The one new character, Decapre, is also a disappointment. As you likely know, her character model is just Cammy with a mask. However, she does play completely different from Cammy. She has a very versatile offensive move-set and very unique ultras that operate completely different from Cammy’s. The big problem, however, is that these moves were just taken from other characters in the game. Her jumping fierce animation, for example, is ripped right from Vega. She kind of feels like a fan-hack rather than a full character made by Capcom.

That’s actually the biggest problem with Ultra Street Fighter IV. It doesn’t feel like Capcom is giving us all that much to play around with. As a 15 dollar expansion pack it’s not so bad. That’s 3 dollars per character and that’s a pretty good rate, considering you are also getting a huge balance update. However, after I tried out the new characters and mechanics I felt like the game was basically just the same thing we have always played before. Sure I’ll probably be changing my main character and the meta game has shifted around a bit, but it’s still Street Fighter IV, the game that came out six years ago in arcades. It breathes some new life into it, and that’s probably for the best as Capcom doesn’t have Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 to pull in the crowds anymore, but there are plenty of new fighting games out there to try.

Ultra Street Fighter IV is undeniably enjoyable. The new mechanics are great, the balance patch is tight, and the new characters are a nice little bonus. However, your enjoyment of the game will hinge largely on how much you like Street Fighter. If you have already moved on to another fighting game, you’ll have some fun with USF4, but you’ll probably go back to your other obsession in a few weeks. If you are a Street Fighter devotee, well you are going to purchase USF4 just to stay tournament current. If you have never played Street Fighter IV before, Ultra Street Fighter IV is certainly the definitive version of the game, but at the same time it’s the end of the game’s lifecycle and I’m not so sure it will stick around much more. All of this adds together to make a well done game that will be appreciated by tragically few people.
