The Nominees:
MASS EFFECT (X360)
Developer: Bioware Corp.
Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
Mass Effect is awesome, plain and simple. BioWare Corp has gone out of their way to make an incredibly compelling action RPG. The story is deep and the characters are vibrant. This is a title in which both FPS lovers and RPG geeks can delight. The pacing is lightning fast, the combat faster, and the massive galaxy provides for open ended gameplay and loads of content. The graphics quality, crystal clear sound, and smooth controls are as sweet as they get and should have copies flying off the shelf this holiday season. This is the kind of game that will sell consoles.

BLUE DRAGON (X360)
Developer: Mistwalker
Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
For the traditionalist in all of us, Blue Dragon was the answer to all of the cries of returning to a more classic sense of RPGs. Blue Dragon, with its beautiful graphics, allows you to explore a vast world all the while developing your characters skills and abilities like every other RPG around. Character designs by the creator of the Dragon Ball universe also aid in fans falling in love with the hyperactive and loud lead character Shu. A turned based battle system also reignites the glory of the RPGs of old and adds a few things to the mix without straying too far from a proven formula.

FOLKLORE (PS3)
Developer: Game Republic
Publisher: SCEA (SONY)
Folklore brought the PS3 back to its PlayStation roots. The lengthy, stylized, fantasy adventure bounced gamers between the real world and the Netherworld. The story follows the paths of two adventurers, Keats and Ellen. Both are from very different backgrounds with very different motivations. Each level in the beautiful title had two phases encompassing the two different perspectives of the protagonists. The winding story that was told was enhanced by the wonderful creatures and the fantasy environments the gamer encounters. Folklore is the kind of game that the Sony faithful had been waiting for and what Sony should continue to produce in order to recapture the imaginations of their base.

WILD ARMS 5 (PS2)
Developer: Media Vision
Publisher: SCEA (SONY)
Celebrating a video game's anniversary is never a hard thing to do. Sometimes we will just receive a remake of the original or a compilation of the entire series to that point. With the Wild Arms series though, what else would you expect than a full on next installment into the series? A game that is deeply rooted into Western mythologies of the old west, at least in character appearance. Wild Arms 5 links the previous installments together and delivers on advancing the series into a new direction. With an interesting turn based combat system, there's much to learn and a feeling of uncertainty at every turn. Wild Arms 5 is just wild enough to call it self the 10th anniversary edition of the franchise.

SUPER PAPER MARIO (Wii)
Developer: Intelligent Sys.
Publisher: Nintendo
Super Paper Mario really surpassed our expectations. Although some people might regret that Paper Mario lost several of its RPG elements in this new installment, Super Paper Mario is far superior to its predecessor and really feels like a Mario game that will keep you hooked for hours to come. The smooth integration of the powerful fairies known as Pixls into the story along with the subtle use of the Wii remote was great. The hilarious boss battles also helped to make Super Paper Mario an instant classic. How will we ever forget the goofy Chameleon Francis and the nasty Count Bleck? Once you go flat you'll never go back!
