Nights: Journey into Dreams
Developers: Sega Studio USA
Release Date: October 2007
Nights was discussed, but we weren't shown much footage of the game. Mainly the developers discussed the imagery and symbolism behind the gameplay. We were told that the boss battles were very "non-traditional", and as an example, we were told about a rubbery boss that you must exploit his bouncing/stretching tendencies to defeat. Bosses aren't overcome in the regular "hit weak points method", but are defeated by interacting with them to some degree.
Impressions - There wasn't much shown of Nights at all. The discussion about the game did seem intriguing, but there wasn't anything to get excited about.
The Golden Compass
System: PlayStation 3; Xbox 360; Wii; PlayStation 2; PlayStation Portable; Nintendo DS; PC
Developers: Shiny Entertainment
Release Date: Fall 2007
The Golden Compass game is based on the best selling series of fantasy books from author Philip Pullman as well as the upcoming movie from New Line Cinema. This game promises to be authentic to the movie as well as expanding upon the experience created by the movie. The player will alternate between playing as Lyra, the child heroine, Iorek, her powerful polar bear, and Pan, Lyra's shape shifting spirit daemon. Each playable character results in a different gameplay experience.
Impressions - The Golden Compass didn't show anything very revoluntionary or interesting. It might be fun for fans of the book or movie, but seemed to contain typical platforming elements.
Sonic Rush Adventure
Release Date: October 2007
Sonic Rush Adventure is the latest Sonic game to hit the DS. In Sonic Rush, you can use Sonic's trademark speed and utilize both screens with stages that bounce the hedgehog up and down, and 3-D effects also throw the little blue hero towards the screen at times. Sonic must discover islands to explore, and plot courses to them using the DS stylus. You can also use the stylus to perform tricks on your jetski or battle foes during ship-to-ship battles.
Impressions - The way the game allowed Sonic to bounce between screens made for a big platforming experience. The use of 3-D was nice too.
Universe At War: Earth Assault
Systems: PC; Xbox 360
Release Date: 2008
Universe At War: Earth Assault is an RTS game coming out for the PC. You can play as one of three different races (all non-human) in a war for control of Earth. The gameplay in this seemed surprisingly deep, even for an RTS. Each race has distinctly different abilities, not just renamed abilities, and distinct traits. There are interesting abilities for your armies, such as giant Walkers that can be three legged moving bases, scouts that can camoflauge themselves as trees or bushes to opposing players, and defilers that can toxify an area, making its resources useless. Each race has four tiers of research available in different areas, such as assault and eugenics, which gives them new abilities at each level.
Impressions - This was a genuinely interesting looking RTS. The visuals were pretty good, and the different abilities made the game look fun and much deeper than the average RTS.
All in all, Sega had a decent line-up of upcoming games to keep gamers satisfied.
