The World Is Not Enough Review

By: Brother Doe

Well, I gotta hand it to Eurocom. They did a pretty respectable job of making Bond, well, a lot like Bond. And if you couldn't guess, I'm comparing TWINE to GoldenEye. Although there are certain aspects of this game that don't quite have the spit and polish of GoldenEye, you're still going to play it and love it.

Highs:
Lows:

The visuals of TWINE are fantastic. The environments capture the feel of the Bond world perfectly, and you can interact with most of the environments as well. The characters and enemies all look great too, with a hell of a lot of realism and detail. And explosions, gunshots, smoke, and other effects of weapons are some of the best I've ever seen in any game! The animation is super-smooth, and even beats out Perfect Dark and GoldenEye in this respect (though it isn't really fair to compare the graphics to GoldenEye, since it was made back in '97.) The cut scenes are also excellent, capturing the feel of the movie admirably. The only gripe I have at all with the graphics of TWINE is that they can get a tad grainy in some spots, but with all the rest of the visuals being near perfect, you'll barely notice.

The music in the game is also great, despite the fact that it inexplicably doesn't use the classic Bond theme. The music compliments the action on screen perfectly, and the sound effects of gunshots and explosions are impeccable, sounding incredibly realistic and powerful. And the voices add another great element to the sounds, which include the talents of famed Monty Python Alum, John Cleese, and many others. While voices in games based on movies usually come up short, this game is a very welcome exception, and fills out the sonic package of this game fabulously.

The gameplay of TWINE is not unlike GoldenEye. But if you think it's just a clone of Rare's game, think again. Though it has its similarities, because it's based on a different bond movie, there are big differences too. There are areas of the game where you actually swim through environments, which adds a whole new element of the game, as opposed to just being on foot for the entire game. The game's 14 levels each have unique elements to them, and offer a lot of variety and fun. But unfortunately, the game's enemies just don't offer much challenge. Sometimes the bulk of them just stand their ground and just allow you to shoot the hell of them while they offer virtually no resistance. But sometimes they act very intelligently, and survey the area thoroughly when they hear your footsteps (ala Metal Gear Solid). But overall, the single player mode is a lot of fun.

Unfortunately, the multiplayer mode of TWINE just isn't as fun. Though its fast paced, action packed, and by no means bad, it just doesn't reach the high level of fun in single player. The computer-controlled characters in the multiplayer mode are borderline retarded, and don't replicate real players at all. And sometimes the action gets incredibly repetitive. But then, again, many times the sheer action of the multiplayer mode is enough to make it somewhat entertaining. But it could have been so much better.

Overall, TWINE is a solid, action-packed shooter, taking many of the great elements of Goldeneye and making them it's own. The multiplayer, though not as good, is still entertaining, and overall, if you're a fan of Perfect Dark, GoldenEye, or first person shooters in general, you'll love this game! Check it out!
