Nate realizes that this Lazarevic character has a lead on Marco Polo's lost fleet, and that he had been on the trail of Shambhala (Shangri-La). In this lost city lies the Cintamani Stone, a supposed sapphire gem that is as big around as a man's arm and is worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
The original plan is that Nate, Chloe, and Flynn will steal the artifact, find whatever clue it holds, and double-cross this Lazarevic guy. However, it's not long before Chloe works her seductive magic on Nate and convinces him to double-cross Flynn as well.
The heist goes well until Nate realizes that Flynn has been working with Lazarevic and has been planning on double-crossing Nate the whole time. Flynn leaves Nate stranded in the museum for the authorities to nab, and Nate ends up in a Turkish prison, where his only entertainment is his own shadow puppets. No, seriously.
Months later, Sully finally tracks him down—with help from the elusive Chloe—and basically dumps Nate's entire life savings on getting him out of there. Nate sets out to find Shambhala and the Cintimani Stone, this time motivated equally by his love of treasure hunting and his desire to get vengeance on Flynn and Lazarevic.
The trail leads to a city in Nepal, which is being ravaged by Lazarevic's mercenaries. Right in the middle of all this destruction is the temple which Nate and Chloe must investigate. Who else just happens to be in Nepal? Elena Fisher, of course. She's doing some sort of exposé on Lazarevic's war crimes.
There is some undeniable awkwardness as Nate's current love interest meets "last year's model," which is made even worse by the fact that Elena has a cameraman named Jeff along. Nate is a bit jealous of this Jeff fellow, and Chloe is not comfortable having Elena along, but they all end up working together anyway.
During another scuffle with Lazarevic's mercenaries, Jeff gets killed and Nate seriously injured in a train wreck. He awakens in a peaceful mountaintop Tibetan village. The village leader, Tenzin, puts Nate back on the trail to Shambhala, which, of course, leads to some more Nazi remains and another monastery.
Oh yes, and Yeti.
Inside the monastery is a secret tunnel to Shambhala and the Cintimani Stone. However, this "Stone" is actually a gigantic chunk of petrified blue amber residing in the center of a "Tree of Life." Drinking the sap of this tree gives a person super strength, and Nate must fight a near-invincible Lazarevic.
Nate defeats Lazarevic and Shambhala collapses. Nate and his two ladies resolve to keep this place a secret. If people learned of this strength-enhancing sap, after all, the results would most likely be a terrible war between superhuman troops.
The very ending of the game has Nate admitting he's in love with Elena, and Chloe walking away. But this isn't the last we've seen of her. It's been confirmed that both Elena and Chloe will be returning for Uncharted 3. We can only hope this charming awkwardness returns as well.
Also, Uncharted 3 brings the story back to Sir Francis Drake, and looks to reveal a darker side of Nate. Oh yes. And Nate rides a horse. Awesome.
