The History of Mortal Kombat| ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ When Mortal Kombat launched into arcades nationwide in 1992, it shocked and amazed fighting game fans. From it's excessive blood and gore to the amazing motion-captured moves, Mortal Kombat was born. The basic premise of this new and advanced fighter, was to choose a character and battle it out to the death with another human opponent or the CPU. What set this game apart from inferior fighting games, *cough* Street Fighter *cough* was, as stated earlier, its excessive use of blood and gore. After a match concluded, the announcer screamed "Finish Him!" At this point the player had the opportunity to input a series of directional button presses to hopefully perform the desired, what was then known as, Finishing Move, on his or her opponent. Finishing Moves were often very bloody and gory, somehow reigning death upon the opponent. Some Finishing Moves included Sub-Zero's infamous spine rip, where he would rip off his opponent's head with the spinal cord still attached, along with Kano plunging his hand deep into his fallen opponent's chest, and violently ripping out his or her heart. Mortal Kombat was amazingly popular for its time, drawing huge crowds to various arcades nationwide. A sequel was therefore, inevitable. The sequel to this rapidly growing and popular fighter was aptly named, Mortal Kombat II. Mortal Kombat II launched into arcades in 1993, a year after its predecessor. This new and improved Mortal Kombat brought what the original title had brought to the table, plus more. The new Mortal Kombat introduced seven (7) new playable characters to the series, as well as returning favorites. Each character also had two (2), now what came to be known as Fatalities, as opposed to the original one (1). Each fighter also possessed a Babality and a Friendship. These new "Finishing Moves" were implemented because of the series' negative media response, claiming it was harming America's youth with its excessive violence. They were added to give the Mortal Kombat series some comic relief, and rid it of some of the game's violence. The Babality was simple. A character would transform his fallen opponent into a baby, complete with a diaper. The Friendship, on the other hand, was humorous in it's own right. One example of a Friendship was Baraka's present giver. Baraka held out his finger, and then reached behind him and brought out a present for his opponent. Another very humorous Friendship was Liu Kang's. During Kang's Friendship, a disco ball would lower, and the player would see Liu Kang dance under the ball to disco music. Mortal Kombat II was a massive success, and is revered by many Mortal Kombat fans as the best of the series. Because of Mortal Kombat II's success, Mortal Kombat 3 was on its way. When Mortal Kombat 3 finally hit arcades in 1995, it was met with critical acclaim. It had been two years since the last iteration in this storied series and fans were getting restless. Most fighting game fans had moved on to the new 3-D fighter, Namco's Tekken. The Mortal Kombat elite returned for Mortal Kombat 3 though, but were left with a mediocre sequel that offered more of the same. The now traditional Fatalities, Babalities, and Friendships made a return, along with an all-new -ality, the Animality. The Animality was simple. The character would transform into some sort of animal and maul/kill his or her opponent in various ways. Some favorites include Cyrax's Great White Shark. Cyrax morphed into the shark, went under the screen, and came up on his victim with a huge chomp, devouring his opponent in one bite. Sub-Zero's polar bear was also popular. Sub-Zero transformed into a polar bear that would then proceed to fall on his victim and maul them to death. Mortal Kombat 3 was not well-received, so Midway set out to expand Mortal Kombat 3 with an "expansion pack" of sorts to MK3, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 launched later in the same year as Mortal Kombat 3 (1995). It offered players five (5) returning favorites, who missed the cut in Mortal Kombat 3: Scorpion, Reptile, Kitana, Mileena, and Classic Sub-Zero, as well as offering players two (2) characters new to the franchise, Jade and Ermac. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 also offered plenty of new fighting arenas, including the popular Jade's Desert. Some Mortal Kombat 3 characters received move upgrades, balancing everyone's move sets. UMK3 was mildly successful. The Mortal Kombat development team was fresh out of new and innovative ideas. However, they did come up with a "new" Mortal Kombat game. The game would be a compilation of sorts, combining almost every Mortal Kombat character into one game. This game came to be named Mortal Kombat Trilogy. Mortal Kombat Trilogy launched in 1996 only on home consoles. This "new" Mortal Kombat allowed players the chance to play as three (3) returning favorites in, Johnny Cage, Baraka, and Raiden, not seen since Mortal Kombat II, and two (2) brand new characters in Noob Saibot, and Rain. Mortal Kombat Trilogy was merely a compilation of all the previous games in one. Nothing new and innovative was introduced unfortunately. The only real addition to the game not seen in previous iterations, was the Brutality. The player would input a series of nine (9) button presses, having the character perform a massive overlaying combo, eventually leading to the opponent exploding. It was mildly entertaining, but offered nothing new to pique casual gamers' interest. John Tobias, the lead storywriter for Mortal Kombat set out to create a side-story to MK. This game featured Sub- Zero, chronicling his adventures outside of the Mortal Kombat Tournament. The game came to be known as Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero. Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero debuted for the Nintendo 64, and the Sony PlayStation in 1997. As mentioned above, the game followed Sub-Zero on his journeys outside of the Tournament. It was an action/RPG side-scrolling game. As Sub-Zero defeated enemies, he gained experience points which were used to upgrade Sub's move-set. Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub- Zero was received to an open-armed audience as many Mortal Kombat fans were eagerly anticipating John Tobias' foray into the action/RPG market, as Tobias is/was revered as a great storywriter. Ed Boon, one of Mortal Kombat' founders, then set out to produce another brand-new Mortal Kombat game. No more "expansion packs," no more compilations, an all-out new MK game, Mortal Kombat 4. Later on in the year 1997, Mortal Kombat 4 was launched into arcades across the United States. MK4 even had a road trip, which spanned the country previewing the new Mortal Kombat game at arcades everywhere. Mortal Kombat 4 was the first title in the series to play in "full" 3-D. There were a handful of new characters in this game, including: Reiko, Jarek, Fujin, Quan Chi, Kai, Shinnok, and Tanya. Mortal Kombat 4 was a return to the series' darker roots. The game featured dark storylines of revenge, deceit, and hatred. The game returned to only two (2) Fatalities per character. No more of those other "-alities" that brought comic relief to the series. A unique twist on the traditional hand-to-hand combat was the inclusion of character specific weapons. At any point during the match, the player had the choice of pulling out a deadly weapon. Some weapons included Scorpion's massive broadsword, Jax and Reiko's spiked clubs, Sonya's spinning blades, and even Tanya's boomerang. Weapons added a whole new layer of strategy to Mortal Kombat 4. The weapons were able to be thrown and dropped when hit, and the weapons even had their own move-set. Mortal Kombat 4 implemented some new ideas, but these innovations were overshadowed with the arcade releases of Namco's Soul Calibur, and Tekken 3. Mortal Kombat 4 will always be remembered as the first 3-D Mortal Kombat game. Not to be outdone, Ed Boon and company decided to release another "expansion pack" coinciding with the release of Sega's new Dreamcast system. In September of 1999, Midway released Mortal Kombat Gold. Mortal Kombat Gold closely resembles Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, content-wise. It added five (5) returning characters to Mortal Kombat 4's already meaty fighter lineup. The characters added were Cyrax, Mileena, Baraka, Kitana, and Kung Lao. This new iteration added nothing new to the series gameplay-wise unfortunately. Mortal Kombat Gold did not fare too well on the Dreamcast because of the lack of gameplay additions, all of its bugs and glitches, and most importantly, its main competition, Soul Calibur, the top fighting game by far, at the time. A year later in 2000, John Tobias decided to undertake another action/RPG clone, a la Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub- Zero. This time the game was to be in full 3-D, chronicling the adventures of Jax on his adventures in trying to capture his arch-nemesis, Kano. The game came to be called Mortal Kombat: Special Forces. The game featured a level-up system much like MKM:SZ. Instead of learning new moves, Jax learned new combos. Halfway through development, John Tobias left Midway completely, for undisclosed reasons. This occurrence all but ensured Mortal Kombat: Special Forces would grow only to become a complete failure. Mortal Kombat: Special Forces was a failure because of its lack of innovation, poor graphics and gameplay. This game tarnishes Mortal Kombat's record as the storied fighting game franchise everyone thought of it as. Two and a half years later, Ed Boon and his development team in Chicago now embark upon an entirely new MK, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. On "Fatality Friday," November 19th, 2002, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance was released to the masses. Shedding the number "5" at the end of it's title, to seem more as a rebirth of the series, rather than a sequel, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance sought to regain the top spot Mortal Kombat once held. Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance featured fully 3-D digitized characters with 5,000 to 6,000 polygons each. The game also featured full 8-way movement with multiple fighting styles per character. This fighting style aspect, was rarely, if ever seen in a fighting game before. The game was in development for a few years and it was clear the developers would not settle for anything less than the best. They accomplished just what they set out to do, as Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance went on to sell millions of copies worldwide. It made the PlayStation 2's Greatest Hits line, the Xbox's Platinum Hits line, and the GameCube's Player's Choice Line. It's multiple fighting styles, and a return to the series' darker roots propelled this fighter to the top of the pack. It was only a matter of time before a sequel surfaced. What we have now is nothing short of phenomenal; what we have is an entirely new Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat: Deception. Before the release of Mortal Kombat: Deception however, Midway delivered a Mortal Kombat game exclusive to the Game Boy Advance in late August of 2003. That game was dubbed: Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition. This game was more or less an expansion pack to the already released Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance Game Boy Advance version. Only three (3) of MK:DA's characters made a return in MK:TE. Those characters were Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, and Scorpion. The game also featured characters not available in the original MK:DA: Bo Rai Cho, Johnny Cage, Raiden, Nitara, Mavado, Hsu Hao, Reptile, Cyrax, and Drahmin. MK:TE also featured an all new character into the Mortal Kombat universe: Sareena. TE also included old favorites Noob Saibot and Sektor. Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition also featured Weapon Fatalities, which was a first for the Mortal Kombat series as well. Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition was mildly successful, going out of production a short while after its release. This game was intended to tide gamers over until Midway's surprise sequel of 2004, Mortal Kombat: Deception. About 2 years after Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance's release, Mortal Kombat: Deception has surfaced to keep the fighting game crown firmly rooted on the head of the Mortal Kombat series. Also without a numeral at the end of its name, Mortal Kombat: Deception has completely reinvented the wheel. This new MK includes so many new and improved features, it is hard to find a place to begin. First and foremost, the game features almost exactly the same fighting engine Deadly Alliance used; there are still two hand-to- hand fighting styles, and one weapon style. There are many new and returning characters, multiple Fatalities per fighter, multi-tiered arenas, an all new overhauled Konquest Mode, new mini-games, (Kombat Chess, and Puzzle Kombat) and Death Traps (AKA Stage Fatalities). Midway has put a huge emphasis on the multi-tiered arenas as some arenas have Death Traps associated with them, taunting the player with their ominous presence. A first in the Mortal Kombat series is the inclusion of Hari Kari moves. These finishing moves act as the famous "Suicidealities" of yore, as you are given the opportunity to kill yourself before your opponent does. Fans familiar with DA will no doubt feel right at home with Deception. All of these new and improved features should once again propel the Mortal Kombat series to new heights. Mortal Kombat: Deception is the newest and most advanced entry into the series yet. Mortal Kombat is back and this time darker, gorier, and more surprising than ever. The series has been reborn. Are you ready to step inside the arena known as Mortal Kombat for the sixth time? ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ |II. The Story of Mortal Kombat: Deception| ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ "Long before Liu Kang had won the Mortal Kombat Tournament in Earthrealm, Shujinko had begun his quest to retrieve the Kamidogu for the Elder Gods... Now an ancient evil has returned from beyond death and threatens the very existence of the realms. Will the champion of the Elder Gods have the power to defeat this threat borne of deception? Only you can determine the future of the realms." The above is Mortal Kombat: Deception's story in a nutshell. As with every Mortal Kombat incarnation the story goes well beyond what is said above. When you first boot up Deception, you are treated to a very cool, very stylistic FMV sequence going into much more depth about the storyline. Below is a very detailed description of the happenings in said FMV. The FMV opens up with the camera panning up the steps to Shang Tsung's Palace from Deadly Alliance, Soulnado and all. Shujinko is narrating talking about how the Deadly Alliance had succeeded in defeating everyone who opposed them; and how they had successfully resurrected the Dragon King's ancient army. He then talks about how Raiden is the last of the kombatants. It then goes to a fight scene between Raiden, Shang Tsung, and Quan Chi; it is basically a 2 on 1. Raiden holds his own for a bit, shooting his adversaries with bolts of lightning. He is weakened, and Quan Chi hurls his green skull at Raiden who gets hit and flies back. Raiden then tries to blast Chi with a bolt of lightning only to have Quan raise a wall of green skulls to protect himself. Raiden continues to blast lightning at the wall and it finally breaks down hitting Quan Chi. With Shang Tsung wounded and on the ground, Shang reaches his hand toward the Soulnado and shoots a soul at Raiden knocking him down. Quan and Shang then both use their power to summon a snake made of fire to kill off Raiden once and for all. With Raiden levitating in mid- air, the snake lunges at Raiden, driving him hard into the ground, defeating him. With Raiden defeated, the Deadly Alliance turns on each other. Quan Chi and Shang Tsung have a short battle with Quan Chi getting the upper hand. Quan breaks Shang Tsung's hand and punches him in the face. As all this is happening, the ground starts to shake, and the camera pans to the opening to Shang Tsung's Palace. We then see the lumbering mass of Onaga, the Dragon King, walking toward the Deadly Alliance; as he walks past them, Onaga's army bows before him. Quan Chi and Shang Tsung being to hurl fireballs and green beams of energy at the Dragon King. These attacks don't phase him. As they are about to give up hope, Raiden comes to on his own and a new alliance is formed. The alliance of Raiden, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung, begin to shoot more fireballs and lightning at the Dragon King. With none of this working, Raiden begins to build up energy. Once the energy is fully built up, a blinding light causes everything around them to explode. Raiden had sacrificed himself to defeat the Dragon King. His sacrifice was in vain however, as the blast barely phased Onaga. With the palace in crumbles around him, the Dragon King picks up Quan Chi's amulet for himself. We are then taken to a scene where Shujinko (the narrator) talks about how he had brought the amulet to the Dragon King, and how he was deceived into doing so. Thus begins the story of Mortal Kombat: Deception. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- |III. Mortal Kombat: Deception Review| ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- When the image of a scowling Baraka made its way onto the internet signifying the return of Mortal Kombat, I couldn't have been happier. It had been a long time in the making, but the sequel to Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance was here at long last. Taking about two years to complete, Deception is taking fighting games where they have rarely been before: online. This marks the first time a Mortal Kombat game will be playable online, offering players the chance to engage in kombat with anyone around the world. Not only is the main arcade mode online, but also Deception's side games, Puzzle Kombat and Kombat Chess. Puzzle Kombat heavily influenced by Super Puzzle Fighter, and Kombat Chess closely resembling Archon, are playable online as well. In addition to these already meaty improvements is the vastly overhauled Konquest Mode. Konquest allows you to take a 13-year old boy and bring him on an adventure spanning almost 50 years. There will be more on Konquest and the side games later in the review. With so much material to cover, I better get to it; so without further ado, I present to you my review of Mortal Kombat: Deception. Much like Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance's fantastic opening FMV cut-scene, players of Deception are treated to something equally as entertaining. The opening FMV of Mortal Kombat: Deception chronicles the events following the conclusion of Deadly Alliance. We FINALLY find out what happens to the Deadly Alliance itself, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung. (SPOILER) It turns out that Raiden, Shang Tsung, and Quan Chi face off in a fight to the death. Raiden ends up "dying" only to have Quan Chi "kill" Shang Tsung. Right as he does this however, the Dragon King (Onaga) comes lumbering in. With Raiden and Tsung back up to fight, they try their hardest to stop this monstrosity. Their powers are weak, and Raiden literally explodes, sacrificing himself to save humankind as we know it. It is a VERY cool opening, and deserves to be mentioned. (SPOILER) Mortal Kombat Deception generously starts the player out with 12 characters; the rest of these fighters are hidden and must be unlocked through various methods. As is readily noticeable, Deception's cast features many familiar faces including, Kabal, Baraka, Nightwolf, Sindel, Mileena, and numerous others. It is no lie that Midway did their homework and brought back fighters that the people wanted. I applaud their efforts wholeheartedly (I definitely voiced my opinion of wanting Kabal back). Deception also throws a number of fresh faces into the mix including Ashrah, Dairou, Darrius, Kira, and Hotaru. These characters certainly should not be underestimated as they are every bit as lethal as the returning fighters. The three fighting style play mechanic makes a return to MK: Deception. Each character possesses 2 hand-to-hand fighting styles as well as one weapon style. These styles can be changed at will throughout the course of a match. This engine allows for almost an unlimited amount of kombos one can perform. They can start out a kombo in one style, then switch to a different fighting style mid-kombo and continue from there. The controls in this game are top-notch being very responsive and easy to use. One might consider the Training Mode a bit before actually getting it on with someone, so as to familiarize themselves with the play mechanic. When all is said and done, the controls will have come to grow on you and pulling off 10-hit Style Branch Combos spanning every style should become second nature. Mortal Kombat: Deception's graphics engine continues where Deadly Alliance's left off. The game looks almost identical to DA, but upon closer inspection one can identify many subtle differences. The main difference is the realistic backgrounds that Midway has crafted to fight in. The arenas in DA, were detailed, but Deception's arenas are breathtaking. They are absolutely enormous and span several different playing fields. The Death Traps Midway has incorporated into its arenas are simply awesome. They can play a pretty big role in the middle of a match, as one kick or punch can send your opponent (or yourself) into a trap you will never escape. The character models have also been beefed up to include more polygons per fighter. The graphics featured in Mortal Kombat: Deception are definitely a sight to behold, and are nonetheless astounding. Fatalities make a triumphant return to Deception, and per the public's numerous requests, each fighter has two, maybe you didn't hear me, TWO Fatalities, as well as his/her own Hari Kiri move. The Fatalities featured in Deception are much improved over Deadly Alliance's seemingly rushed death animations. They are all very brutal in nature, and pretty damn clever as well; a definite improvement over its predecessor. Hari Kiri's are new to the Mortal Kombat universe and basically entail the defeated player killing himself before his/her opponent has the opportunity to perform a Fatality on them. A clever idea indeed, but I didn't see myself performing Hari Kiri's all that often. In the end, Deception's graphics somehow one up Deadly Alliance's in the sense that they feature higher polygon counts per character, and massive arenas that are detailed down to the last bloody footprint. The announcer from Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance is back to narrate this entry into the series. He sounds just as good if not better than he did in Deadly Alliance. Deception's sound effects are also top-notch, from every weapon clash to grunt and scream, it is all represented here. The background music is something to be commended as well. I have never seen a more in-depth soundtrack to a fighting game; the game even allows you to listen to any track you want under the Kontent section. The Fatalities are the most gruesome since Mortal Kombat 4. The sound effects during some of these, is absolutely spine-tingling. You can hear every last drop of blood hit the ground, every last dying breath of your adversary, and every last muscle being torn from the bone. As always, the sound guys at Midway (especially Dan Forden) have come through in a big way improving on an already stellar sound package featured in Mortal Kombat 5. Kontinuing in the tradition of greatness, Mortal Kombat: Deception also features more unlockables than you can shake a stick at. You have the secret characters, the hidden arenas, the alternate costumes, the endings, the movies, the production photos etc. It is unbelievable how much Midway has crammed into this game. Konquest and the Krypt are where you will be unlocking most if not all of Deception's tightly kept secrets. The Krypt is back now featuring 400 koffins instead of 676 like Deadly Alliance; the lower number means better unlockables :). Konquest is the single-player game of Deception and Midway promises anywhere from 20-30 hours of gameplay from this alone! It starts you out as a young boy following you (Shujinko is his name) as you become a man learning many different martial arts. Deception's biggest secrets are hidden in Konquest, and they will be rewarded to those with enough patience. The only downside to Konquest mode however, is its relative lack of graphic oomph; it looks a bit jaggy and is not all that high resolution. One can't fault its decent graphics as this is a fighting game, not an adventure game; it is definitely nice to have. Midway has also included two new mini-games replacing the Test your Might and Sight of old. They are Kombat Chess and Puzzle Kombat. Kombat Chess plays much like the old PC game, Archon in that you pick different characters to represent the different pieces in the game. A match can take a long time, and you must be pretty good with a lot of the characters, as there is a lot of actual fighting going on here. Puzzle Kombat closely resembles Capcom's Super Puzzle Fighter of yore. It has you choosing from a cast of 12 characters (6 must be unlocked). It then throws you into a game where one must match up different colored blocks with the MK Dragon Symbol of the same color. It is a very fun diversion from the main game, and is an absolute blast playing head-to-head with a buddy. If the Konquest Mode, Chess Kombat, and Puzzle Kombat, were not enough to keep you busy, Mortal Kombat has expanded to the online realm. It is now possible to fight anyone, anywhere, anytime online; there is virtually NO lag whatsoever as you duke it out with a trash-talking Aussie. How cool is that? After all is said and done, Mortal Kombat: Deception can definitely stand up to the best of them (Soul Calibur and Tekken, I am talking to you). It has managed to improve upon everything that made Deadly Alliance so great. It has improved graphics and sound, multi-tiered arenas, more new characters, more Fatalities, new and very fun mini-games as well as a revamped Konquest Mode. This game will keep players busy for months if not years! The added online mode will definitely put a dent in your social life, as it is very addicting; it perfectly recreates the old arcade battles so long ago with Mortal Kombat 1, 2, and 3. Midway has completely gone out of their way to please fans of the series; they have done just that and more. I cannot wait to see what the Mortal Kombat team has up their sleeves for Mortal Kombat 7... ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ |IV. PlayStation 2 and Xbox Default Controls| ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Mortal Kombat: Deception's control setup is identical to Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance's in the sense that there are no traditional HP, LP, HK, and LK buttons. They have been replaced with Attack buttons numbering 1-4. The infamous and long-missed Uppercut from every past MK (except DA) has made a return as well. The Special Move button from Deadly Alliance that allowed a character to Throw, Taunt, Neijin etc. is nowhere to be seen. The Block button and Change Style buttons are identical; there is also no run button in Deception instead allowing characters to dash in and out. The real difference in controls between Deception and Deadly Alliance is because of the 2 new modes that this new Mortal Kombat offers: Puzzle Kombat and Kombat Chess; Konquest Mode also has its own set of buttons. The button configurations for the above modes will be detailed below as well. I go more in-depth on the fighting style, hand-to-hand, and weapon combat in the "Basic Weapon and Hand-to-Hand Moves" section. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- |PlayStation 2 Controls| ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- --->Arcade Mode Controls Walk Forward - Directional Button Right Walk Backward - Directional Button Left Walk Out -Directional Button Up Walk In - Directional Button Down Jump Forward - Directional Buttons Up and Right Jump Backward - Directional Buttons Up and Left Attack 1 - Square Attack 2 - Triangle Attack 3 - X Attack 4 - Circle Throw: R1 Grab Weapon - L2 Block - R2 Change Fighting Style - L1 Pause - Start --->Konquest Controls Move Shujinko - Left Analog Stick Rotate Camera - Right Analog Stick Attack - Square Center Camera - Triangle Action Button - X Meditate - Circle Inventory - Start --->Puzzle Kombat Controls Move Puzzle Pieces - Left Analog Stick Super Move - Square Turn Piece Counter Clockwise - X Turn Piece Clockwise - Circle --->Kombat Chess Controls Move Cursor/Move Fighter - Left Analog Stick Move Camera/Not Used - Right Analog Stick Attack 1/Not Used - Square Attack 2/Not Used - Triangle Attack 3/Accept or Select - X Attack 4/Cancel - Circle Block/Zoom In - R2 Change Style/Spell Menu - L1 Not Used/Reset Camera - R1 ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ |Xbox Controls| ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ --->Arcade Mode Controls Walk Forward - Directional Button Right Walk Backward - Directional Button Left Walk Out - Directional Button Up Walk In - Directional Button Down Jump Forward - Directional Buttons Up and Right Jump Backward - Directional Buttons Up and Left Attack 1 - X Attack 2 - Y Attack 3 - A Attack 4 - B Throw - Black Button Grab Weapon - White Button Block - Right Trigger Change Fighting Style - Left Trigger Pause - Start --->Konquest Controls Move Shujinko - Left Analog Stick Rotate Camera - Right Analog Stick Attack - X Center Camera - Y Action Button - A Meditate - B Inventory - Start --->Puzzle Kombat Controls Move Puzzle Pieces - Left Analog Stick Super Move - X Turn Piece Counter Clockwise - A Turn Piece Clockwise - B --->Kombat Chess Controls/Fighting Board Move Cursor/Move Fighter - Left Analog Stick Not Used/Move Camera - Right Analog Stick Attack 1/Not Used - X Attack 2/Not Used - Y Attack 3/Accept or Select - A Attack 4/Cancel - B Block/Zoom In - Right Trigger Change Style/Spell Menu - Left Trigger Not Used/Reset Camera - Black Button ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- V. Basic Weapon and Hand-to-Hand Moves ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Mortal Kombat: Deception uses the Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance engine; it is virtually unchanged. The three fighting styles return with each character having two hand-to-hand styles as well as one weapon style. These hand-to-hand styles have around 25-30 moves each with the weapon styles having 15-20 moves. Every move in the different fighting styles is different. Along with having its own unique set of moves, they have their own unique set of combos as well. As stated above, weapons return from Deadly Alliance. When a player takes out his/her weapon, their fighting style changes to suit the weapon they are wielding; these weapons also have their own unique set of moves. A new feature in Mortal Kombat: Deception is the inclusion of stage-specific weapons. These weapons can be just lying about or be in very hard to reach areas. When picked up, your character will drop the stage weapon if: you change fighting styles, do a special move, or get hit. It is this way because these weapons inflict much more damage than your regular weapons. Stage specific weapons should be picked up with caution as they are much bigger and slower; they are also placed near Death Traps enticing the player to tread close. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- VI. Fighting Style Explanation ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- As stated above, each character in Mortal Kombat: Deception has two hand-to-hand fighting styles along with one weapon style; these fighting styles can be changed at will throughout the course of a match. These fighting styles allow players to come up with an almost infinite number of combo possibilities. A combo can be started in one style, then finished off in another. Some of the fighting styles new to MK: Deception are: Silate, Hua Chuan, Choy Lee Fut, Ying Yeung, Val Tudo, and Choujaio, as well as a number of other new styles mixed in with recycled ones from Deadly Alliance. As in every other Mortal Kombat, (except 1 and 2) a number and a percentage pops out of the corner of the screen. This number displays how many hits the combo was, and the total amount of damage, in percentage, that was done. When the Change Style button is pressed, the character cycles through his/her three fighting styles. For example, Mileena has the Ying Yeung and Mian Chuan hand-to-hand fighting styles. She starts out in the Ying Yeung style, and when the button is pressed, she switches to the Mian Chuan style. If the button is pressed a third time, she switches to her weapon style, the Sai. These button presses are the same for every character in the game. It may take some players a little while to get used to this control setup if they are unfamiliar with MK: Deadly Alliance, but that is what Practice Mode is for. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ |VII. Modes of Play| ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ ~-~-~-~-~ |Kombat:| "Classic Mortal Kombat fighting." ~-~-~-~-~ In Arcade, the player faces off against CPU players of varying difficulty. Along the way, they earn kurrency to be spent in the Krypt. After completing the Arcade Mode, you unlock that character's ending. Versus Mode allows the player fight a friend which. Practice Mode is what it sounds like; it allows the player to practice his/her moves to their hearts content. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ |Chess Kombat:| "The perfect blend of classic chess and Mortal Kombat." ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ This "mini-game" is much akin to the old PC classic, Archon. It has you picking 5 characters, which represent pieces on the chess board. These pieces are: Leader, Champion, Sorcerer, Shifter, and Grunt. I will go into more detail in the "Chess Kombat Strategy" section. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- |Puzzle Kombat:| "A deadly puzzle game, Mortal Kombat style." ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- This "mini-game" is much akin to the old Capcom Super Puzzle Fighter series on the original PlayStation. It comes complete with deformed characters battling it out on the bottom of the screen. You have to choose one character to represent yourself. Only six are selectable at first. The remaining six must be unlocked. I will go more into detail in the "Puzzle Kombat Strategy" section of this FAQ. ~-~-~-~-~-~ |Konquest:| "Explore the MK universe in this single player mode." ~-~-~-~-~-~ This is the single-player mode of Mortal Kombat: Deception. It has the player following a young man named, Shujinko. It chronicles his quest as he grows, learns many of the fighting arts, and eventually becomes an old man. This is where the meat of the unlockables are hidden. I will go into more detail in the "Konquest Walkthrough and Unlockables Section." ~-~-~-~-~-~- |Xbox Live:| "Test your MK skills against other players on Xbox Live." ~-~-~-~-~-~- This is where you can long online and face anybody at any time throughout the world. If you have PlayStation 2, it will say something different in this area. ~-~-~-~-~-~- |The Krypt:| "Unlock hundreds of items with your MK kurrency." ~-~-~-~-~-~- The Krypt is back from Deadly Alliance albeit with less koffins. That may be a good thing however, as there are better unlockables this time around. Unlike Deadly Alliance however, some koffins require keys to be opened. These keys must be recovered in the Konquest Mode. The Krypt section of this FAQ will explain this. ~-~-~-~-~- |Kontent:| "View movies, images and other unlocked items you've ~-~-~-~-~- earned. Just like in Deadly Alliance, the Kontent section is where most of what you have unlocked in the Krypt is stored. It has everything from characters, to arenas, to endings, to movies, a soundtrack, and even a playable Area 51 demo! ~-~-~-~-~-~ |Profiles:| "Create, view or delete a profile." ~-~-~-~-~-~ Also, like in Deadly Alliance, the player is encouraged to create his/her own profile with a unique password. Creating a profile allows you to save kurrency to later be spent in the Krypt. Remember to load your profile before you engage in Mortal Kombat. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ |Game Options:| "Change settings for game rules, sounds and other ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ options. The options are exactly what they sound like. They allow the player to toggle many things on/off, increase/decrease certain sound effects, determine the amount of rounds to win, turn Death Traps on/off, and finally, it allows you to configure your button configuration. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- |VIII. Arena Descriptions and Death Traps| ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- All of the arenas featured in Mortal Kombat: Deception are fully interactive, meaning you can smash your opponent through walls, ceilings, etc. This section will familiarize you with every arena and the nuances that make it unique. I will start out with every arena's "story" and its physical description. I will then go into detail explaining the various points throughout the arena in which you can interact. Also, almost every arena in Deception has Death Traps and level-specific weapons associated with them. In this section, I will also detail where the Death Traps are located along with descriptions of them. Following the Death Trap locations will be the level-specific weapon locations. >>>>>>>>>>>> Beetle Lair: <<<<<<<<<<<< Arena Description: ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- The Beetle Lair has the fighters starting out in what appears to be the upstairs of some ancient temple. There are 2 stone pillars and huge glass windows which cast light into the fighting area. *INTERACTIVITY 1* These pillars can be destroyed either by you or your opponent. Just walking up to them and punching/kicking them will break them. It is much more fun to hit your opponent into them however; your opponent does not suffer additional damage from this. There are many little beetles scuttling around on the floor just waiting to be squished. There are other red windows on the sides of this arena overlooking the lair itself. There are also many doors that appear to go down to the lair too; all of these doors and some windows are adorned with a spider symbol. Directly to the characters' left is a massive red pane of glass with the spider symbol on it. *INTERACTIVITY 2* This humongous red pane of glass can be broken just like the pillars. You can either break it yourself, or knock your opponent into it shattering it into millions of pieces. In the bottom two corners of this arena are huge pots of fire with skeleton warriors etched into the stone beside them. On the same wall with the pots of fire, is a suspiciously bare looking wall. *INTERACTIVITY 3* You can actually hit your opponent through this wall making them land far, far below into the actual beetle lair itself. Your character proceeds to jump down after them. You land onto the hard stone below. You are now fighting in a massive room with a very high ceiling. Behind where you land are massive wooden doors adorned with that same spider symbol; there are big pieces of rock/brick that looks to have crumbled away next to the doors. To the left and right of the wooden doors are huge pillars with spiders carved into them. On the left and right side walls, there are more pillars and more red panes of glass. To the left of where you land, there is a huge red flag adorned with the Mortal Kombat Dragon Symbol. Death Traps and Level-Specific Weapons: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- *DEATH TRAP* There is no Death Trap associated with the Beetle Lair arena. *LEVEL-SPECIFIC WEAPON* This arena's weapon is know as the Thoraxe. It is long with that same spider symbol at the top made out of steel. The spider's legs jut out and look very sharp. The Thoraxe is located just to the left of where you fall after being hit through that wall. The Thoraxe is slow, but does massive damage if used properly. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Slaughterhouse: <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Arena Description: ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- In this arena, you actually start above the slaughterhouse portion; the actual slaughterhouse is below where the fighters stand. To the left of you and your opponent, is a huge statue of a skull with blood gushing out of its mouth down to the "basement." You start off in a fairly sized fighting area; it looks as if you are fighting in an ancient temple, as there are many openings around you with which various temples can be seen on either side. Behind both of you is an entrance that leads to the slaughterhouse portion of this arena. You fight on what looks to be a decaying and withering wooden floor. *INTERACTIVITY* If you knock your opponent into the air in the right spot, they will break through the floor, and fall straight into the slaughterhouse. You then land on the lower level of this arena. To the left of where you fall, are huge gears that are apparently making the spiked columns rotate. These gears look to be surrounded by a pool of blood with a steady stream falling from the ceiling (from the skull with the blood gushing from its mouth.) There are many stone passageways on either side of this area as well. In one corner of this area are the rotating spike columns. If you or your opponent are hit into this contraption a Death Trap occurs, which is detailed below. Death Traps and Level-Specific Weapons: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- *DEATH TRAP* In one corner of this area are two rotating spike columns. They rotate very fast, and when hit into it, you or your opponent stop the blades from spinning. You are however, stuck in between the two massive structures. As the columns pick up speed, you are completely torn apart with blood and meaty chunks of flesh that are shot at the wall behind these spiked columns. *LEVEL-SPECIFIC WEAPON* This arena's weapon is called the Cleaver. It is found VERY close to the spinning spike columns, so use extreme caution when attempting to pick it up. If you are successful, it can be very helpful in knocking your opponent into the blades. >>>>>>>>>>> Sky Temple: <<<<<<<<<<< Arena Description: ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- The Sky Temple is set atop a VERY tall building. It is raining and lightning in this arena with clouds above the fighting area circling very fast. Around the four corners of the temple, are wooden areas containing goblets of fire. The four sides of the temple have wooden fencing surround them. *INTERACTIVITY* Any of the four wooden fencings can be broken if you or your opponent hits one another through one when you are close. If hit through, you will fall a ways before hitting a shingled awning creating a huge dent. You will then fall farther until you land on another level of the Sky Temple. This level is almost identical to the level you started on with the four corners, with the goblets and so on. Wooden fencing only surrounds three sides of this level. If hit through this wooden fencing again, a Death Trap occurs, which is detailed below. Death Traps and Level-Specific Weapons: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- *DEATH TRAP* On the second level of the Sky Temple (after having been knocked off the first) you can again be knocked through the wooden fencing. If this happens, your character falls a VERY long way down screaming all the way. About halfway down, the camera switches to an "on the ground" view, so you can see the player falling from below. When they land on the hard concrete, they explode into a mess of blood and bones. For added effect, their decapitated head smashes into the camera, ala Mortal Kombat 4. *LEVEL-SPECIFIC WEAPON* This arena's weapon is called the War Hammer. It is very much akin to Raiden's weapon of Mortal Kombat 4. It is located in between the two kombatants on the very first level of the Sky Temple. It is easily visible because of the green square surrounding it. The War Hammer can cause massive damage if a hit is connected with the opponent. It can also be used as an easier way to knock your opponent to the second level of the Sky Temple. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Yin Yang Island: <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Arena Description: ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- You start off fighting in this arena on a small sandy island. Very happy Hawaiian music is playing in the background. The water is clear blue, and other little islands can be seen in the distance; fish even jump out of the water at times. Rock formations jut out of the clear water, and a yacht bobs in the water behind the island. Directly to the left of where you start, is a wooden structure holding a wooden replica of the Mortal Kombat Dragon Symbol. On the island you fight on are many palm trees and stone statues. *INTERACTIVITY 1* These stone statues can be broken. You can walk up to them and punch/kick them, or you can hit your opponent into them; they will shatter upon impact, but no extra damage occurs. *INTERACTIVTY 2* The palm trees littering the arena can cause a humorous animation to occur. If you hit your opponent against a palm tree, they will slide down onto their butts only to have a coconut (or skull) fall on their head causing them much confusion. This sunny facade is then overshadowed by the other form of this arena; yep, this stage has two forms. On the one side, you have the happy, sunny feeling, then at random times, the stage flips to its evil side. The happy music is replaced by a dark tone, and the palm trees turn into snake heads that try to bite you as you fight. It is now dark and raining here also. The level functions the same except for those few cosmetic changes. The edges of the arena can be hazardous to your health. The Death Trap is described below. Death Traps and Level-Specific Weapons: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- *DEATH TRAP* If you get your opponent close enough to a certain side of the island, you can hit them into the water. After in the water, they are eaten by piranhas; all that is left of them are bloody chunks and blood red water. *LEVEL-SPECIFIC WEAPON* There is no Level-Specific Weapon associated with the Ying Yang Island arena. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Chamber of Artifacts: <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Arena Description: ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- The Chamber of Artifacts is made almost entirely of glass. You begin the fight battling on interconnected panes of glass. In the middle of the arena is a sword inside a spinning green emerald. *INTERACTIVITY 1* This spinning emerald can be broken allowing the sword to be used against your opponent. Just hit or knock your opponent into the emerald and it will shatter allowing your access to Lungchuan Dao sword. To the left of the starting area are two double doors with tarps with Asian symbols on them. All throughout this circular arena's walls are artifacts collected by the Black Dragon. There are also windows allowing light to spill in, and stairs leading up to another level. The glass you are fighting on can crack and eventually break. *INTERACTIVITY 2* If you or your opponent are hit onto the same pane of glass one or two times, it will eventually break allowing you access to the bottom portion of this arena. The bottom portion of the Chamber of Artifacts looks similar to the upper portion. There is now a massive pillar in the middle of the fighting area with Asian symbols on it. Below these panes of glass that you still fight are, are massive gears moving around. There are torches and windows on the wall as well as more artifacts and Asian writings. The glass above you can still be broken allowing for: *INTERACTIVITY 3* When fighting on the bottom portion, you can uppercut your opponent sending them flying through one pane of glass and then falling back down through a second pane of glass. Once you are on the bottom portion, there is no way of getting back up to the top area. Death Traps and Level-Specific Weapons: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- *DEATH TRAP* There is no Death Trap associated with the Chamber of Artifacts Arena. *LEVEL-SPECIFIC WEAPON* This arena's Level-Specific Weapon is called the Lungchuan Dao. It is a sword very reminiscent of Liu Kang's sword from Mortal Kombat 4. It is small and fast and can inflict small amounts of damage in a short amount of time if used properly. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Nethership Interior: >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Arena Description: ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- You may remember the arena known as the Nethership from Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. You may also remember that you could only fight on the deck of the ship. In Deception, however, you fight below deck, in the belly of the ship. The two fighters start out on a ledge above the very bottom of the ship. Behind each fighter is a map on the wall, apparently to help the sailors of the ship. To the left sides of the fighters are glass windows overlooking the sea outside. *INTERACTIVITY 1* These glass windows can shatter if you or your opponent get knocked into them. Nothing more can happen with these windows, other than them breaking and spraying glass shards everywhere; it is more for effect than anything. To the right of the fighters is a wooden fence that is blocking off the very bottom of the Netherbelly, which affords the fighters a much larger area in which to do battle. *INTERACTIVITY 2* If you get knocked through this wooden fence, you will fall down and into a set of wooden barrels splintering them, and landing hard on your back. You will now be on the bottom of the Netherbelly. The bottom of the Netherbelly is a much longer and wider area in which to battle. In the very middle of this space, on the ground, is the Mortal Kombat Dragon Symbol. On the sides are many braziers with raging flames in them. There are also wooden statues of dragons, and other mythical sea creatures jutting out from just under the ceiling. There is ancient writing on the walls of this area as well. In the middle of this fighting area are corpses hanging from the ceiling with ropes around their necks. *INTERACTIVITY 3* These bodies hanging from the ceiling can be knocked into the opponent to cause some damage. When they are touched they swing back and forth limply hitting anyone in their way. Death Traps and Level-Specific Weapons: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- *DEATH TRAP* There is no Death Trap associated with the Netherbelly arena. *LEVEL-SPECIFIC WEAPON* There is no known level-specific weapon associated with the Netherbelly arena. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Hell's Foundry: >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Arena Description: ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Hell's Foundry is a gigantic warehouse type structure. You start on a platform overlooking the many giant steel presses around you. You fight on marble floor surrounded on all sides by enormous presses. These presses come up and down on hot coal making it very loud in this arena. Above you are scattered walkways which are interrupted by bursts of hot, orange embers that fall over them. The platform you begin kombat on is surrounded on three sides by steel fencing. The one side not surrounded can lead to: *INTERACTIVITY 1* If you hit your opponent near the side of the platform with no steel fencing, they will splat against the wall and fall to the lower portion of Hell's Foundry. Once in the lower area of Hell's Foundry, you are given a close up look at the giant steel presses in action. You land on red marble floor surrounded on two sides by the presses. There are also 4 pillars littered throughout this area of the arena. If one gets too close to a giant press, you can be knocked onto it allowing for the Death Trap to occur. Death Traps and Level-Specific Weapons: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- *DEATH TRAP* All throughout the bottom portion of the Foundry, are gigantic steel presses. If knocked under one of them, you or your opponent will immediately start to burn, and try to crawl out on their hands and knees. Before they knew what hit them, one of the giant presses comes down hard on top of them, reducing them to a bloody smear on the bottom of the steel. *LEVEL-SPECIFIC WEAPON* There is no Level-Specific Weapon associated with the Hell's Foundry arena. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Falling Cliffs: <<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Arena Description: ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- The Falling Cliffs level is unique in that it is constantly changing shape. You fight on a circular piece of land very high off the ground. The catch is, the outer edges continue to break away as the two characters fight. You begin the fight on a piece of land with smoke "erupting" from its surface. Around the outer edges of this circular piece of land are flags with Asian symbols adorning them; two of these flags have decaying bodies attached to their poles. As you look around you will see numerous mountains rising up in the distance as well as smoking volcanoes. There area also a few temples carved into the sides of these mountains with long stairs leading up to their entrances much like the first Mortal Kombat film. If you are caught standing on the outer edge of this arena, you will fall to your death, which is described below. Death Traps and Level-Specific Weapons: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- *DEATH TRAP* If you are caught on the outer edge of this arena, and it breaks away, you will lose balance and plummet to your death. You fall a long way and eventually land on a very sharp, very thick stalagmite/rock formation. You or your opponent land on this with a sickening plop all the while blood pours from their body; the defeated opponent briefly tries to remove himself/herself from the spike but fails. *LEVEL-SPECIFIC WEAPON* There is no Level-Specific Weapon associated with the Falling Cliffs arena. >>>>>>>>>>>> Dark Prison: <<<<<<<<<<<< Arena Description: ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- The Dark Prison has the kombatants starting out on a platform overlooking the prison courtyard; it also looks to serve as the shower for the inmates as there are shower heads sprinkling water all over the place. To the left and right of the fighters are cell doors leading to even more cells for incarcerated criminals. To the right of the characters, is a metal fence. *INTERACTIVITY 1* If knocked into this fence, you will be thrown from the shower area to the prison courtyard below; you proceed to land hard on your head/neck area. In the middle of this courtyard is the Mortal Kombat Dragon Symbol. There are many, many cells containing past Mortal Kombat characters yelling for your attention. The likes of Stryker, Kintaro, Kung Lao, MoKap, Kano, Reptile, Kitana, Kai, Shang Tsung, Shinnok, Johnny Cage, Goro, Fujin etc are held in these cells. *INTERACTIVITY 2* If you or your opponent come too close to any of these cells, the character imprisoned will grab you allowing your opponent an extra hit or two. This will cause no damage if you are grabbed and not attacked by your foe, however. Huge, rusty metal hooks also dangle down close to the arena floor. There is a Death Trap waiting silently in the corner of this arena which is detailed below. Death Traps and Level-Specific Weapons: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- *DEATH TRAP* In one corner of the arena is a little indentation with two huge walls of spikes on either side. If knocked into that portion of the wall, your character will see these two walls of spikes come sliding towards them, crushing them in between. *LEVEL-SPECIFIC WEAPON* There is no Level-Specific Weapon associated with the Dark Prison arena. >>>>>>>>>>>> Lower Mines: <<<<<<<<<<<< Arena Description: ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- The Lower Mines are pretty much exactly what they sound like. You start the fight underground in what resembles a cave/mine. To the kombatants' left, is a huge mechanical dragon head with rows upon rows of sharp teeth; it's mouth opens and closes as the fighters battle it out. A Death Trap occurs if your opponent is knocked into this mechanical head which will be detailed below. To the left and right of the dragon head are wooden structures used to help the miners; numerous walkways can be seen going up and down the walls. To the fighters' left, is a wooden fence. *INTERACTIVITY 1* If you or your opponent are knocked into this fence, it breaks and you fall to the lower portion of the mines. This area of the mines resembles the upper area except there are 2 more Death Traps down here. Directly behind the fighter who took the fall is a gigantic steel rock crusher; you can be knocked into this for a very gruesome Death Trap which is detailed below. The area you fight in is surrounded by a small black fence, behind which a massive furnace can be seen. Behind the character who jumps down after the other was hit through the fence is a steep drop-off to a fire pit. Behind this fire pit are conveyor belts moving rocks to and from eventually depositing them into this fire pit. Once again, this fire pit is a Death Trap which will be detailed below. Death Traps and Level-Specific Weapons: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- *DEATH TRAPS* There are actually three Death Traps associated with this arena. They will be numbered and described below: 1. The first Death Trap is located near the starting point of the arena. It is a giant mechanical dragon head with sharp teeth. Once you hit your opponent onto/into it, they land half inside of its mouth, and half outside its mouth. The dragon head then chomps down on the fallen foe, cutting them in half leaving only their legs. 2. The gigantic rock crusher Death Trap is located behind the fighters when they are knocked through the broken wooden fence. If knocked into this massive amount of steel, the opponent is "eaten" by this structure. It continues to roll further maiming the hapless victim who was knocked into it; blood and bones fly as they are continually mauled. 3. The third Death Trap is located behind the fighter who was not knocked through the wooden fence; it is a giant pit of fire. When knocked into this pit, you or your opponent screams as they are incinerated upon impact. A burst of fire erupts from the pit as the victim hits the fire/lava. *LEVEL-SPECIFIC WEAPON* There is no Level-Specific Weapon associated with the Lower Mines arena. <<<<<<<< The Pit: >>>>>>>> Arena Description: ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- The Pit makes its return from Mortal Kombat 1. You fight on a huge square shaped area which is surrounded on all sides by rows upon rows of sharp spikes. There are mountains on all sides of this fighting area as well as two bridges to the left and right of The Pit. These bridges are held up by massive pillars with spikes shooting out them. The moon is shining brightly in the background, and paying homage to Mortal Kombat 1, there is the shadow of a witch flying past the moon on her broomstick. Once knocked off the platform in which you start, you fall into the Death Trap which is detailed below. Death Traps and Level-Specific Weapons: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- *DEATH TRAP* Once knocked off the side of the fighting arena, you plummet towards a bed of very sharp steel spikes. Once impaled, the kombatant screams and tries to pry himself/herself loose all the while blood is pouring from their body. *LEVEL-SPECIFIC WEAPON* There is no Level-Specific Weapon associated with The Pit arena. >>>>>>>>>> Dead Pool: <<<<<<<<<< Arena Description: ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- The Dead Pool also makes a return to Mortal Kombat, this time from MKII. You are once again fighting on a square platform surrounded on all sides by green acid. There is a Mortal Kombat Dragon Symbol on the floor in the middle of this square. There are two cement doors on either side of this arena. In three of the corners are statues of warriors. The trademark chains with hooks litter this arena as well. In one of the corners is a balcony of sorts overlooking the fighting area. The Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat II watches the battle silently from this balcony. Once you are knocked into this acid a Death Trap occurs which is detailed below. Death Traps and Level-Specific Weapons: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- *DEATH TRAP* Once knocked into the lava flowing around this arena, the fighter is instantly "eaten" alive by this acid, reducing them to just their skeleton in a matter of seconds. The trademark "Agua" sound byte is heard after this occurs. *LEVEL-SPECIFIC WEAPON* There is no Level-Specific Weapon associated with Dead Pool arena. <<<<<<<<<<<<<< Living Forest: >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Arena Description: ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- The Living Forest is again one of the returning fighting arenas from Mortal Kombat II. This time you are fighting on a very grassy piece of land in the middle of a forest. In classic MKII fashion, the trees all have eyes, noses, and mouths. Their expressions are fixed and do not move or make noise like Mortal Kombat II; they are still cool to look at however. There is a small river/moat flowing around the square fighting area which is just for effect. *DEATH TRAP* There is no Death Trap associated with the Living Forest arena. *LEVEL-SPECIFIC WEAPON* There is no Level-Specific Weapon associated with the Living Forest arena. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ |IX. Individual Character Stories/Stats and Moves/Fatalities| ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ The Character Select Screen in Mortal Kombat: Deception is again different, and has not been seen in any other MK thus far. It is 8x3, with the character portraits situated toward the bottom of the screen. When a character's picture is highlighted a 3-D render of them is displayed on either the left or right side of the screen depending on if you are Player 1 or Player 2. In single player, each character's stats are displayed on the right hand side of the screen. The characters from left to right are: -Jade -Kenshi -Scorpion -Mileena -Baraka -Sub-Zero -Sindel -Havik -Raiden -Li Mei -Kabal -Ermac -Nightwolf -BoRaiCho -NoobSmoke -Tanya -Shujinko -Hotaru -Ashrah -Dairou -Kobra -Darrius -Kira -Liu Kang I will list each character's Special Moves, their two hand-to- hand fighting style move sets, and their weapon move sets. Regular kombos will also be contained in this section. I will also list the character's stats, story, ending, Fatalities and Hari Kiris in very good detail in this section as well. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- |Performing a Fatality:| ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- At the end of a best 2 out of 3 rounds match, the announcer will scream, "Finish Him!" It is now time to enter a Fatality button sequence. You can press the Change Style button to enter into Fatality "mode," or you can input the command without the Fatality style locked in. Make sure you are holding Block when right up next to an opponent, so as not to accidentally hit them when trying to perform a Fatality. Each character has two Fatalities along with their own Hari Kari move. The Hari Kari move is a Suicideality, which can be used so your opponent cannot gain the satisfaction of performing a Fatality on you. Hari Kiris DO NOT need to be performed at a certain distance from your opponent; they can be done anywhere onscreen. Unlike in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, MK:D requires you to be a certain distance from your fallen opponent when inputting the button sequences for a specific Fatality. These distances are pretty specific and are: >Close: You need to be right next to your opponent, and not a step away. >Sweep: You need to be within sweep distance of your opponent as in you need to be able to sweep them from where you are standing. >Far: You need to be at least one jump away from your opponent. The best way to get "Far" is to get close to them and jump back once or twice depending on which character you are. *NOTE* I will list the initial 12 selectable characters in the order they appear on the Select Screen. Following the first 12 characters will be the remaining 12, also appearing in the order they are on the Select Screen. *NOTE* +-~-~-~-~-+ |Scorpion:| +-~-~-~-~-+ Stats: Origin: Earthrealm Alignment: Neutral Allies: None Foes: Quan Chi, Drahmin, Moloch, Sub-Zero Difficulty: 2 Fighting Styles: Hapkido Moi Fah Mugai Ryu >Throw Description: Scorpion bends you over, and proceeds to punch his adversary two times in the stomach. After those two punches, Scorpion knees you in the chest sending his opponent flipping through the air landing hard on their back. Description: Scorpion looks very much like he did in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. His mouth guard more closely resembles the one worn in Mortal Kombat 4 however. He still has two swords on his back and the infamous orangish/yellow ninja attire. Scorpion had some metal knee pads in Deadly Alliance; he now has pieces of armor all throughout his costume. His arms are bare, and he has metal arm guards and gloves; on his back are the hilts for two swords. He wears dark colored pants, with metal knee pads. His boots are very samurai-like in that they look like sandals; he wears black socks with them however. Alternate Costume: Scorpion's alternate costume is a remake of his Mortal Kombat 4 outfit. He wears the same blue tights on his chest and legs; his head is also covered in it. His mouth guard resembles that of a skull and his eyes are completely white. He wears the trademark yellow vest looking thing over blue tights. His arms are bare and he wears wrist guards and gloves on his hands. He wears a yellow belt with a skull belt buckle. He wears skin tight tights on his legs over blue samurai shoes with yellow/gold shin guards. The back of his costume is blue and yellow, and he has his coiled spear on the left side of his belt. Story: In his haste to confront his nemesis, Quan Chi, he was ambushed by two Oni and cast into a powerful soulnado. He would surely have been torn apart by the souls trapped there had he not managed to escape into the Void. It was in this place that he first set eyes on the fabled Elder Gods. She then proceeds to flip them into the air, making them land hard on their back once grounded. It looks like Sonya's infamous Leg Grab, except Mileena gets some serious hang time. Description: Mileena does not look drastically different in this iteration of the series. She does however, show much more skin than in the past. She has her long, dark hair pulled behind her head in a ponytail with a gold headband. Starting from her ears, and ending at her mouth, is a pink gypsy-like mouth guard, hiding her nose, and mouth from everyone; all that is visible are her cold, dead, eyes. The upper part of her costume is green and is worn almost in a triangle over her chest, revealing much of it. This top portion runs all the way down to her arms, where it turns pink and baggy. She has a gold "belt" of sorts running across her chest. Below that is a brown belt tied into a knot. Under that belt are what appear to be a pair of pink and black underwear. Mileena's legs are bare and she fights on dark boots. Alternate Costume: Once again Mileena wears the pink mouth guard that covers everything from the tip of the nose down. Her dark black hair is let down and is about shoulder length. Her main outfit resembles a bikini of sorts. It is pink with black trim and runs from her nether region all the way up across her chest and behind her neck. This outfit is VERY revealing; coming off the left and right side of her "bikini" are pink and black tassels that flow smoothly as she fights. Her upper forearms are adorned with pink and black arm guards that end at the elbow. She has gold bracelets on both her wrists as well. Her legs are bare except for pink and black leg guards that begin at the upper thigh and run down to her shins. On each knee cap are gold objects. She fights on pink boots, with a black trim/underside. Story: Created by the sorcerer Shang Tsung, Mileena has at last fulfilled her destiny as Kitana's successor by posing as the former princess. She misleads Kitana's military forces in an attempt to give the Dragon King the time he needs to complete his plans. Only Baraka knows the truth behind her deception. "I am a creation of sorcery, the hybrid of a Tarkatan warrior and the princess of Edenia. My purpose was to eventually replace my...sister... Kitana, from whom I was cloned. Kitana regained her memories, however, and uncovered the plot to supplant her. With the sais sticking out, and blood shooting everywhere, Mileena lets out a few moans as she falls face first to the ground in a pool of her own blood. Ending: Because it is widely believed that Princess Kitana had slain her many years ago, none were suspicious of the veil Mileena wore to conceal her Tarkatan features. It was not difficult for her to assume the identity of the princess and take control of her alliance. To further conceal her deception, Mileena gave command of the armies to Bo'Rai Cho and instructed him to lead the attack against Baraka's diversionary forces. Baraka's militia had failed to divert the enemy, and to her surprise, was decimated by Bo'Rai Cho's forces. She then realized that she was in control of the most powerful military force in Outworld and Edenia combined... She had finally achieved her true purpose, her destiny. Mileena could not continue her charade indefinitely-not as long as Baraka knew the truth. She ambushed him in the ancient Beetle Lair and fed him to a swarm of flesh-eating insects. Before they know what hit them Baraka jumps into the air with his knee still firmly planted in the small of their back. They both hit the ground hard as Baraka does a reverse somersault away from his foe. Description: Baraka looks just as ugly as he did the last time we saw him (Mortal Kombat Gold). He has the same pointy ears, the same bald head, the same long, sharp teeth and the same massive blades protruding from his forearms. He wears what resembles a catcher's overthrow, with what looks like a spinal cord acting as suspenders of sorts. On the back of his upper attire, is a mysterious symbol in yellow/gold (the symbol of his race perhaps?). Part of this attire has clothing that flaps down in front of his legs. He wears baggy red pants along with metal knee pads. He also fights on silver metal boots. Alternate Costume: Baraka is still ugly, still has the same pointy teeth, but his bald head has little spikes protruding from the back. He wears a sliver and red "shirt" with the sleeves cut off. On his shoulders are silver shoulder guards that attach to his upper forearm. He wears a silver and red belt with a shiny generic belt buckle. A little black and silver flap hangs between his legs and moves about as he fights; the back of the flap has red and silver symbols adorning it. He wears black pants over silver and black shoes; above his shoes are silver/metal shin guards that run up to his knee caps. Story: Baraka's Tarkatan race is a mutated hybrid of Netherrealm and Outworld species. A loyal warrior, Baraka faithfully serves his new master, the dragon king, by preoccupying Outworld opposition with his Tarkatan hordes, the backbone of the Dragon King's terrifying army. On his right shoulder is another device presumably powering his respirator; it also has an antenna sticking out. He wears baggy light brown colored pants with silver and black kneepads. He wears silver steel-toed boots. Alternate Costume: Kabal's alternate costume reminds me of Voldo from Soul Calibur for some reason. Anyway, his mask is a bit redone looking more like Noob's mask. It is black and silver with various protrusions all throughout the top. Kabal still has his trademark ponytail stick out the back. He wears a thick silver "collar" of sorts around his neck. On his chest are the black and silver straps of the "backpack" he wears on his back. Underneath these straps is a light brown sleeveless shirt. His arms are bare except for an upper forearm guard and black gloves. He still has that weird machine-type thing on his back, complete with lit buttons and an antenna. His shirt comes all the way down in front of his legs and flows there as he fights. He wears dark brown pants with small pouches sewn into the sides over black and silver boots; he also wears silver and black shin guards that come up to his knees. As his foe falls back to Earth, Ermac punches them in a downward motion, causing them to hit the ground hard face first. Description: Ermac resembles more of a Scorpion than a Sub-Zero in this game. You can still tell he is a ninja, just not as easily as before (damn palette swaps!). Ermac wears a black wrap around his head and face; it covers his entire head, and his mouth and nose. Only his eyes are showing. In the middle of this wrap is a metal pin. He wears an all red long-sleeved karate gi. He then wears a large vest over his red uniform. He wears more wrap around his forearms and black gloves. A piece of the vest hangs down around his thighs; his belt buckle is interlocking. His pants are red and baggy and he wears gold and black boots; there is a metal portion that runs from the middle of the boot to his knee where there is a jewel of some sort. Alternate Costume: As with his regular costume, Ermac wears a black "wrap" around the top of his head with a red symbol in the middle of it; his eyes glowing a deep white. He also wears a black mouth guard that covers his nose and everything else down; this "guard" extends to his neck as well, completely covering it. He wears what seem like red and black "suspenders" that flow all the way down in front of his legs. His arms are bare except for black wrist guards and black gloves. He wears a colorful belt with an exotic buckle. His pants are red and Ermac wears silver and black knee guards over silver and black boots; his shin guards are silver and black as well. Story: "We are Ermac. We are the fusion of the souls of dead warriors, created by Shao Kahn to obey him without question. Ending: In an outer chamber of the Dragon King's throne room. Ermac did battle with Liu Kang's enslaved comrades. Ermac was more that a match for the five warriors, but their defeat was not his objective. Liu Kang materialized and, one by one, freed their souls while Ermac occupied the rest. Eventually, all five were awakened from their enchantment and freed from Onaga's control. Ermac was pleased that his warrior skills could for once bring about a noble outcome. He sensed, however, that an ominous force still shaped the destiny of the realms. It was everywhere. He cloud feel influence on Onaga, though the Dragon King was oblivious to its manipulation.
