July 14, 2008 (Los Angeles Convention Center) - The Microsoft Xbox 360 Keynote presentation of 2008 was marked by impressive, if not "wow" announcements. Games such as Fallout 3, Fable II, and Gears of War 2 appear to be shaping up quite nicely indeed, while a new design for the 360's dashboard is set to make the 360 more accessible. Plus, more casual games and applications such as additional music and rhythm titles, an extensive partnership with Netflix, and more community features should enrich the overall 360 experience. Last, but certainly not least, Final Fantasy XIII is coming!
The following is our play-by-play. Enjoy!
9:47 - Registration goes smoothly, the line to enter the hall is pretty long. People are anxiously awaiting.
10:10 - We're seated now and there is a definite buzz in the air. There are three stages marked by monitors to the left, a large screen center stage, and a comfy couch and chairs to the left. There are a ton of green lights, many beautiful booth girls, and a powerful, multi-speaker surround sound to set the mood.
10:11 - "Street Talk" videos begin. Kids and people around LA are interviewed and it's all pretty funny.
10:17 - People are still trickling in. There are just a few seats left to be had.
10:23 - Initial video loops.
10:27 - Music's picking up now. It's a lot louder and much more exciting; the mood is definitely set.
10:31 - Don Mattrick of Microsoft takes the stage to our left. Xbox 360 is the biggest seller in the U.S. with 10.2 million units sold as compared to Nintendo's 10.1 and Sony 5.0 million. Microsoft will further growth by delivering to loyal fans and attracting new players through visceral and casual experiences alike.
10:34 - Todd Howard from Bethesda Softworks. Fallout 3 trailer features cheesy (but in a good way) Cold War-like images (Duck and Cover). The nuclear wasteland featured is impressive. The setting is a post-apocalyptic Washington D.C. in 2277. Game can be played in either first or third-person. The environments are highly detailed and the mix of real-time and "turn-based" gameplay seems very innovative. Picking out various body parts in a freeze-frame looks awesome. Yankee Doodle's playing in the background. Nice touch! Supposedly there will be 100+ hours of gameplay.
10:41 - Jun Takeuchi of Capcom enters the stage. It's Resident Evil 5 time! The game looks AWESOME! Zombies seem pretty nerfed though. What's that you say Jun? RE5 will be online co-op oriented? Sweet! The tag-team tactics between Chris (Redfield) and his partner Sheva Alomar seem really fun. The game will be available Friday, March 13, 2009.
