Atari Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

Atari Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

Atari’s US branch, otherwise known as Atari Interactive, has recently filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in an attempt to separate itself from its parent company. Supposedly, Atari Interactive is being held back by the current financial state of Atari S.A., the parent company, and would like to find sources of independent capital in an attempt to grow in the industry. In particular, Atari is looking to enter the digital and mobile world. If successful, they would focus their efforts on games for iOS, Android, and other mobile platforms.

Unfortunately, filing for bankruptcy means that Atari is going to have to sell off its assets, and by assets we mean their IP. Atari currently owns some of the most well-known IPs in the world of gaming including Pong, Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, and more. While filing for bankruptcy, Atari plans to continue its normal business operations.

Atari hasn’t been a big player in the gaming scene for a long time. It’s obvious that they aren’t the console powerhouse that they used to be. However, they have made a decent showing on the mobile market. If this move allows Atari to survive in the competitive modern day gaming industry, more power to them.
