I'm just letting you guys know that I won't be around for a while, so this guide will be left as is for a little bit, and no e-mails will be responded to right away. I'll start updating normally come mid-November. Oct. 23rd, 2004 (1.5) - Did the following: - Started adding "Uniforms" and "Carpool Vehicles" to careers; so far, only "Athletic" is finished - Added new "Memories" - Added new "Chance Cards" - Added new "Wants" Oct. 20th, 2004 (1.4) - I haven't updated recently, partly because I've been doing other things and partly because I just didn't feel like it. For the next little bit, I'll be sending updates every three or four days, so if you send me something and don't a response right away, you will eventually. Did the following: - Added new "Wandering Sims/Townies" - Added new "Memories" - Added new "Wants" - Added new "Chance Cards" Oct. 13th, 2004 (1.3) - Did the following: - Finished section "[5] Death & Disaster" - Finished section "[8] NPCs" - Reorganized "Wandering Sims/Townies" into groups starting with the letter of their first name - Added new "Wandering Sims/Townies" - Added new info about Lazy Sims - Added new "Chance Card" - Added new "Memories" - Added new "Wants" and "Fears" - Added new "Bug" Oct. 11th, 2004 (1.2) - Did the following: - Added new "Chance Cards" - Added new "Memories" - Added new "Wants" - Renamed "Wandering Sims" to "Wandering Sims/Townies" Oct. 8th, 2004 (1.1) - Did the following: - Added new information to Sims personalities regarding what Neat/Sloppy, Outgoing/Shy, Active/Lazy, Nice/Grouchy and Playful/Serious Sims do. - Added more information to "Interests" - Added more information to "Aspirations" - Added more information to "Aspiration Reward Objects" - Added more information to "Skills", as well as a way to keep your mood up for work while meditating - Added new "Wandering Sims" - Added new "Memories" - Reorganized "Memories" - Added more "Wants" and "Fears" - Added two new "Cheat Codes" Oct. 6th, 2004 (1.0) - Did the following: - Added more "Bugs" - Corrected a grammatical error under "Wants" and "Fears" (thanks to Corey for the heads up) - Added new "Chance Cards" - Added new "Wandering Sims" I'll have a real update coming soon, hopefully. Oct. 4th, 2004 (0.9) - For the next few days, there will be several mini-updates instead of large ones. Today: - Added new "Chance Cards" - Added new "Bug" - Added new "Question & Answer" One major thing I did this update was consolidating the "Wants" and "Fears" into sub-categories. Not only does this make that section more readable, it allows you to jump to any category you want (like wants that are related to jobs or money), and it also lets me delete any wants and fears I had listed more than once. Oct. 2nd, 2004 (0.8) - Not much time today, so I only did a little: - Added new "Memory" - Added more "Wants" and "Fears" - Added more "Wandering Sims" - Added more "Chance Cards" - Added new "Bug" Sep. 30th, 2004 (0.7) - Did the following: - Finished "Types of Foods" in section "[3] Your Sims" - Finished "Aging" in section "[3] Your Sims" - Finished "Love" in section "[3] Your Sims" - Finished "Comfort Objects" under "Object Listing" - Added new section "Interests" to section "[3] Your Sims" - Added new information to "Motives" in section "[3] Your Sims" - Added more "Social Interactions" - Added more "Object Interactions" - Added more "Wants" and "Fears" - Added more "Bugs" - Added more "Questions & Answers" Sep. 29th, 2004 (0.6) - Did the following: - Added new section; "Your Stuff - Lots, Videos, Stories & Sims" - Added "Types of Food" to section "[3] Your Sims" - Added "Memories" to section "[3] Your Sims" - Added a "Bug" - Added more "Chance Cards" - Added more "Social Interactions" - Added more "Object Interactions" - Added more objects under "Object Listing" - Added more "Wants" and "Fears" - Added some "Wandering Sims" - Added new information to "Skills" in section "[3] Your Sims" - Fixed error with Friend requirements for the Business Career Sep. 28th, 2004 (0.5) - Did the following: - Started work on section "[3] Your Sims" - Added basement tutorial under section 10.2 - Added a bug - Added "Aspiration Meter Levels" to section [4] - Added "Desperation Actions" to section [4] - Added new section "Skills" under section [4] - New "Chance Cards" - More "Wants" and "Fears" Sep. 26th, 2004 (0.4) - All careers, both adult and teen/elder, are now finished. I added a "Quick Summary" section to careers, which lists JUST the top job, top salary, and highest amount of friends required; this way, if you don't care about the details (like carpool time or work week), you can just get the info you need. The other sections will now be worked on. Sep, 24th, 2004 (0.3) - Did the following: - A lot more work on careers (the following careers are completely finished: Politics (adult), Medicine (adult), Criminal (adult), Culinary (adult), Science (adult), Science (teen/elder), Politics (teen/elder), Athletics (teen/elder)) - Added "Career Reward Objects" - Started "Object Interactions" and "Social Interactions" - More "Wants" and "Fears" - Added "Cheat Codes" - Started on "Questions & Answers" - Added "Aspiration Objects" - Added Zodiac Compatibility to "Getting Started" Sep. 23rd, 2004 (0.2) - Did quite a lot of work on the FAQ, including: - Started on jobs; some descriptions, work week, salary, hours done - Worked on a lot of "Wants" and "Fears" - Started work on the "Object Listing" - Added a lot of new sections - Rearranged the ToC Sep. 22nd, 2004 (0.1) - Finished all of section one and two, which I admit isn't a whole lot. I'll be working on this FAQ and I'll submit an update every two days or so. Not all sections are complete, and don't worry if the ToC isn't accurate; I'm still working on things. Sep. 20th, 2004 (0.1) - Just started. Only did a little bit of work, and I haven't yet submitted it. =============================================================================== Table of Contents [1] Getting Started [1.1] Choosing Your Neighborhood [1.2] Creating Your Family [1.2.1] Standard Options [1.2.2] Body Options [1.3] Your Sims Aspiration, Personality and Characteristics [1.4] Making a Baby/Genetics [1.5] Setting Up Your Family Tree [2] Setting Up Your Neighborhood [3] Your Sims [3.1] Motives [3.1.1] Hunger [3.1.2] Comfort [3.1.3] Bladder [3.1.4] Energy [3.1.5] Fun [3.1.6] Social [3.1.7] Hygiene [3.1.8] Environment [3.2] Love [3.3] Aging [3.4] Skills [3.4.1] Cooking [3.4.2] Mechanical [3.4.3] Charisma [3.4.4] Body [3.4.5] Logic [3.4.6] Creativity [3.4.7] Cleaning [3.5] Memories [3.6] Types of Food [3.7] Interests [4] Aspirations & Fears [4.1] General Wants [4.1.1] Food Wants [4.1.2] Job Wants [4.1.3] Relationship/Friend/Family Wants [4.1.4] Buying/Objects/Money Wants [4.1.5] Skills Wants [4.1.6] Miscellaneous Wants [4.2] General Fears [4.1.1] Job Fears [4.1.2] Relationship/Friend/Family Fears [4.1.3] Buying/Objects/Money Fears [4.1.4] Skills Fears [4.1.5] Miscellaneous Fears [4.3] Fortune [4.4] Knowledge [4.5] Family [4.6] Romance [4.7] Popularity [4.8] Aspiration Reward Objects [5] Death & Disaster [5.1] Pleading with the Grim Reaper [5.2] Ghost Colors [5.3] Ghost Actions [6] Jobs - Adults [6.1] Politics [6.2] Medicine [6.3] Business [6.4] Athletic [6.5] Criminal [6.6] Military [6.7] Slacker [6.8] Law Enforcement [6.9] Culinary [6.10] Science [6.11] Quick Summary [6.12] Chance Cards [6.13] Job Object Rewards [7] Jobs - Teenagers & Elders [7.1] Politics [7.2] Medicine [7.3] Business [7.4] Athletic [7.5] Criminal [7.6] Military [7.7] Slacker [7.8] Law Enforcement [7.9] Culinary [7.10] Science [7.11] Quick Summary [7.12] Chance Cards [8] NPCs [9] Wandering Sims/Townies [10] Building a House [10.1] Decks & Foundations [10.2] Basements [11] Object Interactions [12] Social Interactions [13] Your Stuff - Lots, Videos, Stories & Sims [13.1] Lots [13.2] Videos [13.3] Stories [13.4] Sims [14] Object Listing [14.1] Comfort [14.1] Dining Chairs [14.2] Living Chairs [14.3] Recliners [14.4] Sofas & Loveseats [14.5] Beds [14.6] Miscellaneous [14.2] Surfaces [15] Questions & Answers [16] Cheat Codes [17] Bugs [A] Contact Information [B] Webmaster Information [C] Where This FAQ May be Found [D] Other FAQs Written [E] The Sims 2 Copyright Information =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [1] Getting Started | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| This section will get you acquainted with the basics of The Sims 2. You'll get all you need to know about creating a Sim family from scratch. There are thousands of combinations, if you only take the time to adjust and fine tune everything, from eyebrow style to shape, from hair to eyes, and more. You'll also find out about neighborhoods, and what makes a Sim a Sim. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [1.1] Choosing Your Neighborhood | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| There are three pre-built neighborhoods that you can choose to move to right away. They are Pleasantview, Strangetown and Veronaville, and each area has it's own special story. All neighborhood descriptions are taken from in-game. Pleasantview "A lot has happened in 25 years! Mortimer Goth made his fortune, the Pleasants put down roots, and a new generation of Sims was born. But the peaceful, happy existence is in jeopardy when some new arrivals to Pleasantview start stirring up trouble, creating rivalries and tensions for all the families in the neighborhood. Can anything be done to restore the peace to sleepy, idyllic Pleasantview? Cassandra is ready to start a family of her own, but can she tame the town Cassanova? And can Mortimer bounce back after the disappearance of his wife Bella? Was it just coincidence that the Caliente sisters arrived on the even of Bella's disappearance? And is there interest in Mortimer physical... or fiscal? Who is Don Lothario? Is his engagement to Cassandra Goth genuine? And what about the rumor that her mother, Bella, was last seen scaling the deck of his condo? Brandi was left to raise two boys alone following her husband's suspicious pool ladder accident. With Dustin acting out, can Brandi teach young Beau to make the right choices in life? On the surface, Daniel and Mary-Sue Pleasant seem to have the perfect life, but is their love a flimsy facade? And can Angela and Lilith make the right choices when it comes to love? Darren is pursuing his dream of being an artist, while his song Dirk hits the books. And Darren may have found his muse, but will his creativity be enough to win Cassandra's affection?" There are six families currently living in Pleasantview. They are: Pleasant Goth Dreamer Caliente Lothario Broke There are two families in the family bin waiting to move to the neighborhood, and they are: Burb Oldie --==--==-- Strangetown "An aspiration for knowledge has attracted a diversity of truth-seekers to this small communuity along the Road to Nowhere. Can they learn to accept their neighbors, or will their differences clash and spell ruin for their town? And are the reports of a Bella Goth sighting fact or fiction? In Strangetown, nothing is what it seems. In search of truth and mystery, the three Curious brothers, Pascal, Vidcund and Lazio, got more than they were "expecting." Can they cope with their new roles as cosmic parents? After a fruitful career, Pollination Technician 9 has retired to his favorite planet. But can his son Johnny make friends and fit in, or is this family just too strange for Strangetown? What experiements are the highly secretive and less than neighborly Loki and Circe Beaker performing on poor Nervous Subject? Will this secrecy affect Circe's career ambitions? Tank has always lived under the hard thumb of his father, General Buzz Grunt. In this domesticated boot camp, can Tank prove his worth to this demanding Dad? Who is buried in Olive Specter's garden? Will the mysterious, aging outcast leave her fortune to her niece Ophelia, or, as rumored, to an unnamed heir? There are five families currently living in Strangetown. They are: Specter Curious Smith Grunt Beaker There are two families in the family bin waiting to move to the neighborhood, and they are: Loner Singles --==--==-- Veronaville "Two houses, alike in dignity... The Capps and Montys have been fueding for years, but that hasn't stopped the younger generation from crossing boundaries and falling in love. Will their actions lead to ruin, or bring the two families together? Patrizio Monty never forgot Consort Capp's broken promise. But now his grandson Romeo has fallen for the Capp heiress. Will the Elders live to see the two families united? Juliette Capp has fallen for Romeo, golden child of the rival Monty clan. Can the Capps set aside their grudge and put Juliette's happiness first? The Summerdreams' kindly nature and zest for life have cast a romantic spell over Veronaville's youth. But will there be any magic left for Puck? There are three families currently living in Veronaville. They are: Capp Summerdream Monty There are four families in the family bin waiting to move to the neighborhood, and they are: Monty Capp Capp Monty =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [1.2] Creating Your Family | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| If you thought that The Sims had a good Sim editor, wait until you check out the new one! You can change almost every aspect of your Sims appearance, from his stubble to his beard, his eyebrows to his nose, his eyes to his chin, anything! =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [1.2.1] Standard Options | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| When first creating a Sim, you have to choose some basic options. These options are: Name Pretty simple, just type in what this Sim's name will be. Gender Choose whether your Sim will be male or female. The left symbol is for female, the right for male. Age You choose how old this Sim will be. From left to right, the options are toddler, child, teenager, adult and elder. Color You choose your Sims skin color. From left to right, the options are light, tan, brown, and dark. The symbol next to the dark color will allow you to select any custom skin colors, if you have downloaded or made any. Weight You can choose to have your Sim be slim or fat. This stat will change over the course of the game, so this is just a starting point. Biography The little notebook icon to the bottom right of the options allows you to set up a bio for the Sim. If you don't feel like spending a lot of time creating your Sim, you can choose the dice icon at the top to randomize everything, or the six people icon to choose an existing Sim. Once the basics have been set up, you move on to the body. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [1.2.2] Body Options | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Now you're configuring the body of your Sim, and there is a hell of a lot to configure! Let's start at the beginning, going down the list. Head You can change the overall shape of your Sims head. These heads will be different depending on your Sims color, age, and sex. Hair Style & Color This option allows you to change what your Sims hair looks like, as well as what color it will be. There are several styles to choose from, as well as some hats, which include a top hat, a cowboy hat and a Viking horn hat. Out of the box, you can make your Sims hair color black, brown, yellow or red. The icon next to the red color allows you to use any custom hair styles you have made or downloaded. Face You can change your Sims face to suit your needs. You can make him look normal, unique, or flat out deformed. You start off by choosing a base face from the available selections, and then using the sliders underneath to further enhance your look. The sliders control everything from your cheek size to your face height (is your face far from your forehead, or close?). Brow You can change your eyebrow with these. Choose a base option, then use the sliders to further customize your Sim. The sliders allow you to change, among other things, the thickness of your brow, and it's rotation. Eyes You can change the appearance of your eyes. Choose what your eyes will look like with one of the base images, then use the sliders to customize further. Your eyes, by default, can be brown, light blue, dark blue, silver or green. Nose Change the shape of your nose by first selecting a base picture, then using the sliders. You can alter, among others, the size of your nose, and whether it points up, down, or normal. Mouth Your Sim can have a big mouth, a small mouth, or an average mouth. Choose a base picture, then use the sliders to go farther. The sliders control width, size, and shape. Chin Like the mouth, change your chin. Choose a base picture, then fiddle with the sliders. Will your chin be normal or flat? Will it stick out? --==--==-- After configuring your face options, you'll move on to the makeup department. Blush Give your Sims cheeks a blush, from one of several colors. Both males and females can use this. Eyeliner Is your Sim a goth? Give him or her some black eyeliner. Both males and females can use this. Eye Shadow Is your wife going to be a slut? Give her some deep eye shadow, showing off her heavy makeup use. Both males and females can use this. Lipstick Give your wife some ruby red lipstick, or your gothic kid some black. Both males and females can use this. --==--==-- After selecting your makeup (if any), you can choose different face options. Costume Makeup This part allows you to paint your Sims face. There are many a few different schemes available, including military camoflauge, and a cat pattern. Both males and females can use this. Glasses You can opt to give your Sim glasses. You can choose sunglasses with different color shades, or your traditional reading glasses. You don't have to be them glasses at all. Both males and females can use this. Eyebrow Style There are only three choices out of the box, so choose the one that suits you. Both males and females can use this. Stubble If you desire, you can give your Sim some stubble. Not a full fledged beard, but he's not bare, either. This can only be used by males. Beard or Moustache Used in conjunction with stubble, you can give your Sim a unique look. Give him a moustache and a goatee with some beard stubble, and you'll have a dirty looking Sim. This can only be used by males. --==--==-- After customizing your Sims face, you then move on to his or her clothing. Everyday Outfit You can choose to mix and match different shirts or pants, or select the "Suits" option to select pre-made clothing combinations. Formal Outfit Choose what your Sim will wear formally. You'll wear this to a Wedding Party if you have one. Undies Choose what your Sims will go to bed in if you make them "Sleep in Underwear". Choose PJs Choose what your Sims will go to bed in if you make them "Sleep in PJs". Choose Swimwear Choose what your Sims will wear when they go swimming, or they relax in the hot tub. Choose Athletic Outfit Choose what your Sims will wear when they're working out on the exercise machine. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [1.3] Your Sims Aspiration, Personality and Characteristics | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Once you've set up your clothing, you can move on choosing your Sims lifetime aspiration. For more information on aspirations, see the Aspiration section. You can also select your Sims sign and characteristics. Like the first game, all twelve Zodiac signs are here, and they are: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Some signs are attracted to certain signs and repelled by others. These are: YOUR SIGN YOU LIKE YOU HATE =========================================================== Aries Gemini / Taurus Cancer / Libra Taurus Aries / Libra Virgo / Cancer Gemini Pisces / Virgo Capricorn / Aries Cancer Taurus / Scorpio Gemini / Aries Lep Sagittarius / Cancer Capricorn / Gemini Virgo Aquarius / Sagittarius Leo / Taurus Libra Virgo / Cancer Pisces / Scorpio Scorpio Pisces / Lep Libra / Aquarius Sagittarius Pisces / Capricorn Libra / Scorpio Capricorn Aquarius / Taurus Leo / Gemini Aquarius Capricorn / Sagittarius Scorpio / Virgo Pisces Scorpio / Gemini Leo / Aries =========================================================== After choosing your sign, you can keep the default characteristics, or you can alter them. Descriptions wrapped in quotation marks are taken from the game. The five available characteristics are: Sloppy/Neat Sloppy Sims won't pick up after themselves, flush the toilet or make the bed, while neat Sims will have no problem doing this, taking out the trash, or throwing out rotten food. Sloppy: "With their constant disregard of cleanliness and hygiene, sloppy Sims are content to simply "be." They tend to enjoy just about anything that doesn't require planning or cleaning up on their part." Neat: "Tidy Sims typically enjoy cleaning up the house or grooming themselves in front of a mirror. There's always something to be done around the house and they'll more often than not be found doing it; great for a house, but it can tire Sims out." Special notes for Neat Sims: - The Cleaning skill increase faster with Neat Sims - Neat Sims gain Fun when cleaning things - Neat Sims will clean a toddler's high chair once he/she is removed from it Special notes for Sloppy Sims: - Sloppy Sim's Hygiene decreases faster - Sloppy Sim's stuff food into their mouths, which may lower their relationship with any neat Sims eating with them - Sloppy Sims lose Fun when cleaning things - Sloppy Sims may eat from the trash, or on food that's attracted flies if their Hunger drops low enough (if Free Will is turned on) - Sloppy Sims will leave toys on the ground after finished with them, instead of putting them back in the toy box --==--==-- Shy/Outgoing Shy Sims won't want to join in on group activities, but outgoing Sims need social action. Social drops fastest for them. Shy: "Introspective and quiet, shy Sims often think about the world around them and write in their diaries rather than actually interact with anyone. It may be harder to break out of their shells, but if shy Sims take the time to get to know others they'll be delighted by the social world awaiting them." Outgoing: "Outgoing Sims are likely to jump headfirst into any situation. Charm and confidence are their best traits and when they're in a friendly mood they enjoy group activities most of all. Keep an eye on these characters, though; outgoing Sims can be too brash, and others aren't always so impressed." Special notes for Shy Sims: - Social motive decreases slowly - A Shy Sim will run away if a fight occurs in the same room as them Special notes for Outgoing Sims: - Social meter decreases fast - With an Outgoing point of eight or more, Sims will enter the hot tub naked - Outgoing Sims will talk to the decorative garden objects (if Free Will is on, or if you're watering/trimming) - Male Sims with Outgoing of nine or more will urinate on a bush if Bladder is too low (if Free Will is on) --==--==-- Lazy/Active Lazy Sims have more fun watching TV or playing a game, while active sims like working out, swimming, or doing other strenuous activities. Lazy: "Lazy Sims have been known to veg out on the couch for hours on end, so naturally, they don't need much sleep to sustain their constant lazying. They still enjoy socializing wiht other Sims and can be persuaded to get out of the house once in a while." Active: "Active Sims are almost always on the move but need a lot of food and sleep to keep up their hectic pace. They're apt to be happiest while breaking a sweat, an exhausting idea to most other Sims. An active Sim will usually get more enjoyment from watching sports on TV than reading a book." Special notes for Lazy Sims: - Can't run all the time; only if where you want them to go is far away - With Free Will on, a lazy Sim may turn off of the alarm clock, and miss work. This has happened just once to me; it seems to be very rare - With Free Will on, a lazy Sim will get a snack from the refrigerator, even if their Hunger motive is full - Lazy Sims won't put books back in the bookshelf when they're finished reading them* Special notes for Active Sims: - Will run anywhere, even if it's two inches in front of them - Energy decreases slowy, doesn't need as much time sleeping to refill it --==--==-- Serious/Playful Serious sims don't like playing too much ("Play" commands fail more often), while playful Sims like to tickle and be tickled, play red hand, etc. Serious: "Quiet, thoughtful Sims are more inclined to enjoy logic puzzles and good conversation, but they don't respond too well to chaos or silly behavior. Repairing broken items or working on an important project can keep serious Sims content." Playful: "Playful Sims are more likely to find entertainment and fun in the world around them; they tend to be more curious than any other Sim. They may have a lighthearted nature, but they can wear themselves out with their antics, as well as get on their fellow Sim's nerves." Special notes for Serious Sims: - Serious Sims can increase the Logic skill faster than anyone else - Fun decreases slowly, and reading a book or playing chess increases it the fastest Special notes for Playful Sims: - Fun decreases fast; playing games increases it the most - With a Playful rating of six or more, your Sim can "Skip" in addition to the normal "Go Here" --==--==-- Grouchy/Nice Grouchy Sims will have a hard time making friends and staying friendly, but nice Sims can charm and become friends easily. Grouchy: "Grouch Sims, despite their sour mood, can still be social creatures. They'll probably enjoy teasing a Sim as much as telling a joke. They don't seem to mind when other Sims overreact and they like playing a game as much as anyone else, but be warned: they tend to be sore losers." Nice: "Encouraging and generous, nice Sims tend to be easy to get along with and very positive. They'll listen to what other Sims have to say whether it's interesting or not and clean up after dirty roommates. If they don't watch out though, other Sims may take advantage of their good nature." Special notes for Grouchy Sims: - If an "Argue" action is used against you, Grouchy Sims usually gain some Social from it - Grouchy Sims with a rating of four or less will sometimes spy on someone using the telescope (if Free Will is on) - With a rating of four or less, Grouchy Sims may knock over your garbage can or steal your garden gnome - Grouchy Sims will taunt two people who are playing a game Special notes for Nice Sims: - Nice Sims will lose social and relationship if they have to "Argue" - Nice Sims will cheer two people who are playing a game Once you've selected your Sims aspiration and sign, you can move on. * Thanks to Erik =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [1.4] Making a Baby/Genetics | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| When you have at least one male and one female adult in one family, you can choose to Make a Baby, instead of creating one with the normal tools. When choosing this option, the characteristics of both parents are given to the child, so they will have a similar appearance to their parents. If the mother is fat while the father has huge eyes, your baby Sim will take on these traits, although not to extreme amounts. Clicking the pacifier icon in the middle of the screen will allow you to randomize your baby again and again, until you find something you like. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [1.5] Setting Up Your Family Tree | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Once your family is finished, you can configure the family tree. By dragging and dropping the pictures of your Sims onto others, you can set what their relationship will be. Dragging an elder on top of an adult will allow you to make the elder the parent of the adult, while dropping the adult over a child will allow you to make the adult that child's parent. Dragging two adults over one another will let you make those two adults roomies, siblings or spouses. Toddlers, children and teenagers can also be siblings of one another. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [2] Setting Up Your Neighborhood | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| When your family has been created, you can move them into a neighborhood. Before doign that, however, there are some things you can do. To find a place for your Sims to live, you need to build a house. You can do this by placing a lot, then building on that lot. If you don't want to build a house, there are several that come pre-built with the game, and all you have to do is decorate it. If you choose to build your own house, there are ten lots you can buy, all a different size. You place these lots adjacent to any road. You must type a name for the lot, and choose whether it'll be a community lot or a residential lot. Sims can only move into residential lots. You also have the option of decorating your neighborhood. You can plant flora, which includes trees and shrubs; landmarks, which include signposts, a water tower and a satellite; effects, which include clouds and balloons; stones, which include rocks and formations; and miscellaneous objects. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3] Your Sims | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| The stars of the game are your Sims. Whether they are man or woman, toddler or child, teenager or elder, they are the driving force behind the game. You can build the biggest mansion in the world, but it'll all be useless without some Sims to live inside it. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.1] Motives | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| There are eight motives that you are required to keep up. Some motives take importance another one, which controls how your Sim acts when Free Will is turned on. For example, if a Sim's Hunger and Fun rating are both in the red, they will choose Hunger first, because your Sim can live without Fun, and will die if Hunger isn't fulfilled. Some of the motives also have "Desperation" actions that occur autonomously if that motive gets in the far red. Descriptions wrapped in quotation marks are from the game. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.1.1] Hunger | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "A refrigerator is the first stop for any hungry Sim. Cooking skill and appliances will affect the quality of the different meals Sims can prepare. If they don't feel like cooking, then can call for a pizza!" Hunger is the most important motive, because it is the only one that can kill your Sim directly (Energy can kill you as well, but it's indirect). Hunger can be fulfilled a number of ways. You can use the phone to order pizza, which costs your Sim $40. You can grill food on the barbecue, have a snack from the refrigerator, use the microwave or toaster oven to warm up food, or the oven to make food. When cooking your own food, there are a few factors that are taken into consideration. Number one is the type of equipment you have. An expensive fridge will have better tasting food then a cheap fridge, and an expensive oven will cook food better then a cheap oven. If you have a food processor, food will taste better. If you don't, you'll have to prepare the food yourself, and it won't taste as good. Then, of course, your Cooking skill is taken into effect. The higher the skill is, the better tasting your food will be, and the less chance of a fire breaking out. Here is a flow chart of how to make the best food: 1) Take food from expensive refrigerator 2) Use food processor to prepare the food 3) Use oven to cook the food 4) Have a counter handy to place the finished food on --==--==-- Desperation Action ================== A low Hunger motive will result in your Sim rushing to the refrigerator and stuffing themselves by grabbing stuff and eating it. If no refrigerator is available, your Sim will die of hunger. (Thanks to Lauren for telling me the desperation action for Hunger) =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.1.2] Comfort | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "Sims of all ages love to be comfortable. This need will get pretty low if there isn't a nice cozy couch or chair to sit down on. Taking a warm bath or soaking in the hot tub is another great way for Sims to relax." Comfort is the second least important motive. Yes, it makes your mood go even greener, but nothing bad will happen as a result of low comfort. The worst thing to happen is your Sim may refuse to do something until they increase their comfort score. To improve comfort, sit on a chair, couch or recliner. You can also go to sleep, use the toilet, bath or hot tub, or relax on the bed. --==--==-- Desperation Action ================== There is no specific desperation for Comfort. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.1.3] Bladder | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "When a Sim's gotta go, a Sim's gotta go. And there's really only one solution to that kind of problem--get them to a toilet as fast as possible." Bladder is one of the quickest draining motives, and it is fairly important. It drains at a normal rate, but will drain quickly if you eat something, drink at the bar, or drink coffee. The worst part of this motive is if you let it fail, and your Hygiene takes a dive. To improve Bladder, just use a toilet. The more expensive the toilet, the less time you need to sit on it to fill the motive up. --==--==-- Desperation Action ================== When your Bladder is completely red, your Sim will pee on the floor, where they are standing. Your Bladder motive will be instantly recharged, but your Hygiene motive will go completely red. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.1.4] Energy | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "Nothing replaces a good night's sleep, but in a pinch Sims can settle for a nap on the couch, a snooze in the recliner, or a steaming cup of coffee to boost their energy." Energy is one of the mid-important motives. It drains at a fairly slow rate, unless you're doing something strenuous, like swimming or exercising on the machine. When swimming, you'll need to make sure your Energy doesn't empty completely. You can increase Energy by sleeping on a bed, napping on a sofa, sleeping in a recliner, or drinking coffee. --==--==-- Desperation Action ================== If your Energy goes completely red, you'll fall asleep right where you are. If you are in an open space, your Sim will fall to the ground, sleeping. If you are in tight quarters, you'll sleep standing up. This improves Energy, but it does so very slowly, and your Comfort takes a hit. If you're swimming and your Energy empties completely, get ready to have someone plead with the Grim Reaper, because you've just killed your Sim. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.1.5] Fun | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "Fun means something different to everyone. Some Sims may prefer reading while others like watching TV. Most Sims will enjoy playing a game of pinball or darts with other Sims." Fun is a fairly important motive, because it will cause your overall mood to hang low. However, it's also one of the easiest to maintain. To improve your Fun motive, just do something fun. This includes reading a book or newspaper (moreso for serious Sims), playing a game on the computer, playing darts, playing a video game, watching television, playing pinball, and a few more. The more expensive the item, the faster it improves. Watching TV on the big wall-mounted TV will increase the motive at three times the rate of the black TV on the stand. --==--==-- Desperation Action ================== There is no desperation action for Fun, save for your Sim refusing to do something until it's increased. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.1.6] Social | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "Sims are friendly creatures that crave social interaction. They can fulfill their needs by interacting with friends, family, and neighbors. The telephone is a great way for Sims to invite people over or to catch up on the latest gossip." Social is the second important motive next to Hunger, and is very important to Outgoing Sims. It drains somewhat fast, and takes longer to improve then other motives. If you let Social get too far red, you'll get paid a visit by the Social Bunny. You can do anything to him without fear of relationships, and it'll let you increase Social. However, if your Sim's current fear is that of the Social Bunny, his arrival will cost you some Aspiration Points. To increase Social, talk to someone. You can phone them and talk, invite somebody over, chat with them online, send them e-mail, or throw a party. --==--==-- Desperation Action ================== There is no desperation action for Social, save for your Sim refusing to do something until it's increased, and the appearance of the Social Bunny. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.1.7] Hygiene | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "Taking a shower might seem like a usual part of any Sim's routine, but it's surprising how often it gets overlooked and how low this motive can get. Taking a bath is a more relaxing solution if the Sims can find some extra time." Hygiene is one of the most important motives. It drains slowly, unless you're working out, and increases fairly fast. Smelly Sims can do everything other Sims can, but some Sims may be put off by the stink, making actions like Hug, Kiss, Flirt, etc. fail. To increase Hygiene, take a shower or a bath. Going into the Hot Tub also improves it, but at a slower rate. You may also wash your hands at a sink. --==--==-- Desperation Action ================== If you have no shower or bathtub, but you have a sink, your Sims desperation action will be to head to the sink to give themselves a spongebath. If there is no sink, your Hygiene will just stay in the red until you buy something. Your Sim will also refuse to do anything until it's increased, and other Sims won't want to kiss/hug/flirt with you. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.1.8] Environment | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "Decorations and landscaping around the lot will affect the environment. Sims like bright, clean spaces with plenty of color and light. A well kept house and yard will surely fulfill this need." Environment is the least important action. This motive is determined by the surroundings of your Sim. Environment changes from room-to-room, as in any place separated by a door. It doesn't increase or decrease normally as other motives do. The most important aspect of Environment is outside, when you go to work. If the outside of your house is beautiful, then your Sims mood will remain high when they leave the house to go to work. For those who played the original game, Environment is the new name for the "Room" score. To increase Environment, make your rooms look nice. Throw out any trash, dispose of any dirty dishes, kill any cockroaches, and add some decorative items, like paintings or sculptures. For outside, make sure all plants are watered, dispose of any dried up plants, and make sure the hedges are trimmed. --==--==-- Desperation Action ================== There is no desperation action for Environment. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.2] Love | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Love is a very important aspect of The Sims 2. If you don't have a love, you can't get married, can't have children, and you'll die old and alone. Compared to the first game, it's a lot harder to fall in love with someone this time around. You can't keep performing the same actions over and over again to increase your relationship, otherwise you risk damaging your relationship and having actions fail. Assuming you are starting with a Sim whose relationship with you is zero, you will want to get started by talking. Only use the "Chat" action, as bragging can have a bad effect. After you get between fifteen and twenty (which may take some time, depending on compatible your Sims are), throw in a "Joke" and the odd friendly hug. At twenty-five to thirty, start appreciating and flirting with the Sim. "Admire" and "Backrub" both work good, and "Suggestion" and "Hit On" are good flirting actions. When you get to about forty-five, throw in a friendly kiss, like the Peck, and keep appreciating/flirting with the Sim. Once you get past fifty, you should be friends, so now flirt and appreciate. Use the bigger flirt actions, like "Caress", and keep "Admiring" and "Backrub"-ing the Sim. Once you get to sixty, start kissing and hugging. If everything is fine, and your two Sims are compatible, you should get a crush (the small, pink-colored heart) by seventy or seventy-five. Now, you're pretty much free to do whatever you want. Do romantic/tender kisses, and once you hit eighty, start "Making Out". Once you reach 100, if you're not lovers yet, kiss and hug two times in a row, but never three times in a four-hour game-time period, or the action will most likely fail. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.3] Aging | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| One of the biggest changes to The Sims is the addition of aging. Your Sims now age from baby to toddler, toddler to child, child to teenager, teenager to adult, and adult to elder. Elders will eventually die of old age, although there are two ways to prevent this (see "Cheat Codes" and "Aspiration Rewards"). To begin, you must first get pregnant. To do this, have two Sims of the opposite sex perform the "Try for Baby" action. You can do this by having the two Sims relax in bed, then choosing "Try for Baby". Your two Sims will do a WooHoo. At the end of the action, if the action was successful, you'll hear a small part of "Rock-a-Bye Baby" play. The Sim is now pregnant. It takes three Sim days to have a child, and each day is preceeded by your female Sim's belly growing bigger and bigger. Once the Sim is about to give birth, all other Sims in the house gather around to witness it, and a cutscene will take over, showing your Sim's green arrow breaking off into two. You now have a baby! The baby requires constant attention. It is not yet a controllable family member, so like the first game, you have to guess what it wants. You'll be able to play with the baby, cuddle it, feed it (with a bottle from the fridge), and bathe it (in a sink). You'll be required to change it's diapers, which you will be able to tell when you see the green stink trail following the baby. Assuming you take good care of it, and the Social Worker doesn't show up, your baby will become a toddler in three days. A toddler requires a lot of attention too, but not as much as a baby. There are far more social interactions available. You can play with the toddler, talk to it, feed it, and bathe it in the tub. If you want your toddler to be happy when it grows up, you'll also have to teach it to walk, talk and use the toilet. You have the ability to control the toddler, so once it becomes potty trained and learns to walk, you can tell it to use the toilet so you can avoid changing diapers, and possibly meeting the "Change Diapers" fear. After five days, your toddler becomes a child. A child is fairly independent, but they do require a bit of attention. A child can perform almost any action an adult can, except major ones like cooking, WooHoo'ing and Making Out. You can begin to train the child to become a smart adult by having them earn skills (all seven are available). Your child will also begin going to school, 7:00am - 3:00pm, Monday to Friday. As the parent, you will also have the option of trying to get the child into private school by calling the Headmaster. After eight days, your child will become a teenager. Teenagers are pretty much independent, and they gain access to more social interactions, like kissing. Your teen will also attend school, normally 7:00am to 3:00pm, Monday to Friday. You may get your teen a job in any of the ten career paths, but they are specific to teenagers, and there are only three positions per career. If you get your teenager a job, they will always arrive home from school an hour before the carpool arrives for their job. After twelve days, your teen becomes an adult. An adult is just like the Sims from the first game. They usually make smart decisions, and can look after themselves. Adults have access to all the social interactions, except child ones, like "Noogie" and "Cops and Robbers". They can get engaged, married, or joined (for same-sex couples). They have the ability to move out of the house and find their own place, and they can advance up any career path through all ten positions. After twenty-nine days, your adult will become an elder. An elder is similar to a teenager, meaning the jobs they get will only have a maximum of three levels. They can do anything an adult can. Depending on how you play, and if you use the Elixir of Life, your elder will be a different age when you finally become one. Elders will eventually die of old age. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.4] Skills | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Your Sim has seven skills which allow him or her to do different things. Cooking governs how good your Sims food tastes, Creativity controls how good your paintings are and the songs you can play on the piano, while Cleaning lets your Sim be a neater person. Skills are the foundation of any job, and pretty much every job of every career path requires some skills to be at a certain level. Descriptions wrapped in quotation marks are from the game. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.4.1] Cooking | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "Sims that keep reading and cooking to build this skill will be surprised by how much more satisfying their meals become. Cooking is especially important if your Sim entertains ideas of one day becoming a famous chef and hopes to avoid kitchen disasters." To increase your Cooking skill, you can: - Read a book from the bookshelf (Study Cooking) - Cook any kind of food - Watch the Yummy station on television - Make chocolate with the Schokolade 890 Chocolate Manufacturing Facility (Career Reward Object) =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.4.2] Mechanical | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "Being handy around the house can save money in expensive repair costs and allows your Sim to advance in certain careers. Sims can improve this skill by studying do-it-yourself books from a bookshelf or by repairing broken items at home." To increase your Mecahnical skill, you can: - Read a book from the bookshelf (Study Mechanical) - Attempt to repair any broken objects - Use the TraumaTime "Incision Precision" Surgical Training Station (Career Reward Object) =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.4.3] Charisma | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "Sims know that good communication, public speaking ability and confidence are essential skills for several careers, especially something as social as Politcs. They should spend some time practicing in front of any mirror to improve this skill. Nice, outgoing Sims are especially good at building Charisma." To increase your Charisma skill, you can: - Use any mirror to "Practice Speech" - Use the Enterprise Office Concepts Bushmaster Tele-prompter (Career Reward Object) - Use the Execuputter (Reward Object) =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.4.4] Body | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "Strength, dexterity and speed can be improved by swimming or working out on the exercise machine. Keep your Sim in shape and their body skill will be especially valuable in the Athletic or Military career tracks. Active Sims can build this skill more quickly than others." To increase your Body skill, you can: - Go swimming in the pool - Use the weight machine - Work out to the television - Work out to the stereo - Do Yoga - Use the Exerto Punching Bag (Career Reward Object) - Use the Exerto Selfflog Obstacle Course (Career Reward Object) Once you earn at least three points for Body, your Sim will be able to perform Yoga. To do this, you click on your Sim and choose "Do Yoga". While doing Yoga, your Sim will earn body points and increase their fitness. If you keep performing Yoga, your Sim will learn more advanced Yoga positions. It's kind of like a hidden, eighth skill. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.4.5] Logic | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "Logic combines deduction and organization ability. Sims can play chess or use the telescope to improve this sill which will be useful in the Medicine and Science career tracks. This is a good skill for lazier Sims to work on." To increase your Logic skill, you can: - Play or practice chess on the chessboard - Use the telescope to stargaze - Do the crossword in the newspaper (thanks to Gaidin000) - Use the Simsanto Inc. Biotech Station (Career Reward Object) Once you earn at least three points for Logic, your Sim will be able to meditate, which is accomplished by clicking on your Sim and choosing "Meditate". After six hours of meditating, you will be able to float around the house instead of walking. After fourteen hours, you will be able to teleport by clicking on a spot and choosing "Teleport Here". While meditating, your Sims will not lose any motives, so it's a good way of keeping your mood up for work. You can improve all your motives, meditate, and when the carpool arrives, teleport to just outside the door, and enter the car, keeping your perfect mood. It's a great way of moving up the ladder, but people who thought the "Makin' Magic" expansion gave you too many ways of cheating won't like this aspect. =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.4.6] Creativity | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "Let your Sims try a hand at painting and playing the piano to improve their creativity; it can play an important part in many different career tracks. This skill includes artistic and musical ability as well as the potential for invention. A light-hearted Sim tends to be more open to creativity." To increase your Creativity skill, you can: - Play on the piano - Paint a picture on the easel - Write a novel on the computer - Use the SensoTwitch Lie Finder (Career Reward Object) - Use the AquaGreen Hydroponic Garden (Career Reward Object) =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.4.7] Cleaning | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| "It goes without saying that a clean house is a happy house, but Sims should work on their housekeeping abilities to make the cleaning process quicker and easier. They can tidy up around the house to improve this skill; it comes most naturally to neater Sims." To increase your Cleaning skill, you can: - Clean up messes (puddles from the shower, etc.) - Read a book from the bookshelf (Study Cleaning) - Use the Prints Charming Fingerprinting Scanner (Career Reward Object) =============================================================================== |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | [3.5] Memories | |-----------------------------------------------------------------------------| Each Sim has memories, that over the course of the game, get added to the memory panel. Memories will happen when your Sim quits a job or gets fired, has a child, gets married, has someone die, so on and so forth. If you see any duplications, let me know and I'll remove them. Memories here are presented in alphabetical order. --==--==-- _____ Got an A+ =============== Description "Good for you! It's great to see someone working so hard to reach the top!" Depending on your cooking level, you can cook more and more types of food, which can satisfy hunger more and more. However, as a downside, the more exotic foods cost more then the standard foods. This section lists all the foods you can cook, what skill you need to be able to cook it, how much it costs for you to "have" it, and how much it costs for you to "serve" it. The list is ordered by cooking skill. There are no new foods earned with level nine, so I didn't include it. "N/A" means "not applicable".
