If you get close to death, the game will immediately put you into a quick time event, where you attempt to get your footing as one of the enemies of the game tries to claw or bite you to death. If you manage to regain your footing, you will pull out your knife. And if you can manage to stab the enemy in its weak point enough to get it off you, your life will be recharged to full. This is the only way to die in the game. Each time you are put into the quick time event, it gets harder, but you always have a chance to bounce back.

The game will very frequently ask you to get in and out of your suit to complete missions. Intricate work needs to be done by hand, not by giant robot claw. Of course, this very frequently puts Jim in harm's way. The demo forced Jim to de-ice his suit while a sudden hoard of aliens descended upon him. He had to balance the de-icing with combat in order to survive. At one point, Jim was forced to enter a cavern his suit couldn't enter, and in there he found a giant alien space crab. Jim is kind of an unlucky person, come to think of it.
From my time with the demo, Lost Planet 3 seems so much more fun than Lost Planet 1 and 2. The story is more believable, the controls make more sense, and you really feel for the character as a real human being. I'm actually interested in how Jim ultimately connects to the greater Lost Planet story. Be on the lookout for Lost Planet 3 when it releases in early 2013.
