Why You Should: Be Excited for the Fall 2011 Gaming Season

Every year, the release of Madden signals the beginning of the fall gaming season, and both gamers and industry types get excited to play the blockbusters that we've been looking forward to all year. And since Madden came out yesterday, it's that time again! So what is there to be excited about this year? Plenty! No matter what kind of gamer you are, there is something coming out this fall for you. Here are five reasons why you should be excited for this fall's gaming season.

5. Shooter Showdown

One of the biggest rivalries in gaming is coming to a head this fall in spectacular form. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 are releasing in the coming months, and both are aggressively vying for your money and online time. The fact that these two heavyweights are coming within weeks of each other is definitely cause for excitement, and no matter which side of the fence you are on, you have to admit that this rivalry is good for gamers. Both the Battlefield and Modern Warfare series are in top form this year, and that is a great thing for shooter enthusiasts. Who will come out on top? We'll have to see, but this kind of rivalry is what the fall gaming season is all about.

4. Nintendo's Big Push

If you are a Nintendo fan, this fall is going to be a big deal. Not only are we getting The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, but we're also getting a new Kirby game for the Wii and tons of 3DS games including Mario Kart, Super Mario 3D Land, StarFox 64, Pokémon: Rumble Blast, and Kid Icarus: Uprising. And with the 3DS' new price point, you can bet there will be some sweet bundles to go along with all those new games if you haven't picked up Nintendo's new handheld already. Pretty much every Nintendo franchise is getting some kind of release this fall, which is extremely rare. In fact, I don't think this has ever happened before. Is this indicative of a company that desperately needs to raise revenue? Perhaps. But in any case, it's a real win for fans of all things Nintendo.

3. New IPs Get Attention

Though the fall is generally fraught with games from well-established series, sometimes there's a new franchise that debuts during this season that catches fire. Games like LittleBigPlanet and Mass Effect have released in the fall and gone on to become huge series, so it's not exactly surprising that we've got some new IPs coming this fall that are poised to make waves. Chief among them is RAGE, id Software's long-in-development post-apocalyptic shooter. This one definitely has some blockbuster potential, but there are also some other new IPs with some serious buzz, including Dead Island and PAYDAY: The Heist. Though it can be tempting to get caught up in the hype surrounding your favorite sequels, there are plenty of new games coming this fall vying for your attention.
