5 Mods We Wish For in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PC

Yesterday marked the release of the fan-anticipated sequel to FinalFantasy 7 Remake, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PC. Whenever a new triple-A title makes its way from console to PC many fans are excited for the latest features that come with it. Most games receive better performance and more options for experience customization but the real excitement comes from mods. With the right mod, you can add much more to your experience and create endless replayability. Rebirth’s director, Naoki Hamaguchi begged modders not to inappropriately mod the characters of the game but in all honesty, why stop there? Here are 7 mods we’re hoping for in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Graphic Overhaul

Usually, the first thing to hit a mod scene is some performance fix or reshade preset. Graphic overhauls can pretty much be expected very soon. A good graphics overhaul can completely elevate this already gorgeous game. Fans of raytracing might luckily get a mod that injects raytracing into the game giving it much more realistic lighting. Raytracing has become more and more of a gimmick nowadays and won’t entice everybody but I’m never one to turn down the choice for those who want it.

Graphics overhauls can also work oppositely as well! There could be a mod that reduces the graphic fidelity of this title so much that it might be playable by less capable or older hardware. While the game’s optimization is already pretty good compared to other triple-A titles, it still requires a newer PC build to be experienced at 1080p, 60 frames per second. Maybe you already have a great rig but need that extra boost to achieve 60 or even 120 frames per second, this sort of mod would be perfect for you.

Combat Overhaul

Don’t get me wrong, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has some of the best combat I’ve ever played in a video game but I would be lying if I said I didn’t want to tweak some things. A good combat overhaul adds so much replayability to a game. A mod that alters how the game is balanced and played would be a godsend for those who want more customization. The original Remake title has multiple mods that affect weapon, equipment, and material balancing. These games also lack a hard mode that you can access immediately after booting the game for the first time. Normal difficulty is too easy sometimes and dynamic difficulty just doesn’t quite scratch that itch. Imagine a mod that lets you customize enemy health and damage. Or even something that changes how the ATB system works. The potential is endless.

Outfits

Outfits and other cosmetics can be expected and I think that’s what Mr Hamaguchi was worried about in his quote. I’m not saying that the cosmetics have to be NSFW or offensive but wouldn’t it be awesome to have mods that alter your party’s clothing? Playing the whole game in the swimsuits from the beach chapter could be fun but why stop there? Imagine a mod that swaps the swimsuits and you can run around with Tifa in Barret’s sailor suit. Modders could even mod in character outfits from other games turning Cloud into his Kingdom Hearts design or maybe an outfit from a different Final Fantasy title.

Playable Sephiroth

Let’s be honest, fans love Sephiroth. Luckily, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth allows players to play as the villain in the game’s early hours during Cloud’s retelling of the infamous Nibelheim incident. Sephiroth’s moveset is incredibly fun and fulfills that fantasy of being overpowered. Unfortunately, this is the only time you get to play as him in the entire game. His moveset is surprisingly fleshed out, to the point where some fans wonder if he might be a party member in the third Final Fantasy 7 Remake title. Until then, hopefully, a good modder will be able to find a way to mod him into our party.

Model Swaps

Similar to the outfit mod, model swaps are some of the most underrated types of mods. Social media is full of videos of serious moments in gaming being ruined by a camera panning to reveal the models were swapped to characters like Shrek or Spongebob. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is an incredibly emotional title and it has its funny moments as well. Those funny moments could become hysterical with the right mod, such as replacing Aerith with Micky Mouse, or Sephiroth with Shadow the Hedgehog. In all honesty, I’m most looking forward to these mods once the modding scene gets off the ground. Whatever happens though, it will make an already great game even better.
