December 28, 2007 - We all can admit that the Dynasty Warriors series has had its highs and lows over the years. In a series that has spawned more than a dozen games, there's bound to be a few clunkers. But the good news is that through all the clunkers, the Dynasty Warriors core gameplay has remained relatively unchanged. Love it or hate it, the gameplay that we first saw back on the PS2 is still around, and for the most part, people still love it. So, needless to say, you can expect the same sort of action from Dynasty Warriors 6. That being said however, the developers this time around seem to be trying to update the franchise a little more. Strides are being made to include more elements to make the game feel like a bigger part of the current-gen game scene.
The biggest upgrade that fans of the series will notice right away is the overall visual style of the game. While the Dynasty Warriors series has never really been known for its excellence in the visual department, Dynasty Warriors 6 looks to shift this view a little. Character models this time around look a little more detailed and polished than before, and these new visuals really help bring the series into the league of other next-gen titles. A lot of these new visuals might also be the result of a need for the series to really come into it's own as an evolving series. Although Dynasty Warriors has been around for awhile, those who've played two or more entries can't help but feel like the whole thing is just a little static. Hopefully the new and improved visuals will help Dynasty Warriors come into its own, not only as a true current gen title but also as a growing series that has more than one trick up its sleeve.
Dynasty Warriors 6 will sport a more cohesive and customizable battle system. There is a whole new component to battles known as "renbu," which effectively glues attacks together and makes for a more seamless style of combat. The "renbu" system also uses a gauge that allows you to power up your combo attacks and level up towards unlocking more of these combo-style attacks. However, the values in the gauge are not fixed, and the players "renbu" level will fall if they don't use enough combo attacks. This facet of the game adds some depth to an otherwise shallow combat system and looks like it will also add a level of continuity to the game that was previously missing.
One very cool aspect of Dynasty Warriors 6 that will delight fans of Asian history and literature is the story. Of course, the Dynasty Warriors series has never been too much of a trailblazer when it comes to prolific storytelling, but the events of Dynasty Warriors 6 are supposed to be based around the events of the great Chinese epic The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This classic piece of Chinese literature deals with the turbulent years near the close of the Han dynasty. Although the Dynasty Warriors series has attempted to cover the evens of this period before, rumor has it that this latest entry in the series will explore some of the events in the book a little more closely. There's no real word on how this will be achieved however, but I personally am pulling for some specific character development and tighter events in the game. It seems that the combat system is evolving, so I think it is not too far-fetched to expect the storytelling mechanics to as well.
Dynasty Warriors 6 doesn't look like it is going to radically redefine its own classic standard of gameplay. However, it does look like it is going to gently usher it into the current gen of gaming with some much-needed updates to both the graphics and the gameplay. It is no secret that the Dynasty Warriors games have been slammed in the past for sticking too much to the formula and staying a little too static, but hopefully Dynasty Warriors 6 will give us an entirely new experience that will remind everyone why they liked Dynasty Warriors in the first place!
