Many game magazines have reported that in their rush to beat NFL Blitz, Sony failed in making NFL Xtreme. While some parts of the game would point to this other parts point to a solid and fun game. Xtreme is a five-on-five, high scoring, fast paced game where the quarterback can throw to any of the other four players.
NFL Xtreme's graphics are similar to the graphics in NFL Gameday ‘98. The only difference is that Xtreme’s graphics are smoother. When a player scores a touchdown and dances in the end zone you can’t see the two polygons that make up his leg, the knee joint is smooth and life like.
The game has a good variety of plays and not many of them will work every time, although some of them do work most of the time. One of the downfalls of this game is the defense. Even at the lowest level I found myself allowing fifty points a game.
The game play is almost identical to the game play of Gameday ‘98. The controller configuration is easy to get used to and suits the game well.
In most areas graphics, game play, and fun, this game adds up. If you really want a five-on-five football game and can’t wait for NFL Blitz to come out, or if you want to see the Jets’ new uniforms and Curtis Martin playing for them this is a good investment. Even rookies are included in the game, they have all of their real attributes except Ryan Leaf is SD QB #16, etc. You won’t be disappointed in this game, but you may find yourself asking, why didn’t Sony. . .?
