Hot Games of 2007 article

Name of the Game: Burnout Paradise
System/s: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: Criterion
Release: August 11th, 2007
Number of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Hotness Factor: 5

By far, my most anticipated automotive game of 2007 has to be Burnout Paradise. I've been a fan of the Burnout series' dangerous driving mechanics for so long, and it seems that Burnout developers Criterion know exactly what to provide die-hard Burnout fans with to keep them hot with Burnout!

First of all, the Burnout team has completely reworked the formula, and instead of using a menu system to select challenges, Burnout Paradise gives you an entire open world system to explore and complete different missions the way that you want to.

Another really exciting feature in the newest installment of Burnout is the ramped up explosions. Instead of having 12 crashable parts to destroy, cars now have over 80 different parts to blow up, and explosions are accompanied with A.I.-engineered sound that makes each crash look and sound different from other crashes.

Burnout Paradise is also incorporating an all-new merit system which utilizes "driver's licenses" to determine how good you are at driving badly, and whether you qualify for new, tougher challenges.

And of course, no preview would be complete without mentioning the graphical leap Burnout will be making with this title. Although some graphical improvement was made when Burnout jumped to the Xbox 360, this one's really overhauling the game's visualizations. You can bet I'll be smashing and crashing all night with this one when it comes out this August!

Name of the Game: Stuntman: Ignition
System/s: PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Publisher: THQ
Developer: Paradigm Ent.
Release: August 28, 2007
Number of Players: 1-8
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Hotness Factor: 5

Stuntman is a unique franchise. There's no other game out there that can rival its distinctive combination of control, speed, and skill. As an automotive game, it challenges gamers to not only win the race, but to do it with flair and with all the right moves. Stuntman: Ignition builds upon its tried and true formula, and comes back with a next-gen game with some amazing new features!

First of all, there's the expanded career mode. You'll work your way through several different moves, and each one will challenge you even more to exercise meticulous control with precision timing to hit that stunt just right. And with a volatile environment that contains gigantic falling boulders and smoldering lava pits, your very life depends on flawless execution.

One thing that's all-new in this game is the online functionality. You'll be able to use a stunt constructor mode where you can design your own back-breaking stunts, and then challenge rival stuntman in a backlot skill showdown. There will also be an additional online multiplayer mode where you can battle online players on film sets to see who can perform the most stunts with the least mistakes!

Although this game is sure to test the patience of some gamers like its predecessor with its complex and excruciatingly sensitive control scheme, it'll be a real treat for those of us strong enough to tough it out!

Name of the Game: Juiced 2 : Hot Import Nights
System/s: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PC, PSP, Nintendo DS
Publisher: THQ
Developer: Juiced games
Release: September 21, 2007
Number of Players: 1-multi
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Hotness Factor: 3.5

Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights is going to be inescapable. It's one of those THQ titles that they bring to every platform. The only exception seems to be the Wii. I guess someone had to be left out somewhere.

The second installment of the new Juiced series is looking to improve upon the first entry's modest success by adding new tracks, new cars, and more customization options for both online and offline racing.

One (quite dangerous) new feature that Juiced 2 will be offering is online race gambling. Now, of course, it's not for real money, but you'll be able to earn game money if you're able to judge online players accurately. Before the race starts, you'll see their vital statistics, and have to make a decision on which driver you think will have the best chance of winning. And, of course, this means that if you're in the driver's seat people will be betting on you. No pressure.

Another little piece of online support that Juiced 2 is offering is the ability to create racing crews with your online buddies. Your racing crew can then make a name for itself winning tournaments and the like. You can also challenge the people outside your inner circle in "pink slip" races, which (like in MotoGP07) are races where you literally lose your car if you don't win the race. Pretty harsh in my opinion.

Overall, this title looks like it's worth the hype, if only for the online support. Crew races, pink slips, and not to mention gambling are sure to keep you up with this one for many a sleepless night!

Name of the Game: Sega Rally Revo
System/s: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC
Publisher: Sega
Developer: Sega Driving Studio
Release: Fall 2007
Number of Players: 1-2
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Hotness Factor: 2

Perhaps the biggest competition for DiRT's rally racing will be Sega Rally Revo. Of course this title isn't as intriguing as something as vague and ambiguous as DiRT, but at least it's straightforward, and those who find that they like rally-style racing may be more apt to pick this one up because they know what they're getting.

Again, you'll engross yourself in the world of Rally racing, with its high-speed bumper to bumper action. You'll have the choice of eight different environments to race in, each with their own set of tracks. And since the tracks are all deformable, you have a very good amount of freedom each time you race.

Another feature in Sega Rally Revo is the customizable game experience. You can choose pretty much everything, from the handling of your car to the amount of A.I. you want. Everything's up to you, and you can create your own personally perfect rally racing experience.

Although comparisons to DiRT are inevitable, this one's looking to be distinct enough that it'll be a unique entry in the small sub-genre of Rally Racing games.
