Originally released on December 5, 2003, Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean is the first game in the Baten Kaitos series and the first RPG from developer Monolith Soft for a Nintendo console. Though the game was published by Namco, the working relationship between Monolith Soft and Nintendo would eventually pave the way for the two to enter a strategic partnership responsible for the Xenoblade Chronicles series. Baten Kaitos was one of the first and best RPGs in the GameCube library and would eventually attain cult classic status as a fan-favorite game on the system. There were plans to bring the game to the Nintendo DS that were eventually scrapped.
While player response to the game was overwhelmingly positive, Baten Kaitos failed to meet sales targets. Namco’s initial goal of the game selling 500,000 units would never be met, with the title only going on to move just over 300,000 units globally. Despite the game’s somewhat middling commercial response, Baten Kaitos holds a strong critical reception. The enduring appeal of the game as one of the first deckbuilding RPGs eventually led to it getting a remaster in 2023. Following years of exclusivity on the GameCube, Baten Kaitos and its sequel are now both available on Nintendo Switch and PC.

©CheatCC
Similar to many other classic JRPGs, Baten Kaitos puts players into the shoes of an unlikely hero on a quest to save their world. While the player doesn’t take control of the main character directly, they do act as a guardian spirit and observer of the game’s events, following main character Kalas and his allies as they attempt to stop the resurrection of an evil god sealed away years earlier. Kalas is a sort of naive outcast on a mission for revenge following the murder of his grandfather and brother. However, a chance encounter with a fellow traveler leads to the accidental unsealing of one of the 5 End Magnus, setting events into motion that could spell the end of the world.
Both the story and gameplay of Baten Kaitos center around Magnus — magical cards that contain the essence of items in the game’s world. Not only are the Magnus an important part of the game’s plot (especially the End Magnus that keep the evil god Malperico sealed away), but they also play an integral role in the game’s battle system. Players will navigate Baten Kaitos‘ world similar to other JRPGs, traveling a world map and visiting towns and dungeons along the way. However, the game’s combat system is unique in that it combines the turn-based battling of many JRPGs with an intuitive deckbuilding system that uses the many available Magnus in Baten Kaitos‘ world.

The story of Baten Kaitos puts players in the role of a guardian spirit observing and guiding the game’s protagonist, Kalas. Kalas is somewhat of an outcast and is traveling the world in search of revenge against the person who killed his grandfather and brother. However, after meeting Xelha and accidentally triggering an event that could set the end of the world in motion, Kalas gains new purpose and resolves to stop the Alfard Empire. Along the way, he meets up and allies with several helpful allies. Main characters in Baten Kaitos include:
- Kalas: The main character and protagonist of Baten Kaitos. Kalas is a single-minded outcast in search of revenge who gets wrapped up in a plot to save the world.

- Lyude: An ambassador to the Empire residing in the town of Diadem, Lyude joins up with Kalas after learning of the grave threat the End Magnus poses.
- Savyna: A former mercenary in the employ of the Empire, Savyna switches sides and joins up with Kalas to keep the End Magnus out of the Empire’s hands.
- Geldoblame: The corrupt emperor of the Alfard Empire and a secondary antagonist in the events of Baten Kaitos.
- Malperico: The evil God who is sealed away courtesy of the End Magnus and Baten Kaitos‘ primary antagonist.
Games in the Baten Kaitos Series
The Baten Kaitos series marks the first collaboration between Nintendo and Monolith Soft, with the developer making both the original games in the franchise as GameCube exclusives. Of course, Monolith Soft is now in a direct partnership with Nintendo, having developed the successful Xenoblade Chronicles franchise as well as assisting with development on multiple mainline Legend of Zelda games. While the studio has yet to return to Baten Kaitos following the two GameCube installments, those classic RPGs were recently given the remaster treatment, freeing them from their GameCube exclusivity. Games in the Baten Kaitos series include:
- Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean (GameCube, 2003)
- Baten Kaitos Origins (GameCube, 2006)
- Baten Kaitos I & II HD Remaster (PC, Nintendo Switch, 2023)

Unlocking Songs 53-58 in Sound Test
There is only one way to unlock the final 6 songs in the Sound Test menu. To unlock tracks 53-58, players must let the Shampoo Magnus age for 336 hours of in-game time. This process requires roughly 2 weeks to complete.
Developer References & Easter Eggs
While in Reverence, Picture Book Town, search the house across the street from the Fortune Teller. Inside, examine the two drawers to find the Monlith Pen and tri-Crescendo Pen. These secret items are subtle nods to Baten Kaitos‘ developers. They’re also necessary ingredients for SP Combo 141.
Xenosaga References & Easter Eggs
Developer Monolith Soft has two references to its previous work on the Xenosaga series within Baten Kaitos.
- The Rare Action Figure Magnus is KOS-MOS, the android who is a major character in the Xenosaga series.
- There is a boss in Baten Kaitos who goes by the name Gnosis. This is a reference to the enemy faction from the Xenosaga series.

Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean Cheat FAQs
What is the code for the bridge in Baten Kaitos?
While on the Goldoba in Baten Kaitos, players will normally need to defeat Imperial Walker enemies to obtain 4-digit passcodes that grant access to new parts of the ship. To proceed to the bridge and enter the boss fight, players can use the code 4653.
How do you level up in Baten Kaitos?
Contrary to most RPGs, leveling up in Baten Kaitos does not occur automatically. Instead, players need to visit a Church once they have the necessary experience. While there, players can talk to the Priest and Pray to raise their characters’ levels.
What kind of game is Baten Kaitos?
At its core, Baten Kaitos is a traditional Japanese role-playing game or JRPG. However, what separates the game from other titles in the genre is its unique combat system. Rather than use familiar turn-based or real-time combat models, Baten Kaitos opts for an original combat system that combines deckbuilding and card battling with more traditional JRPG elements.
How long to beat Baten Kaitos?
As is fairly standard for the genre, Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean is a dense experience. Just to complete the main story, players can expect to spend anywhere from 50-60 hours. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, though, as there are plenty of cards to collect, side quests to tackle, and other content not on the critical path that enriches the overall experience. For a full 100% playthrough of Baten Kaitos, players can expect to spend 110-120 hours.
