Fez is a game about a 2D character who explores a 3D world with the help of a funny little hat. It's artistic, has a retro aesthetic, features some great gameplay, and is loaded with Easter eggs that only the most sharp-eyed gamers will catch. On top of that, the soundtrack, bouncing between 8-bit melodies and low-fi ambient sounds, just makes you feel good. I dare you to play Fez and not smile, at least on the inside.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (The comic, the movie, or the game)
Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim series of graphic novels tells a fantastic story filled with gaming, music, and painfully stylish chicks. Though poor Scott sees some darker times throughout the course of the series, it's all told with a witty sense of humor and video game references galore. And if you're not the reading type, the film version is great, and the video game version is a faux-retro love letter to gaming itself, topped with a phenomenal chiptune soundtrack by Anamanaguchi. No matter which medium you choose to enjoy it in, Scott Pilgrim's tale was simply made for gamers.
The Ending of Portal 2
Personally, when I feel blue, the first thing I do is head to YouTube to re-watch the ending of Portal 2 for the bazillionth time. First of all, the audio is incredible, from the heart-wrenching turret opera to another Jonathan Coulton credits ditty. On top of that, seeing GLaDOS, a being that's been trying to kill you off for two entire games, have a brief change of heart is one of the most pleasant and welcome plot twists in all of gaming. And if that's not enough to touch a soft spot in your hardened heart, Wheatley's final apology will get you. Seriously, if you can get through this entire ending without shedding a tear of joy, then you obviously have no soul.
What do you think? What would you recommend to your fellow gamers to help them cope with the blues? Let us know in the comments section.
