Platinum Games’ and Sega’s Bayonetta originally released on October 29, 2009 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Regarded as one of the best titles in the character action subgenre of action games, Bayonetta would eventually be ported to PC and 8th generation consoles, even making its way to the Nintendo Switch courtesy of an exclusivity deal between Nintendo and developer Platinum Games. The title serves as the third project from Platinum Games, a studio made up of Capcom veterans with Hideki Kamiya (director of Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry) at the helm. While the game does borrow several ideas from Devil May Cry, it stands out thanks to what Kamiya describes as an emphasis on “fashionable” attacks over “stylish” ones.
The success and acclaim of Bayonetta would quickly raise it to be recognized as one of the greatest action games ever made. In addition to strong critical praise, the game would sell over a million units just a few months after release. Further, Bayonetta has several awards to its name, including some Game of the Year accolades. Bayonetta also has the distinction of being one of the few games to ever receive a perfect 40 out of 40 score from legendary Japanese gaming publication Famitsu.
Bayonetta Premise

Players begin Bayonetta as the titular hero awakens from a five-century slumber with no memory of who she is. Gradually, players learn that Bayonetta’s powers come from her place as an Umbra Witch, a coven of powerful sorceresses in an eternal conflict with the Lumen Sages. The conflict between these two forces is part of the crucial balance between the realm of the angels (Paradiso) and the realm of the demons (Inferno). Bayonetta finds herself in the realm of humans, Purgatorio or Chaos, with forces from both sides trying to kill her at every turn. Uncovering the mystery of who she is and what to do with the two Eyes of the World she possesses will ultimately lead her to shocking discoveries regarding the balance of the universe.
In terms of gameplay, Bayonetta is a character action game in the same vein as Devil May Cry. Interestingly, many of the staff who worked on Devil May Cry would eventually leave Capcom to form Clover Studio, subsequently forming Bayonetta‘s developer Platinum Games after Clover Studio’s closure. Accordingly, gameplay in Bayonetta is very similar to Devil May Cry, with the title’s focus on flashy, frantic action and combo-based combat with a high skill ceiling. Players are rewarded points for the variation and style in their combos, with higher-ranking scores earning players special medals at the conclusion of each chapter.
Bayonetta Main Characters

Central to the plot of Bayonetta is the titular character, a shapeshifting Umbra Witch who uses her hair and ambidextrous limbs to dispatch demons. Awakening after a 500-year slumber with little memory of who she is, Bayonetta sets out on a path of discovery while also contending with regular attacks from the forces attempting to stop her. She eventually uncovers the reason behind her memory loss and current conflict by discovering the ages-old conflict between her coven, the Umbra Witches, and a rival faction known as the Lumen Sages. Joining Bayonetta on her journey is a cast of colorful allies and enemies that underscore the game’s over-the-top action and atmosphere. The main characters in Bayonetta include:
- Bayonetta: The main character of the series and the titular hero of Bayonetta, Bayonetta is a powerful Umbra Witch who uses her hair as a weapon to slay demons. She eventually discovers that her existence as the product of a union between an Umbra Witch and a Lumen Sage is what upsets the balance of the eternal conflict between the two.
- Jeanne: A rival Umbra Witch, Jeanne is a frequent thorn in Bayonetta’s side throughout her adventure before eventually helping her beat the Lumen Sages.
- Luka: A friend of Bayonetta’s who has known the witch since she was a child, Luka acts as Bayonetta’s guide to the history of the conflict between the Umbra Witches and the Lumen Sages as well as giving guidance on how to navigate the human world.
- Enzo: Enzo is an informant and chauffeur to Bayonetta, often serving as the game’s comic relief.
- Rodin: Rodin is the owner of the Gates to Hell bar, a place where Bayonetta can improve her skills and acquire new weapons safe from the dangers of either Paradiso or Chaos.
Games in the Bayonetta Series
Following the original’s success and acclaim as one of the best games in the character action genre, the Bayonetta series would continue on, eventually reaching a full trilogy of mainline games and a spin-off. Not long after the release of the third game in the franchise, series creator and Platinum Games founder Hideki Kamiya left the studio, leaving the future of the series up in the air. However, comments from Kamiya indicate that Platinum Games has every intention of continuing the series in his wake. Games in the Bayonetta series include:
- Bayonetta (PS3, Xbox 360, 2009)
- Bayonetta 2 (Wii U, 2014)
- Bayonetta 3 (Nintendo Switch, 2022)
- Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon (Nintendo Switch, 2023)

Equip Scarborough Fair, Bazillions, or Onyx Roses in Bayonetta’s hands and Durga on her feet. In the other set, equip Lt. Kilgore on her feet and the same weapon in her hands. Use the basic four punch and kick combo (PPPPK) on set 1 with Durga, then switch to set 2 with Lt. Kilgore as soon as the kick animation starts. If done correctly, Bayonetta will fire a powerful salvo of rockets that can instantly wipe out tough foes. Note that this method requires having some late-game weapons in your inventory.
