Best Game Overall - 2006
|

ruth
be told, it's not easy picking the best game of the year, every year.
It must have been a joke back in 1978 - "Space Invaders wins AGAIN!!"
- but in the 21st century, we have to say it really does get harder to
choose the cream of the crop because so many games are just so dang creamy!
That being said we're nothing if not professional and of course, we have
picked the Best Game Overall in 2006. Without further ado or time-wasting,
here are our 10 nominees for Best Game of 2006:

Will the Best Game of the Year go to Capcom's artistic masterpiece
starring a diety masquerading as a white wolf? |
|
 |
|
Perhaps Epic's cinematic shoot-em-up should get top honors for
its frenetic-action, heart-pumping eye candy and awesome controls.

Insomnac's first attempt at the First Person Shooter genre certainly
turned a lot of heads in the gaming industry. Could it walk away
with Best Game of 2006?

So far Link, Midna, Ganondorf and Princess Zelda are sitting pretty
with two awards - Best Wii game and Best Cube game. Could Zelda have
used her insane magic skills and cast a spell on us, in an attempt
to earn the highest honor or is it possible that it could win on its
own merit without resorting to trickery and the arcane arts? |

We're a sucker for a GTA game, but not because we're dimwitted morons
who don't know any better, but because Rockstar makes great games.
It's no secret we loved Vice City Stories, but did we love it enough?
That's the big Q now, isn't it? |
|
 |
|
It was a great year for RPG fans and Oblivion was definitely one
of the best, if not one of the best RPG's of all time. Can Oblivion
take on Vice City, Gears of War and Zelda (to name a few) and win?

How much did we love Guitar Hero 2? We gave it a 5 out of 5, that's
how much. We're not as generous as we used to be with handing out
top scores - we didn't know any better and any game we reviewed was
better than selling shoes, so we were a little enthusiastic a few
years ago - but that's no longer the case. Maybe this year, we gave
the Best Game Award to a music game. Could happen. |

The newly updated sequel to the game that started it all. To say we
wouldn't be here without the original Super Mario Bros. is an understatement.
This instant DS classic was side-scrolling gameplay personified and
is worthy of a thousand awards, but did it win Game of the Year? |
|

Square Enix knows RPG audiences better than almost every other
company which means KH2 delivered in spades. This latest Goofy,
Sora and Donald adventure came out last March and it's still at
the forefront of our memories. Now, that's a quality title! It is
certainly worthy of Game of the Year, but did we deem it so?

Ah, one of the finest, purest RPG experiences ever created. Jam-packed
with drama, pathos, adventure, love, passion and music, FFXII is truly
an epic. That being said, is it really better than all of these other
games? You'll find out in just a sec... |
