CheatCC’s 2017 Preview Guide: Best Action Games Coming This Year!

Horizon Zero Dawn

Systems: PS4
Release Date: February 28, 2017
Developer: Guerrilla Games
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

In Horizon Zero Dawn, you play as Aloy, a hunter in a post-apocalyptic land where robots behave strangely like big game. Aloy is the kind of hunter who uses every part of the carcass, so to speak, meaning she collects scraps from her prey or hacks them to ride them like vehicles.

The juxtaposition between the wilderness and sci-fi themes intrigues us, and we can’t wait to see how well it works this February.

Scalebound

Systems: PC, XBOX ONE
Release Date: Canceled
Developer: PlatinumGames
Publisher: Microsoft Studios

Hideki Kamiya’s latest project is different from what you’d expect from Platinum Games because Scalebound is focused more on RPG elements and photo-realistic graphics rather than precisely crafted button combos. This is an attempt to appeal to newcomers, but the premise is cool enough to hopefully appeal to long-time fans.

Drew and Thuban are a human and dragon duo who literally cannot live without the other. Expect lots of aerial combat and bosses of grand scale.

***EDITOR’S NOTE: Scalebound was canceled by Microsoft shortly before publication. Insert sad trombone sound here.

Crackdown 3

Systems: PC, XBOX ONE
Release Date: 2017
Developer: Reagent Games
Publisher: Microsoft Studios

Although the third title in the series, Crackdown 3 is, according to Microsoft Studios creative director Ken Lobb, more of a reboot rather than a full-blown sequel. That might be for the best considering Crackdown 2 was criticized for feeling like more of the same.

So, what can we expect in this rebooted version of Crackdown? Destructible environments, which are supposedly supported by cloud computing, and more futuristic criminals to apprehend.

God of War

Systems: PS4
Release Date: 2017
Developer: Santa Monica Studio
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment

Many of Sony’s properties lately have been about passing on the torch. And even Kratos, whose rage is so great that the Greek gods couldn’t escape his wrath, seems to be settling down. Kratos now has a son and is invested in teaching him everything he knows.

That’s not to say the old man no longer has any fight in him. This time, Kratos is taking on creatures of Norse mythology, and it’s difficult to imagine he’ll leave anything behind for his son to kill.

Yakuza 0

Systems: PS4
Release Date: January 24, 2017
Developer: Sega
Publisher: Sega

By far the most annoying aspect of the Yakuza series is that it takes years for them to come out to the West.

But at least with Yakuza 0, Sega will deliver something else that players have been waiting for: the chance to play as Kazuma Kiryu’s rival, Goro Majima, in 1980s Tokyo and Osaka, Japan.
