Dark Point Games’ Achilles: Legends Untold is the studio’s 2023 action RPG/Soulslike hybrid for PC and 9th-generation consoles. Initially released into Early Access in 2022, the title’s official 1.0 launch on November 2, 2023, would see it also finally arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Dark Point had initially planned on the game releasing for last-gen consoles and the Nintendo Switch as well, though those plans were eventually scrapped. Achilles marks the debut title from Dark Point Games, a Polish studio who are currently set to release an action roguelike follow-up to the game sometime in 2025.
Critical and fan response to Achilles were mostly positive, with both reviewers and players noting that the game’s official 1.0 launch managed to smooth out several of the game’s rough spots present during its Early Access period. Players note that the game’s mixing of Soulslike gameplay with more traditional action RPG elements leads to Achilles being a more approachable experience than many games in the subgenre, along with its Greek mythology-inspired setting helping to keep its story interesting. Though the game has a mixed 67% positive review aggregate score from critics, the Steam user rating for the title currently sits at a respectable 79%.
Achilles: Legends Untold Premise
The story of Achilles: Legends Untold begins with a retelling of the battle between the Achaeans (Homer’s term for Greeks in the Illiad) and the city of Troy, otherwise known as the Trojan War. The greatest of all Greece’s warriors, Achilles, leads his band of mythical soldiers known as Myrmidons directly into the heart of the city, only to fall in battle against Paris of Troy. After a strange limbo-like existence between life and death, Achilles rises from the grave with some divine help, setting out to find a blacksmith who can help point him in the right direction. He eventually comes to learn that he plays an important role in helping the gods stop Phobos from destroying Greece.
Gameplay in Achilles: Legends Untold adheres strongly to the commonly accepted elements of Soulslikes, action RPGs that take inspiration from FromSoftware’s Dark Souls trilogy. Players will fight enemies using precise, methodical combat while managing a stamina meter, deflecting and dodging attacks, and using limited healing resources. Defeating enemies and bosses results in accruing experience in the form of Essence (a replacement for Dark Souls‘ titular Souls currency), which players can accumulate into Skill Points. Any Essence not accumulated into a full Skill Point is lost upon death, but players can return to the site of death to recover lost experience (a process known as “corpse running”).
Notably, Achilles mixes its Soulslike elements with more traditional ARPG gameplay akin to something like Diablo. Enemies are plentiful and fall more easily than they typically would in a Soulslike, giving the game a “hack and slash” feel. Additionally, loot drops are plentiful and color-coded by their rarity and power, with players able to switch builds and playstyles on the fly.
Achilles: Legends Untold Main Characters
Achilles: Legends Untold puts players in control of the titular hero of Greek mythology, beginning the game as Achilles and his Myrmidon army launch their assault against Troy and then taking him on a journey that spans life and death. Along the way, Achilles will come face to face with several other prominent figures from Greek mythology, both human and divine. Additionally, players will overcome several challenges related to fearsome creatures from Grecian folklore, including fearsome foes such as the Chimera and Minotaur. Main characters in Achilles: Legends Untold include:
- Achilles: The main character and player-controlled hero of Achilles: Legends Untold. This powerful warrior was unparalleled in strength and martial prowess and nigh invulnerable, save for a fatal weak spot on his heel.
- Hades: The Greek god of the underworld, Hades brings Achilles back from the dead to prevent Phobos’ cult from destroying Greece.
- The Blacksmith/Hephaestus: One of Achilles’ first main allies he unites with after coming back from the dead, the Blacksmith eventually reveals himself to be none other than the Greek god of the forge, Hephaestus.
- The Minotaur: The fearsome half-man and half-bull creature from Greek mythology, the Minotaur resides at the center of the Labyrinth, guarding Hephaestus’ magical hammer.
- Phobos: The god of fear in Greek mythology, Phobos has ousted Hades from the underworld and is gathering a following of cultists to destroy Greece. He is the game’s primary antagonist.
Games in the Achilles Series
Dark Point Games would initially release Legends Untold as the first game in its burgeoning Achilles series in 2022. This initial launch of the game was a roughly year-long Early Access period, after which the game would arrive on consoles to coincide with its 1.0 update. Since the launch of Legends Untold, Dark Point Games has been hard at work on a follow-up game that takes place in the same universe but switches up its gameplay formula. Rather than develop another Soulslike, the first follow-up in the Achilles series is a “bullet heaven” action roguelike similar to Vampire Survivors. Games in the Achilles series include:
- Achilles: Legends Untold (PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, 2023)
- Achilles: Survivor (PC – Early Access, 2025)

Achilles: Legends Untold Cheat FAQs
Does Achilles: Legends Untold have cheats?
Technically, there are no official cheats for Achilles: Legends Untold regardless of which version players have. However, the PC version does support third-party cheat engines and cheat trainer files. These are not official cheats but instead cheat mods that players can activate and deactivate at will when booting up the game. Unfortunately, the console versions of Achilles do not have cheat-engine compatibility.
Is Achilles: Legends Untold a Soulslike?
Dark Point Games describes Achilles: Legends Untold as an isometric Soulslike, and that’s a fairly accurate description. The game sits somewhere between a traditional action RPG with hack-and-slash combat and the more difficult, methodical stamina-based encounter design of a Soulslike. This middle ground that Achilles occupies lends itself to the game being somewhat easier than many would expect from a Soulslike, but that’s by no means a knock against the title. Players will still defeat enemies to collect experience, save and restore health at Shrines (the game’s version of Dark Souls‘ Bonfires) at the cost of resurrecting enemies, and need to complete “corpse runs” to acquire lost experience upon death. Ultimately, Achilles: Legends Untold would best be described as a “Soulslite”.
Is Achilles: Legends Untold hard?
There are multiple difficulty settings in Achilles: Legends Untold that allow the player to customize the experience. The standard difficulty setting is fairly forgiving as far as Soulslikes are concerned, with mechanics like blocking, dodging, and parrying ultimately less important than frantically attacking. Because Achilles lies somewhere between a full Soulslike and a traditional hack-and-slash action RPG, players will likely find it to be very manageable in terms of its difficulty. While death might be fairly common in the game’s early hours, players will eventually see their power curve grow exponentially and be easily dispatching enemies and bosses by the game’s end.
How long to beat Achilles: Legends Untold?
The main story of Achilles: Legends Untold is comparatively short to other Soulslikes, with most players able to clear an initial run of the game in about 11 hours. Players can stick around in the world before beginning New Game + to clean up any remaining side quests and achievements, which will add another 5-7 hours. To fully complete Achilles and unlock all achievements/trophies, players can expect to spend 17-20 hours.
