Name of the Game: Mass Effect
System/s: Xbox 360
Publisher: Microsoft
Developer: BioWare
Release: May 22, 2007
Number of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Hotness Factor: 5

The name Bioware makes gamers sit up and take notice. With the stellar Knights of the Old Republic under their belt, almost any RPG Bioware touches is gold. It's understandable that gamers everywhere are salivating for the chance to play their first next-gen title, the curiously titled Mass Effect.

Mass Effect follows in the sci-fi traditional of predecessor KotOR, but with an entirely new universe. You're placed in the shoes of Commander Shepard. Like most Bioware RPGs, your take on Shepard is customizable, allowing you to designate a class and sex and a distinctive look for your character. Shepard is a soldier who is charged with preventing the spread of a dangerous force across the galaxy. In true Bioware fashion, you get to decide the morality of Commander Shepard.

Mass Effect is impressive in a number of respects. Visually the game is gorgeous, without a doubt one of the prettiest games that we'll see this year. On top of that, there is a dynamic dialogue system that draws the player into the fully voice acted conversations, allowing you to interrupt other characters and choose what to say at the press of a button, unlike other systems that get bogged down in text. There is also a unique combat system that mixes real time combat with the ability to issue commands to troops. All this coupled with a massive game world composed of numerous different planets to visit and explore makes Mass Effect one of the RPGs to watch for this year.

Name of the Game: Blue Dragon
Systems: Xbox 360
Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
Developer: Mistwalker
Release: August 2007
Number of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Hotness Factor: 5

RPGs are changing and if the developer Mistwalker has anything do with it, we will come to know their name as well as the current genre giant, Square Enix. This should come as no surprise, considering that many of the team involved with Mistwalker comprise of former Square Enix employees.

Their first offering, Blue Dragon, is set to bring new light to the ever expanding genre of RPGs. Legends in gaming abound, Blue Dragon has one of the most impressive creative driving forces ever. Hironobu Sakaguchi, the father of Final Fantasy, Akira Toriyama, a name every Dragon Ball fan should know, and, to top it all off, Nobuo Uematsu, the man behind the emotional music of classic video games, most notably Final Fantasy. With powerhouses like these behind the already impressive title, anticipation levels have broken the scale.

Although Blue Dragon is not the first Xbox RPG, you would not be able to tell with several fans. The cute anime feel to the game is only one of the multi-gamer points that look to make the game popular. There are other factors centered on Blue Dragon that will undoubtedly create a frenzy. For starters, supposedly, Blue Dragon will be a three-disc game, something that is nearly an extinct aspect to games. There will also be a Manga book and an Anime show based on the characters. With so much focus on the title, it is no wonder that it has become the number one title for the 360 in Japan. Soon, we will finally get our turn.

Name of the Game: Lost Odyssey
Systems: Xbox 360
Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
Developer: Mistwalker
Release: Holiday 2007
Number of Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Hotness Factor: 5

The second title to drive home the name Mistwalker is Lost Odyssey, and it is going to be a heck of game. Some die hard fans of Sony may have to switch sides for one developer if Mistwalker keeps generating hype around their titles like this.

In Lost Odyssey, the story involves a character name Kaim, a man who has been sentenced to live for 1,000 years. Through those generational woes of love, loss, and conflicts in a world nearing a mystical industrial revolution is where our bond begins with a man that must live for 1,000 years. The award winning Japanese novelist, Kiyoshi Shigematsu, is in charge of penning this dynamic story line. He is also working very closely with the game's producers to handle the story sequences correctly. Nobuo Uematsu will be adding to the emotional story through his classic sounds as the game's composer.

Lost Odyssey looks beautiful. The trailer demonstrates that to the fullest extent without truly giving anything away. Kaim looks like the traditional RPG hero and acts like one as well. Demonstrating some of the slickest moves akin to a samurai warrior, Kaim is quickly generating excitement around Lost Odyssey. If you are an action RPG fan, this is the one to be looking forward to.
