Tomb Raider may be one of the most previewed games that we have ever covered on this site. We got a look at the game when it was first announced, another when it was first showcased at E3 two years ago, and yet another look at E3 this past year. We’ve covered the story, progression system, new environments, combat, and overall gameplay of the title, and we’ve picked apart the single-player campaign in every way we could. We even took a look at some of the more controversial themes that the story is dealing with and how they have been received by Tomb Raider’s audience in general. So what else is there to know about this upcoming reboot? Well, there’s the multiplayer element, of course.
Every current triple-A title is adding multiplayer it seems, and Tomb Raider is jumping on the bandwagon as well. However, Tomb Raider has always been a traditionally single-player experience, so the team had to get creative when it came to integrating a multiplayer mode.
A while back, it was revealed that you can take control of one of two factions in Tomb Raider’s multiplayer mode, either the Survivors or the Scavengers. The Survivors are essentially a ragtag group of explorers, much like Lara’s friends in the story. The Scavengers, on the other hand, are dangerous and violent natives, much like the foes that Lara will face in the single-player campaign.
One of the multiplayer modes, Rescue, is unlike most of what we have seen in the past. On each map, the Scavengers and the Survivors will be given completely separate goals. One example we saw combined capture the flag and deathmatch-style battles. The Survivors were tasked with collecting medpacks from different areas of the map and leaving them at specific drop points. Meanwhile, the Scavengers were tasked with killing the survivors a certain number of times. The Survivors were far tougher than the Scavengers, with lots of health, and they needed to be executed at close range after being incapacitated. The Scavengers, on the other hand, dropped quickly, but they respawned just as fast. It’s somewhat like Left 4 Dead in that way. Also much like Left 4 Dead, the game forces both teams to play as both sides over the course of a game, making sure to keep things balanced.
However, not every multiplayer mode is an innovation on existing multiplayer formulas. Team Deathmatch is also confirmed to be in the game, and it operates exactly as you would expect it to. Simply get more kills than the opposing team and you’ll win. However, just like Rescue, you are forced to play as both Survivors and Scavengers, but it doesn’t appear as if the sides differ in any particular way.
