PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds appeared on the multiplayer scene this year and rapidly became a massive worldwide phenomenon. It regularly trades with heavy hitters like DOTA 2 and CS:GO at the top of the Steam charts (in fact, at the time of writing, it’s in first with more than double DOTA 2’s player count), and its intense, nail-biting 1 v 99 battle royale gameplay has even helped launch the careers of several streamers. Above all, though, PUBG has shown that not even Early Access has to stop a game from being a damn fine multiplayer experience.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
If PUBG manages to monopolize the online gaming market, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will at least have local multiplayer to fall back on. Years on, Mario Kart is still one of the best ways to have an excuse to scream at your friends, and this instalment is no exception. With tons of tracks and characters, great offline (and online) multiplayer, and the ability to take the game nearly anywhere thanks to the Switch’s portability, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe seems like a game that’ll be the life of the party for a long time to come.
