Battle.net Is No More

Battle.net Is No More

Blizzard recently announced something that to many might seem infinitesimal, but to great many more means the disappearance of an era. Blizzard’s online gaming service has been called Battle.net since Diablo released 20 years ago. Now, the company is trying to step away from that name.

Over the years, Blizzard has noted some confusion in the general public between the Battle.net and Blizzard names. Not everyone realized that they were one and the same. This is much like EA’s online gaming portal, Origin. The names are entirely different, and yet those in the know understand that they are intrinsically linked. For those just getting started out however, it’s understandable that there might be some confusion.

The update to Blizzard’s Battle.net portal changes few few things. The Battle.net logo disappeared and is being replaced with a good old Blizzard logo. This is in addition from the name change from Battle.net to just Blizzard.

As I said in the beginning, to many this will seem silly and won’t affect their lives much at all. Even to those that it does affect, they understand that it isn’t something that should bother them as much as it does. But it’s similar to my realization years ago that the Runescape I grew up with is now called “ Old School Runescape .” Has the name change altered the landscape of my life? No. Did it make me a little sad? Decidedly yes.

Are you mourning the loss of Battle.net, or are you on the side that just doesn’t care either way? Let me know in the comments!
