Developer: Irrational Games
Publisher: 2K Games
Release: August 21, 2007
Number of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending

In Barcelona on September 28, 2006, a man named Ken Levine revealed a portion of a video game that his company, Irrational Games, is working to produce. The game is called Bioshock and Ken is Irrational Games' Creative Director. What he showed off for the eager audience of gaming journalists was eye popping. Bioshock is a next-gen FPS that takes place in a utopian underwater world called Rapture. But, being a First Person Shooter, we know Rapture will be anything but utopian. Characters play as Joe, the hero with six different highly modifiable weapons and ammunition, and about fifty genetic powers granted by the ubiquitous Rapturian substance 'Adam.' It is a mind bending, imaginative game in a surreal world of equal parts Quake and PsyOps. Bioshock also gives the player an increased level of personal choice over traditional first person shooters. One can choose whether or not to fight, who to fight, who to befriend, what missions to undertake, and how to modify one's body. Interested? We sure are. Check for Bioshock on store shelves in August of this year.

Name of the Game: The Darkness
Hotness Factor: 3
System/s: Xbox 360, Playstation 3
Developer: Starbreeze AB
Publisher: 2K Games
Release: June 25, 2007
Number of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending

The Darkness, the latest from game developer Starbreeze AB, is a fantasy FPS set to hit store shelves in late June. Named and based on a comic book of the same name, The Darkness puts characters in control of mafia hit man Jackie who, on the eve of his twenty-first birthday, inherits supernatural powers that give him control over The Darkness, a realm (akin to Hell) of dark, evil creatures whose goal in life is to eradicate Jackie's enemies and fulfill his darkest desires. Players will experience fluid double fisted gunplay unique in the fact that there is no reloading in this game - simply drop a spent weapon and pick up a new one - and the ability to command a race of demon-like creatures that take twisted pleasure in rending the life from Jackie's Mafioso enemies. This game is fast, furious, and bloody. Because of the nature of Jackie's superpowers, most of his battles take place at night and in dark places - the creatures of The Darkness shun the light at all costs. This makes for some spooky environments with very cool lighting effects. For a breath of fresh FPS air, check out The Darkness online now or on store shelves in June.

Name of the Game: Call of Juarez
Hotness Factor: 3
System/s: Xbox 360, PC
Developer: Techland (Poland)
Publisher: Ubisoft
Release: June 5, 2007
Number of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Mature

Originally designed for the PC in Europe, Techland's Call of Juarez has made the leap to the next-gen Xbox 360. Believe me, you'll want to keep your eyes peeled. Set in an Old West type world, players will command two characters, 19 year old Billy Candle, accused of killing his mother and step father, and Reverend Ray McCall, gunslinger turned preacher. This is not an historical tribute, nor is it completely serious as a video game. While graphic and brutal, Call of Juarez is not without humor. For instance, the Reverend has the ability to read from the Bible to strike fear into the hearts of his attackers, leaving them in a catatonic stupor to be executed with ease. I like what I've seen with this game because it provides a great deal of variety - one can play with two characters who each have a unique skill sets - a nice dose of gore, and plenty of Old West FPS action. Fear not, this game is not so cheesy that it loses its realism or appeal. Expect a great time pulling off head shots with a stealthy bow, or dual blazing away with six shooters, and fighting heated battles on horseback. As for graphics, they run at a smooth 60 frames per second with good looking bump mapping, lighting, and physics. This game could be a summer time success that comes out of nowhere, while everyone has their eyes on Halo 3.
