Cheat Code Central had a great time at E3 this year and is excited to announce the winners of our E3 2008 Awards. Check out the different categories and see what games and companies were the best of the show!
E3 2008 was marked by a lot of solid line-ups, but not many huge game announcements. In fact, this year's award goes to God of War III, which only had to show a teaser trailer to vault it into the top spot. We've long awaited confirmation of the next game in the God of War series. At the rather yawn-filled Sony press conference we were treated to a few bright spots, and the God of War III announcement was one of them. Kratos' high definition silhouette atop the ruins of Mt. Olympus just screams awesome. Besides, his exclamation that "In the end, there will be only chaos" is a fateful portent of the sheer ass-kickery that shall befall those who stand in our way.
Unfortunately, true surprises were hard to come by this year. E3 2008 pretty much went by the numbers. After all, it seems like Microsoft made the biggest splash. That said, the thought of a portable Resistance and GTA title were indeed out of the purview. Nevertheless, the biggest shocker announcement was undoubtedly that of Square Enix's decision to release Final Fantasy XIII for the Xbox 360. In retrospect, Microsoft had already been making huge inroads into the JRPG market, so it probably shouldn't have been that big of a surprise. But somehow, it still caught us off guard.
There were a lot of really interesting and inventive action titles on display. MadWorld for Wii looks down right hilarious (in a blood-soaked, psychotic kind of way); Mirror's Edge may redefine the use of first-person perspective; The Force Unleashed lets us abuse the power of the Dark Side (enough said); and Tomb Raider Underworld should bring Lara Croft back into the limelight. Even so, Ubisoft's new Prince of Persia title takes the cake. The prospect of getting the prince back in action, coupled with the fresh, cel-shaded look that harkens back to the eager innocence portrayed in the Sands of Time, forced our hand in favor of our old friend.
