The Protagonists in the Final Fantasy Series, Ranked

From the start, Final Fantasy set itself apart from other early JRPGs like Dragon Quest by putting a stronger spotlight on storytelling. Although the first game used silent, customizable heroes, the series quickly shifted toward fully developed protagonists with distinct personalities, histories, and abilities. Beginning with Final Fantasy II, these characters became just as central to the franchise as the worlds and conflicts they inhabit. With 16 main entries and a 17th on the way, it’s the perfect time to revisit every major protagonist and rank them.

Our ranking looks at each hero’s impact on their game’s story, their character growth, and how well they function in battle. We also considered how effectively they anchor their party. Some characters excel in one area but fall short in another, which ultimately affects where they land on the list.
