land in the Duskmoon Forest, making for a really bad start to the day really. You are now given the chance to Save your game. After that, we are taken to the world map. Unlocked Players: Roget, Yurchael Unlocked Bios: 01-05 Unlocked keywords: 01-12 Unlocked MOBs: None Unlocked buildings: Gatherer Unit Base, Ground Unit Base (during Walk2) Continue: [CHAP02] Forest of Beasts [WALK02] Mission 02 Location: Duskmoon Forest Number of Main Characters: 2 Starting Mineral: 2 Starting Fruit: 2 Hidden Item Locations: -1. 1sq South of Gaia -2. 1sq South of Treant -3. 1sq West of the tree to the North-East of the Treant, on top of the hill This is the bog-standard learning level, so don't expect any great excitement just yet. We need to collect some materials to get the Nightswan back up and running like it should be, and learn the basics of the game from Yurchael, your captain. After some talking, your top screen will display a very basic map, and you will receive the tutorial for how to select and move your character. Once back to the game area, tap on Roget, and move him toward the east. He'll come across a Gaia rock formation, and the gameplay will pause to give you the next explanation about unveiling terrain and field of vision, commonly known in RTS games as Fog of War. You will then also be given a step by step DIY course on creating your first Unit Base. Follow the directions and tap where the white- gloved hands tell you to see on board the Nightswan, create a Gatherer Unit Base, and click back out of the Nightsawn screen. Yurchael will continue his explanation, and then you will be guided again through a process similar to the one before, but this time you'll be creating a Rabite via your Gatherer Unit Base. You can only create one during this tutorial, but I recommend you go back in and create 5 of these units (or more, they're free after all). While those are spawning, select your first Rabite and send him over to the Gaia by clicking on it. This will make him start collecting Stones from the rock formation and taking them back to the Nightswan. Once the first stone is taken back, Yurchael will continue his explanation, then leave you to your own devices to continue harvesting. I recommend taking one or two rabites and using them to explore the edges of the map, as you'll uncover hidden items this way. There should be a couple North of the Nightswan. Take the rest further forward to reveal a Treant tree, and receive some more advice from Yurchael, then use these rabites to collect Treant Fruit and take it back to the Nightswan. Again, once the first one is back, a tutorial will display explaining the collection of resources. Once this is over, keep harvesting and take Roget toward the North-East corner of the map, where a Beast Soldier will be revealed in the bewilderness with a baffld look on his face, wondering what in the Goddess' name you're up to. Another tutorial displays regarding Unit HP, and what the little icons at the bottom of your screen represent. Remember, the further in the red, the more trouble your unit is in. Also this will explain switching to Unit Type list, so you can select all units of a specific type at once. We are now given some victory and loss conditions. Normally these are given at the beginning of a chapter, and sometimes updated as events progress, for future reference in upcoming chapters. Victory Conditions: -Defeat the Beast Soldier Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Yurchael must not die Mission Start! Yeah boyyyyyyy! Anyway, you want to make sure you bleed the resources dry in the level with your Rabites while sending Roget after the Beast Soldier, so assign them the task of doing so while you take out wolf-face. He can easily take him on and out in a matter of seconds. Once he's down, Yurchael will take you through another DIY session to create the Ground Unit Base, and a Ground Unit, the Myconid/Mushboom. Once this is over, go back in and create a further 9 of them (because you've got the resources to spare), and bring Roget back toward the Nightswan. After a while, more Beast Soldiers will appear on the scene and aren't too pleased at you. You'll get a new set of Mission Objectives. Victory Conditions: -Defeat all enemies Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Yurchael must not die Mission Start! Off we go again. Grab all your Ground Units and swarm them after the Beast Soldiers fast as you can. Take one to the South-East corner of the map while you're at it too, there should be a hidden item there. The Beast Soldiers should go down with no difficulties, and if you're taking two Mushboom per Beast, you shouldn't lose any units either. Once down, another tutorial explaining the flow of resources will display (also noting the important fact that a max of 25 MOBs can be in play at any one time). After this, you should receive... Mission Complete! Now you will see your ranking, and understand why it was so important to bleed resources dry, create as many units as possible, and do it quick. Also remember that the better your ranking, the better the reward you get for the mission. The rejoicing is short lived, as two ships from the Beast Kingdom will descend on the scene, bringing with them a troop of Beast Soldiers and the King of the Beast Kingdom, Gauser. It doesn't seem to be their day either, since while exchanging heated words, another ship appears on the scene, guns ablazing, and then heads for the Beast King's castle. This causes a quick retreat on behalf of the Beast platoon and their King, leaving you to try and figure out what on earth Peddan is really up to. Time to save! Again... [CHAP03] Lowenburg Falls As you approach the Beast Kingdom Castle you spot the Peddan military attacking, which is quite the surprise considering you were only supposed to be on recconnaisance. Either way, you make your way there to join the main unit. You land and walk up to 3 Peddan Soldiers standing guard and try to convince them you're on their side. Unfortunatly they don't believe you're on a Top Secret mission since they haven't heard of anything remotely along those lines (obviously the words Top Secret didn't give them a hint as to WHY they hadn't heard of it), and are goin to carry out their orders to kill anyone who's not part of the Peddan Army... and that includes you! [WALK03] Mission 03 Location: Vicinity of the Beast Kingdom Castle Number of Main Characters: 3 Starting Mineral: 2 Starting Fruit: 2 Victory Conditions: -Get Roget to the entrance to the Beast King's Castle Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Review the skills they have to offer, equip them with items if you haven't already, and hit the button when you're ready to go into battle. Roget is compulsory (as he always is), then I'd suggest Qucas and maybe D'Kelli. You start out with the three Peddan Soldiers right in front of you, and your ship anchored at the Southern edge of the level. First thing's first, take those soldiers down quickly. While your heroes are taking thsee guys out, make some progress by building the Gatherer Unit Base and a few Rabites. Once the soldiers are down, you'll get a tutorial on Group Selecting using the stylus, and also on moving the map and rotating it. Get your Rabites after some Gaia Stones and Treant Fruit, and take two of your main characters over to the East edge of the map and North until they reach the bridge. Another pause for a Tutorial on the Balance of Power between different Unit Types. Take out the Chobin Hood on your side of the bridge, and meanwhile build the Ground Unit Base and 4 Mushbooms ('cause that's all your resources will allow). Take them toward the bridge. By this point, you should have collected all the resources there were to collect. While they're heading in that direction, select the Nightswan by tapping on it, and then tap near the beginning of the bridge. The game will prompt you as to whether you want to unanchor the vessel, so confirm this and it will start making a move. Once your Mushboom are assembled, take them across the bridge and take down with ease the 4 Chobin Hood there. Once that's done, they'll spot a Cobra and another explanation on the Balance of Power will ensue (because this guy's a Ground Unit and is weak to Heavy Units). You'll now have unlocked the ability to build the Heavy Unit Base. Set the Mushbooms after him, and bring the Nightswan across the bridge. At the same time, tell all your Rabites to head for the bridge too, since we'll need them to sap more resources. At the other side of the bridge will be an anchor point, which will spark another Tutorial. Set the Nightswan to anchor and take the Mushbooms forward to get rid of two more Cobra. Set your Rabite on the Treant that is just west of the anchor point, and once the Nightswan is anchored build the Heavy Unit Base. Start creating Heavy Units and sending them west to take on a couple more Cobra as they appear, and also a Catapult unit at the entrance of the castle. Once you'v almost taken down the catapult, bring your main characters forward, and prepare to take your Ground Units to the Northern edge of the level. When the catapult goes down, another tutorial on Unique Units will display, and a few seconds later, more Peddan Soldiers will appear at the northern edge. But we're ready for them, so take them down with ease using your Mushbooms, since they are Missile Units. You may want to reinforce with your Heavy Units once they're free. As they're about to go down, get Roget to the entrance of the Castle, and the Mission will Complete. Gauser lands with his crew and are greeted by a Peddan Soldier hard at his work of directing his men to set the village alight and generally be rather nasty toward the beastmen. Swing to the other side of the village, you anre your crew have now entered the scene, and aren't best pleased with how things are looking either. The Peddan Army start forcing civilians to evacuate their homes and give them a nice wallop as they try to flee. You start with the whole map available for you to view. You're in the south- west corner, the village is to your north, and Gowzer and his troop are over to the east of the village. You also have a little dettachment to your east to deal with, and some resources not too far away. You'll also have 2 Chobbin Hood/Poron with you to help you out somewhat. Mission Start! The dettachment to your east will start heading your way, and general chaos will ensue in the village. Start by taking your Chobin Hood/Poron up to the border of the village and have them sling some shots at the enemy there. Meanwhile, set your heroes after the small dettachment and build Gatherer and Ground Unit Bases. Set about spawning 5 Rabites, and put them to work on the Treant. (One of your units should find an item to the west of your ship when it spawns.) Another tutorial will interrupt the action, explaining what the Healing House is now available to you. It'll gradually heal units that are within 5 squares of the Nightswan. You'll also get another tutorial when you attack the Spectre, explaining again about the Balance of Power. Now, continue with your main characters to the south-east corner to reveal a hidden item, and start spawning Mushbooms as fast as you can make them, and send them after the group of archers that are at the entrance of the village. Also keep an eye on your Rabites, so that when the Treant runs out you send them after the Gaia (not because you need it, but because it will give you an extra 10p toward your ranking at the end). As your mini-swarm of Mushbooms (you should be able to get 5 out, then another five while they attack) take on the archers and wipe them out, move your main characters up behind the Eagle Ship to reveal another item, then prepare to take them to the village entrance. Once your Mushy friends have taken down the archers, the other 5 should be close behind. Tell them all to head for the Archers in the northen part of the village, and stop to take out any that may be left by the Beastmen on the way (most should have fallen by now, which is unfortunate seeing as this counts against you point-wise). Once all the archers are down, all that remains is the leader in the north-west corner. He may take down a unit or two from your room- platoon, but there's no point in wasting time to create the Heavy Units required to take him down any quicker, and you'll only waste more time doing this. He should be the last unit to go down, so once he's finished, Mission Complete. Give yourself a pat on the back for saving the pack. [CHAP05] Reunion You arrive at Laurent and gain an audience with Queen Garura of Laurent. In her court stand also to her right Minerva, and her two head soldiers, Aruma (blue hair) and Joster (red helmet). After giving the queen your message, you wait outside. Aruma appears, and it seems that there is some past between her and Qucas. Joster and Minerva, who strangeley resembles Riesz from Seiken Densetsu 3, show up also. More past is unearthed between them and Qucas. Our maincharacters return to the Nightswan and leave, only to then see Laurent attacked by Ms. Bazzy's forces. The Nightswan flies over the castle and Qucas jumps out to inform Aruma and Joster of the predicament. Aruma is surrounded by two Pedan soldiers, which she takes down with ease, as if to suggest she doesn't need his help, but more and more soldiers keep appearing. Time to fight. [WALK05] Mission 05 Location: Laurent Castle Victory Conditions: -Defeat all enemies Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Aruma must not die -Joster must not die Number of Main Characters: 4 (Roget and Qucas required) Starting Mineral: 1 Starting Fruit: 2 Hidden Item Locations: -1. 1sq South of nearest Gaia -2. 1sq West of the East-most Treant -3. 5-6sq South of the North-West corner of the map, near the precipice Choose two more characters aside from Roget and Qucas (since they are required by default). I went for Gauser and Gemiere, personally. First thing's first, quickly get a Gatherer House up and producing 5 Rabites. While that's going on, send two of your characters to help Joster out outside the castle and one up to the battlements where two Laurent soldiers are about to be attacked. Make sure that Qucas actually helps Aruma out, since he has a habit of standing there doing nothing. Once you given them their orders, you should have a couple of Rabites ready at least, so send these after some Gaia Stones. They should also pick up the first hidden treasure. Build the Missile Unit Base with the stones collected. Send two of your main characters to each of the northern corners to sit out the battle for now, they'll come in useful later. If you get the chance, send one near the Treant on the way East to collect a hidden treasure, and get one of the western ones to explore near the precipice for the same reason. Now move the Nightswan out of the castle to the anchor point to the south of Joster, and send the Rabites out of the castle and to the outside of the western tower. They will find a Treant just west of the hook there, so send them to collect all the fruit there and bring it back to the newly positioned Nightswan. Meanwhile, spawn two Chobins, and then another 2 once you have enough fruit. It's around about this time that another ship will come in to play and head for the Castle. Send 2 chobins due west to stand next to a Gaia there, and keep two near the Treant just south of your mooring point. This should kill off these fou spectres quite easily. If one gets by, it'll be tackled by Joster. Once these are out of the way, send 2 or 3 Rabites after the Gaia Stones to the west, and a couple more to the nearest Treant. Now build the Heavy Unit House and spawn as many Puchiguranshie as you can (11-12 should be enough). Start sending these so that you end up with 2 at the middle of the map at the west and east-most borders, and 3-4 accompanying each of the main character groups we created before at the Northern corners. Meanwhile, manage your Rabites so they make swift pickings of the remaining Gaia and Treant on the level. Once you have your Puchiguranshie in place, send your Chobins to the southern-most point both to explore the rest of the map and take out two remaining Spectres. When these go down, you'll understand the groups we made before with the main characters and the Puchiguranshie. 4 Nevarl soldiers will appear in each Northern corner, and two at each mid section East and West. All hell will break loose! If you've set up your groups as we discussed, you'll hear the sound of ninja death through every corner of the level, and within seconds, Mission Complete! Qucas leaves Joster and Aruma to deal with things outside, while he runs in to find Queen Garura falling to the forces of Nevarl, led by Olbex. As they're about to take Minerva, our heroes arrive. Outside things aren't looking good either. As the forces of Laurent fall slowly, the Dark Mirror appears and engulfs the castle in darkness. Aruma and Joster run to the throne room. In the confusion, Minerva manages to free herself from her Nevarl captors and threatens Olbex. Sadly, it is no good. Laurent is now under the control of Nevarl forces, and our heroes must leave. If there's a bright centre to the planet, you're on the continent it's farthest from. And now in this desolate place, and with little in the way of hesitation, we must set out to find the missing Nevarl troops. [WALK06] Mission 06 Location: Burning Sands of Nevarl Number of Main Characters: 3 Starting Mineral: 1 Starting Fruit: 2 Victory Conditions: -Find the missing Nevarl troops Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. Hidden Item Locations: -1. 1sq North of the nearest Treant -2. 1sq North of East-most Treant -3. Lower plato of the two-tiered hill near the North-East corner For this mission your best bets to take with Roget are Qucas and Gauser. You'll be starting off on the western border of the map. There's a small gang of Nevarl troops just east of your position, guarding the Gaia stones there and a Treant just north of that. First this to do is set a Harvesting Unit House on the way and summon 6 Rabites. Meanwhile, take your main characters east and take out the Nevarl troops, so we can then safely send 3 Rabites to the Gaia, 3 to the Treant. This last batch should uncover a hidden item just north of the Treant. There are no more enemies to worry about just yet, so we can focus on getting our stocks up and ready for later in the level. Once 4 stones have been collected, build the Healing Home, and keep an eye on the Rabites collecting the fruit from Treant. It'll run out after a short while, and once it does you're best to get them ready for the next stage, so bring them just east of the Gaia. When this also has run out, move the Nightswan, the Rabites and your main characters just east of the centre of the level, and you'll discover the missing Nevarl Troop, including Falcon and Sand Arrow. Our Mission conditions have now changed. Victory Conditions: -Defeat all enemies Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. -Falcon must not die. -Sand Arrow must not die. Now, get the Nightswan anchored and send 3 Rabites North-East of the Nevarl troops to collect the Treant fruit there (and also uncover another hidden item), and send another 3 due South to do the same (minus item). You need to do this quick, as the scene will not remain quiet for long. A few small groups of troops will start to emerge from north, but they shouldn't be too hard to take down. Plus you have the Healing Home, so you can take some damage without fear. It's not over yet though. Build a Ground and Heavy Unit Unit Home and crank out 9 puchigurnsie and 8 Mushbooms. Send a group of 3 of each to the South-East corner of the map, a group of two of each to the North border of the map near the western corner, and another group of 2 of each to the South-West corner of the map. Finally, send the remaining Mushboom and 2 Puchiguranshie directly south where the Treant was. As you get your troops in to place, it may be an idea to use one or two of your unoccuppied Rabites to explore some of the untouched areas of the map, EXCEPT the border directly east of the Nightswan, since there are two troops and a vehicle. There's another hidden item in the north-east corner, at the top of the little hill. Now the fun begins. Hopefully you've got all your troops nicely positioned, so when the reinforcements turn up, you're already out-numbering them considerably. Your main problem is going to be the south-east corner, since it's quite a tight spot, and troops can get stuck doing nothing but getting quite the spanking from the enemy troops. At the same time, take your three main characters directly east to make easy work of the vehicle and two troops that have been patiently waiting there for quite some time now. Victory is yours once again. As you all stand in awe, Salamando, the Elemental Spirit of Fire, also makes a spectacular appearance. The explains that this is one of the 8 Mana Stones scattered around the world, and that each contains a powerful Mana Beast. In the case of this stone, that is Xan Bie, who concedes to help Roget on their mission. But it just wouldn't be a party without someone to spoil it, now would it? Flame Kahn, leader of the Nevarl forces, turns up with a whole slew of cronies. Not only that, he's Falcon's father. Maybe she's not supposed to be out this late. He then leaves. Just in time for us to save. (I will flesh this out once I have the English version, promise.) The Nightsawn will now make it's way over to Wendal for a quick stop, then speed on ahead to the Grassy Plains for Valseng (often known as Forcena). Yuhani, a childhood friend of Roget's, waits at the other side of the bridge there, and he doesn't look too friendly either. After some exchanges, he orders troops to go after you. Now most of your enemies here are going to be Heavy Units. Quite luckily, we now have available to us the Flying Unit Base, as well as the Fire God-Beast Altar. [WALK07] Mission 07 Location: Grassy Plains of Valseng Victory Conditions: -Defeat Yuhani Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. Number of Main Characters: 5 (Roget required) Starting Mineral: 1 Starting Fruit: 5 Hidden Item Locations: -1. 1sq West of the western Gaia from the start -2. 1sq West of the North-most Treant -3. 3-4sq West of Item 2 Recommended characters to pick are Qucas, Gauser, Alma and either Yurchael or Belga. From your starting point you will find two Gaia resources, one directly West, one directly East. Each is guarded by 1 and 3 minor units respectively, so while your building your Harvesting Unit Base and about 5 Rabites, take these out with your main characters. The eastern guards will come down the small passageway, so don't take your main characters any further east than that, as they may slip through and attack your ship. Make sure you get the hidden item west of the western Gaia. While your Rabites finish picking off the Gaia stones, take your main characters north of the passage and reveal an anchoring point. Once the Gaia has been collected, we'll move the Nightswan here and send the Rabites after the nearby Treant. Now build the Healing Home and the Flying Unit Base, and start summoning 10 Needlebirds. Get them ready at the bottom of the bridge, but line them up so that once the Rabites have finished with the Treant near the Nightswan you can send them after the newly discovered one. Once you've finished harvesting, arrange your Needlebirds so that they are ready to attack the western 4 squares above the Treant, with Qucas and Alma behind them. Then, take 5 Needlebirds across the bridge with Roget, and the fun will begin. Once they reach just past the centre of the bridge, Pedan troops will appear at the West Treant and at the top of the bridge. Backed-up with your Main Characters, they should make mince of them in no time. While this is going on, take the Nightswan across the precipice directly north of its current position, where you'll find another anchor. Breed a new set of Rabites to harvest the Treant here. There are also two hidden items here, one west of the Treant, another 3 squares west of that. While harvesting, breed 4 or 5 Needlebirds more, and take them to the northern border of the map to take out some units hiding up there. Back at the battle, once the Needlebirds have made quick work of the troops, start taking them across the bridge with your main characters, wiping out units on the way. When it comes to Yuhani, go at him with your Main Characters, as the Needlebirds will have little effect on him. It's important that you try to get as many troops defeated before Yuhani as you can, because once he goes down, that's the end of the mission. Heartless? Me? Anyway, we need to head out and find the missing Valseng troops, so let's set to it. [WALK08] Mission 08 Location: Grassy Plains of Valseng Victory Conditions: -Search for the Valseng troops Loss Conditions: -Roget must not die. Nightswan Ship must not be destroyed. Number of Main Characters: 4 (Roget required) Starting Mineral: 1 Starting Fruit: 5 Hidden Item Locations: -1. 1sq South of the nearest Gaia from the start -2. 1sq North of the nearest Treant, in the water (needs Aquatic unit) -3. Middle of the river, about a 5th down from the North (needs Aquatic unit) For this one I recommend Qucas, Gemiere and Falcon, because we'll need some Missile back-up, as well as fast flying. First thing to do, yes, you guessed it, build the Harvesting Unit Base, and crank out 5 Rabites and one Pukkun Baby. While they're making an appearance, send your main characters over the bridge just east of your current position and take out the three enemy units there. Once that's done, send 2 rabites and the Pakkun after the Treant there, making sure you check the square just north
