The eighth installment in Konami's long-standing survival horror series was only recently dubbed Silent Hill: Downpour and will be another drastic change for the franchise. Because of the lukewarm reviews the last four games received (The Room, Origins, Homecoming, and Shattered Memories), Downpour will mark a return to the glorious days of Silent Hill. Developer Vatra Games said they're taking inspiration from the original games in the series, specifically Silent Hill 2.
In it you play as Murphy Pendleton who's recently escaped from prison only to find himself in the middle of the monster-infested town of Silent Hill. This game won't be connected to any other games in the series but it will take place in the southeastern region of Silent Hill, a place we've seen in previous games but never been able to explore. As for the new additions, the most exciting one is the prominent role of water and weather, hence the game's name. Whether or not Downpour is the Silent Hill we've all yearned for is a question that won't be answered until the game's released sometime later this year.
The long in-development collaboration between some of the biggest names in the gaming industry, specifically Shinji Mikami (creator of Resident Evil), Goichi Suda (No More Heroes, Killer7), and Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill composer), was finally revealed at the Tokyo Game Show late last year. While its flavor is decidedly Japanese, Shadows of the Damned is an action/horror title that follows Garcia Hotspur, a man on a mission to save his true love from the clutches of evil. His adventure will take him to Hell and back and will offer plenty of punk rock edge and psychological action that are the trademarks of designers Goichi Suda and Shinji Mikami, respectively.
Shadows of the Damned is slated for release in 2011. Look here to read our full preview.
