If you stick with solo play, you'll start off as Point Man, but completing a mission will unlock Fettel as a playable character for that mission. Each character has his own ending. However, if you play co-op, your scores will be tallied at the end of the game to determine which ending you'll see.
There are some multiplayer modes as well. Personally, the mode I enjoyed the most was Soul King. You play as extremely ugly ghosts who must try to kill as many NPC enemies as possible and devour their souls, which basically look like floating skulls. You can also possess these enemies and pilot their bodies around. If you kill another player, however, that player will lose half the souls they've collected. It's a quick way to score larger amounts at once, but comes with the risk that the other player might kill you first and cause you to lose half your hard-earned souls. At the end of each round, the player with the most souls wins.
The other multiplayer modes include Contractions, basically F.E.A.R. 3's version of Gears of War's Horde Mode, and Soul Survivor, in which one player is a ghost that can possess A.I. characters in order to spread the corruption to other players. F***ing Run is by far the most intense, forcing players to blast their way through enemies while a giant wall of Alma-induced fog chases them. Get caught in the fog and it's game over.
F.E.A.R. 3 is a welcome treat, if only for its nerve-grinding atmosphere. The campaign is far too short—with Fettel, you could probably whiz through it in three or four hours—but the multiplayer modes are a lot of fun. The few other flaws the game has are largely forgivable, especially if you thirst for a great horror first-person shooter that you can play with a friend.
