Top 10 Games That Should Be Scary But Aren't

Whether it's because of our growing desensitization or a failure on the designer's part, some games just don't fully reach their horrifying potential. Join us as we count down the ten scariest games that really aren't as freaky as they should've been.

The Alone in the Dark remake burned me bad. Every single screenshot and gameplay video I saw made the game look like everything I ever wanted from a horror game. It looked beautiful. It had a haunting soundtrack, a big open world to explore, and an incredible story, but everything else was poorly executed and ended up completely ruining the game. Instead of breathing new life into one of the forefathers of the survival horror genre, Alone in the Dark collapsed under the weight of its lofty aspirations.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Doom 3. The sound design was great, and it was one of the best looking games of its time. Most of my disappointment came from the extraordinary level of hype the game received prior to its release. The fact that it was a product of the legendary id Software brought with it high enough expectations. But when you add the fact that it was a sequel for one of the most iconic games of all time, it became almost impossible to meet the astronomically high expectations many gamers had for it. It didn't help that many of the scares were artificial, as the game was brimming with monster closets and forced you to go into areas without a light, or armed with the only gun that had a light attachment—your incredibly weak pistol.

Unfortunately, Amy's defining characteristic ended up being frustration more than anything else.
