Battlefield: Bad Company Preview for Xbox 360 (X360)

Battlefield: Bad Company Preview for Xbox 360 (X360)

December 27, 2007 – Battlefield was one of the most critically acclaimed militaristic shooters for the PC. Battlefield 2 took the series to the next level and gave PC gamers an experience to remember that featured realistic physics and sandbox-style gameplay. And while all of this was great for PC gamers, console gamers felt a little left out. But now PS3 and Xbox 360 owners will be able to experience this unique and intriguing series with the release of Battlefield: Bad Company. This game will feature all of the gameplay that made the first two entries so great on the PC and a little something extra for all those patient console gamers.

Of course, the biggest feature of the Battlefield games had to be the sandbox style gameplay that allowed online users to have a large amount of freedom in the game. And while Battlefield: Bad Company may have more of a focus on the single-player side of things, the sandbox-style gameplay still remains. However, this time Battlefield Bad Company will take a more environmentally-focused approach and feature something that has rarely been seen in console games: an environment that is 90% destructible.

This may not sound like such a big deal, but when you really think about it, this environmentally-focused approach will change the way you play FPS games. Imagine for a moment that you are in the heat of battle and need to find cover. All of a sudden you duck into a small building. As you gather various weaponry or heal yourself, the building falls around you, effectively knocking you out. You realize that nowhere is safe. And of course this street runs both ways. Let’s say you see an enemy duck back into a tucked-away bunker, and you have the heat to blow it up. Once you blow it away, the enemy is gone.

This facet of the game should add quite a bit of frenzied and variable gameplay to the single-player mode. But as exciting as an almost fully-destructible world is, it’s not the only new feature about Battlefield: Bad Company that has people talking. The all-new single player modes have both newcomers and Battlefield veterans excited. Since this is the Battlefield series’ first real foray into the single player arena, expectations are fairly high. And while there’s not too much known specifically about the story of the game, we do know that it involves the story of a company of soldiers that has found itself on the wrong side of the war. These soldiers cross enemy lines, enter neutral zones, and generally abandon all orderly conduct in favor of furthering their own agenda: some sizeable loot. The single-player story will also feature some dark humor, which is also a first for the Battlefield series that generally favored gritty realism over anything else.

Although many are excited about the single-player mode, many also look forward to the inclusion of Battlefield’s trademark online multiplayer modes finally making it to a console. And while specifics are still unknown about the exact number of modes or what they’ll entail, Battlefield: Bad Company is expected to include all the online functionality of the past PC versions.

And of course, no discussion about an upcoming game is complete without some discussion of the overall look of the game. Because it was a PC game, Battlefield looked pretty good before, if you had the hardware for it to run at its most optimum look. However, Battlefield: Bad Company looks like it is getting a serious visual upgrade in its first console title. Instead of getting your gritty-looking PC graphics that make you feel removed from the action, Battlefield: Bad Company is giving you smooth cinematic videos that let you go to war in style. Early screenshots essentially confirm that the game will run in top-form HD, and things like explosions look pretty sweet.

Battlefield: Bad Company looks like one of the many titles that are helping to bridge the gap between PC and console gaming. But instead of sacrificing features as so many titles often do when they make the console leap, Battlefield: Bad Company looks to take the series in a new direction while maintaining the classic Battlefield style of gameplay that we’ve all grown to love. Add that with the fact that Battlefield: Bad Company will be the first FPS title with a 90% destructible environment, and I think we’ve got ourselves a serious contender for the first truly trailblazing game of 2008!
