Bethesda had an understated booth at this year's E3 2009. That being said, it was about five times larger than what was on display last year. Of course, showing off Fallout 3 at E3 2008 was enough meat for any company. This year we got a guided tour of several new IPs and the latest Fallout 3 DLC, Point Lookout.
The gaming public at large was not hovering around the Bethesda booth because access to its games simply was not given. Even journalists couldn't get their hands on the titles for very long. Nonetheless, we were impressed by our tour of Brink - Splash Damage's new near-futuristic shooter that takes place on an isolated community out at sea. This game features a new movement mechanic called S.M.A.R.T. that keeps players focused on the action regardless of the terrain and obstacles in their way. Also, an emphasis on customization, player roles, and co-op play should make this a multiplayer gamer's dream.
WET also looks like a stellar title. Taking on the role of a sexy, ass-kicking protagonist, players will rolling through levels in a highly cinematic way, much like what was found in John Woo's Stranglehold - only further polished. Slo-mo shootouts and Rage mode provide a level of carnage that should nicely sate the bloodlust of mature gamers. Similarly, Rogue Warrior - a shooter based on "Demo Dick" Marcenik - will use foul language, brutal kills, and a mix of stealth and balls-to-the-wall action segments to keep things fresh.
Finally, I got a chance to sit down with Fallout 3 Point Lookout producer Jeffery Gardiner. This fourth installment of DLC will take players to a new section of the capital wastes: Point Lookout State Park. This once Coney Island-like amusement park is a desolate swamp filled with evil. It is inhabited by mutated Hill Folk and a gang of Raider-like foes known as Tribals. This add-on has an "H.P. Lovecraft meets The Hills Have Eyes" feel, but it is also a return to the gaming experiences players found in the original Fallout 3 content. The DLC is currently set for a June 23rd release.
