Originally released in April 1997, Alundra is a cult classic action RPG from Matrix Software and Working Designs. The title’s release on PlayStation would position it as one of the console’s premier ARPG titles, with Sony handling the game’s publishing in Japan as a first-party title. Despite being the first game in a duo of titles in the Alundra series, Alundra has an earlier pedigree. Developer Matrix Software would develop the cult classic Landstalker for the Sega Genesis, which shares many features in common with Alundra. Accordingly, Alundra is a spiritual successor to Landstalker and an equally highly-regarded title.
Alundra‘s place as one of the few action RPGs on the PlayStation would lead to considerable commercial success. The title would quickly sell over 100,000 copies in Japan, clearing 150,000 units by the end of 1997. Similarly, Alundra‘s Western launch in North America would see the title selling more than 100,000 units in under a month. The game’s success in Japan helped provide plenty of hype for the game’s eventual localization, leading to a fairly quick turnaround in the investment to import the title. Further, Alundra would prove to garner considerable critical praise, with the title holding an impressive 88% positive review aggregate score. It comes as no surprise, then, that Alundra often ends up on “best of” lists for the PlayStation.
Alundra Premise
In Alundra, players assume the role of the titular hero, a silent protagonist on a mission to discover the meaning behind a strange dream. An elf from the Elna clan, a group of elves known as the “Dreamwalkers” who receive premonitions during their slumber, Alundra has been having a recurring dream as of late. In the dream, a mysterious figure refers to him as the “Releaser” and tasks him with stopping the evil Melzas. Realizing that the dream must be a premonition of something greater than himself, Alundra purchases passage on a ship to seek out the dream’s meaning. However, the ship carrying Alundra gets caught in a storm and sinks, resulting in the hero being adrift at sea and awakening in a foreign land.
This setup gives way to a traditional action RPG in which players control Alundra as the game’s sole character and protagonist. That said, several important characters accompany Alundra on his journey, with the most prominent of them being his new friend Jess who rescues him after washing ashore. While there is combat in Alundra, the game’s emphasis is primarily on exploration and puzzle-solving, with Alundra‘s impressive world containing almost 8,000 different unique screens. Players must consider different kinds of terrain, as each different type affects player movement and abilities. Additionally, players do not earn experience points like traditional action RPGs but instead must use equipment and knowledge of the game to make their experience easier.
Alundra Main Characters
Aside from the titular hero, Alundra features several important characters that players interact with throughout their adventure. There’s Jess, who saves Alundra after he washes ashore, as well as Meia, a fellow elf from the Elna clan. The main characters in Alundra include:
- Alundra: The hero of Alundra and the game’s namesake. A young elf from the Elna clan, Alundra can interact with his dreams as if he were awake (a gift of the Elna clan earning them the name “Dreamwalkers”). When he continues to have a recurring dream foretelling a terrible evil, he sets off on an adventure to investigate.
- Jess: A father figure to Alundra who rescues him after being shipwrecked, Jess is a guide and confidant to the player throughout the game. Players will need to speak with him regularly to earn new items and equipment or get hints about where to go next,
- Meia: Meia is a fellow elf from the Elna clan and is somewhat critical of Alundra. After her father’s tragic death, she is weary of any Elna clan members who use their power to walk dreams flippantly. She follows after Alundra to keep an eye on him, eventually joining up to combat Melzas with him.
- Melzas: Melzas is the main villain of Alundra and a god within the game’s world. He initially came to the world of Alundra as a being from another dimension, and his physical appearance is somewhat ambiguous, choosing to instead summon familiars in his place.
Games in the Alundra Series
Though there are two official games in the Alundra series (both of which are on the PlayStation), the series is somewhat of a loosely connected trilogy. The first game in the “trilogy” is the Sega Genesis game Landstalker, which features very similar mechanics and elements as the Alundra games and is another Matrix Software title. Games in the Alundra series include:
- Landstalker (1992)
- Alundra (1997)
- Alundra 2 (1999)
Alundra Cheats & Secrets
Alundra has several secrets as well as plenty of Game Shark codes that players can use to break the game. Most of the Game Shark codes provide players with equipment or items that can trivialize the game’s early hours.
Alundra Secrets
Fix Jess’ Armor for Free
After getting Jess’ broken armor, it’s possible to fix it as long as players have plenty of money. However, there’s a trick players can use to fix the armor for free. Climb the cliffs behind Jess’ house until you reach the highest point on the right-hand side. From this spot, jump down a few levels until you reach a cliff ledge with a treasure chest (right behind Lurvy’s house). Jump from the ledge to the roof of Lurvy’s house, falling down the chimney. You’ll catch Lurvy in an embarrassing situation, prompting him to offer to fix anything of yours for free. Give him Jess’ armor to fix it for free.
Obtain the Gilded Falcon on the First Trip to Magyscar Dungeon
There’s a chest that players cannot reach in Magyscar Dungeon without the Fire Wand. To reach this chest on your first visit to the dungeon, complete the following steps:
- In the room with the chest, make sure you can access the torches on the north side by flicking the lever
- Place a bomb beside the bottom lever so that the edge of the explosion just barely makes it flip
- Quickly throw a bomb on the opposite side after the bomb explodes and flip the lever, quickly grabbing a torch and jumping onto the platforms.
If the steps above are done correctly, players will be able to access the north side of the bushes, burning them with the torch. Open the chest to receive a Gilded Falcon.
The Legendary Sword
Players can get the most powerful weapon in Alundra as soon as they have the Power Glove. After Jess gives you the Power Glove, die and use the “Quick Restart” feature a minimum of 16 times. Head for the statue of King Snow just west of Inoa Village, using the Power Glove to lift the large rock blocking the statue. Approach the statue. If the screen begins to turn dark you know that you are successful. King Snow will take pity on you and gift you with the Legend Sword.

Alundra Cheat FAQs
Does Alundra have cheats?
While there are no official cheats available in Alundra, there are several Game Shark codes players can use.
What kind of game is Alundra?
Alundra is an action-RPG or action-adventure game that has several similarities with The Legend of Zelda franchise. Players control a singular hero from an overhead, third-person perspective. The RPG systems are more in-depth than what one would find in Zelda and the combat is slightly more difficult.
