I sympathize with the developers who have to make a game from a movie; it has got to be a tough job. How can you make a game that is truly representative of its big-screen counterpart? Easy. You pick one action in the movie (no matter how important or ridiculous) and you stick with it for the entire game. Did Flik have to throw seeds around for an hour and a half in the movie? No way, but he does now thanks to the magic of video games.
First off let me say that this game is not intended for 32-year-old game reviewers. That's probably obvious right from the start. So, after playing the game and knowing what I would spew about it, I figured I would let the "target audience" speak their minds. From this point forward, this review is in their words, the spelling however is courtesy of me. Aside from a few comments here and there, I'll meet you at the end of the review... Oh and these aren't my kids.
Jocelyn (Age 6: Played the game for 30 minutes): I liked being Flik but I wanted to be the Princess. It was hard to move him. The grasshopper was scary. I liked it.
Daniel (Age 8: Played the game for en evening): I loved this game because it was exactly like the movie. My mom thought I was playing a cartoon. My dad said it was hard to play but I didn't think so. I didn't like jumping so much cuz I wasn't good at it. I would like to play it again.
Darcy (Age 6: Played the game for 15-30 minutes): It was hard. My mom and I didn't know what to do. I liked the ant. He was nice. Throwing the seeds was hard. "Too hard for 6 year olds," said Darcy's mother.
Kaitlyn (Age 10: Played the game for 20-30 minutes): It was fun. Flik was easy to move and it was fun throwing the seeds and jumping on the mushrooms. I would buy this game, but my brother won't let me use his Nintendo. "Oh really?" said Kaitlyn's mother, "That game is for you and your brother. It's not his." ("Someone's in big trouble," said John Doe.)
Michael (Age 13: Played the game for 10 minutes): Sucked. Hated it. Can I try Turok 2 now?
Devlin (Age 9: Played the game for a night with his dad and older brother): My dad was terrible. My brother and I have the movie so we knew what to do. The third level was hard, but my brother finally beat it, but just when we got to the fourth level, my mom said we had to go to bed and we didn't save it. I liked it a lot and my brother thought it was fun (he's 12) but not as good as Banjo.
Kaitlyn D. (Age 11: Owns the game): I like the graphics and the music and it is fun to play. I would tell all kids to buy it who loved the cartoon. It's like playing the movie. I got it (the game) for my birthday and I didn't even ask for it. My friend Jessica, thinks the game is too hard, but she doesn't usually play Nintendo. Her brother has a PlayStation. She doesn't play that either.
Justin (Age 15: Played the game for 20 minutes): Come on, let me play Beetle Adventure Racing. This game is boring. It's for babies or something. Can I try your Dreamcast?
John Doe (Age 32: Played the game for a few days straight): I personally found this game boring and unbalanced. Carrying seeds around for the whole game almost made me lose it. The camera angles are bad and the graphics are "Grade A" yucky. Too much brown for my liking. I thought that this game would be too difficult for the target audience but I guess I'm wrong. The kids have spoken. They liked it, so who am I to say differently?
There you have it. Out of the mouths of babes comes the truth. What a novel idea if I don't say so myself. I think I'll do this again. I mean let's face it, the game is for them right? They give it a thumbs up. Me? I'd say that anyone over 12 should steer clear.
