Originally released in 2015 for the Nintendo 3DS, Bravely Second: End Layer is Silicon Studios and Square Enix’s direct follow-up to the 2012 RPG Bravely Default. Like its predecessor, Bravely Second sees players controlling a group of 4 heroes in a classically-styled JRPG complete with a narrative that blends elements of high fantasy and science fiction. The title also shares much in common with its predecessor in terms of mechanics and narrative, with Bravely Second acting as a continuation of the first game and a side story rather than a true full sequel.
The success and critical acclaim of Bravely Default would lead to a sequel being greenlit as early as 2012, with the team eventually forming and beginning work in 2013. Bravely Default and Bravely Second character designer Akihiko Yoshida would leave Square Enix that same year, with Bravely Second serving as the artist’s final project for the studio. While Bravely Second would receive positive critical reviews and achieve strong commercial success, the title would also be the subject of some criticism for sticking too closely to the mechanics of the original Bravely Default and doing little to distinguish itself as a sequel.
Bravely Second would sell considerably well, even if it did not match the same level of success as Bravely Default‘s debut. More than 100,000 copies would sell in just the first week of the game’s launch, with the total sales reaching an estimated 700,000 units roughly a year after the game’s release.
Bravely Second: End Layer Premise
Similar to the first game in the series, the cornerstone of Bravely Second is the Brave and Default system. During battles, players can select actions as normal or choose to either Brave or Default. When choosing to Brave, players can stack several actions at once (attacking, defending, using special moves, healing, etc.) at the cost of not acting for several turns afterward. Alternatively, players can choose to Default, forsaking their current turn or turns to freely stack several actions at a later point in the battle.
Another key aspect of Bravely Second‘s gameplay is the Job system. Taking inspiration from both Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy Tactics, Bravely Second continues the Job system from Bravely Default, adding more Jobs and decreasing the max level for each Job. Jobs now have special items players can obtain known as Asterisks. Obtaining an Asterisk will unlock the hidden ability for a Job as well as raise its cap to Level 11. Like in Bravely Default, players can easily swap Jobs at will outside of battle.
The story of Bravely Second picks up just two years after the events of Bravely Default, continuing that game’s narrative and bringing it to a satisfying conclusion. Players once again take control of returning heroes Tiz and Edea, with newcomers Yew and Magnolia completing the party. in addition to the main quest, players also have a Moon Base management and building mini-game they can participate in to earn rewards similar to the city-building aspect from the original Bravely Default.
Bravely Second: End Layer Main Characters
Original Bravely Default heroes Tiz and Edea return in Bravely Second, with newcomers Yew and Magnolia joining in on the adventure. Other characters from Bravely Default make appearances and play important roles in the game’s story, but much of Bravely Second‘s narrative revolves around the player’s party of heroes and their enemies. The main characters in Bravely Second include:
- Tiz: Following his failure to save Norende in Bravely Default, Tiz falls into a 2-year coma only to awaken and be tasked with rescuing his former ally Agnès.
- Edea: Following the events of Bravely Default, Edea returns to Eternia to lead the Ducal Guard. When she hears of Agnès’ kidnapping, she heads off to investigate, eventually crossing paths with Yew and joining the party.
- Yew: Yew is one of Agnès’ sworn protectors and the main hero of Bravely Second. He assembles the party to rescue Agnès, including tracking down the previously comatose Tiz.
- Magnolia: The sole survivor of an attack on her village, Magnolia is a powerful Ba’al Buster who hails from the moon.
- Kaiser Oblivion: The presumed antagonist of Bravely Second, Kaiser Oblivion is the leader of the Glanz Empire who abducts Agnès Oblige, one of the heroes of Bravely Default and the new Pope of the Crystal Orthodoxy.
Games in the Bravely Default Series
Silicon Studio and Square Enix’s Bravely Default series would begin with 2012’s Bravely Default, an unabashedly old-school JRPG with nods to several classic titles in the Square Enix library. Since that initial game, there have been three titles in the Bravely series. Bravely Second would arrive just three years after the launch of Bravely Default, continuing its story and revising several gameplay mechanics. The most recent entry in the series, Bravely Default II, is a Nintendo Switch exclusive that features a brand-new story and characters. Games in the Bravely Default series include:
- Bravely Default (Nintendo 3DS, 2012)
- Bravely Second: End Layer (Nintendo 3DS, 2015)
- Bravely Default II (Nintendo Switch, 2021)

Dungeon | Location |
---|---|
Dimension’s Cauldron | In the Mythril Mines |
Dimension’s Hollow | Near Chompshire |
Dimension’s Keep | Near Caldisla |
New Game +
Like many other RPGs, Bravely Second gives players the option to start a new save file carrying overall progress from a previous save. However, the way that the New Game + function works in Bravely Second is slightly different. Players must use New Game + to fully complete Bravely Second, defeat the true final boss, and see the game’s actual ending.
After completing Chapter 4, players will have the option to save and return to the title screen. You can now use this file to start “New Game +”. As expected, this carries over items, money, character progress, and more to the new game file. However, if players press Start after gaining control of Yew in battle, this will unlock the hidden second half of the game. Additionally, players can now redo any Asterisk quests they did not complete on their initial playthrough.
After players beat the full Bravely Second experience, they can save their complete file again and unlock a proper New Game + mode that allows them to start from any Chapter.

Bravely Second: End Layer Cheat FAQs
Is Bravely Second: End Layer a sequel?
Technically, Bravely Second is the direct sequel and follow-up to the original Bravely Default. However, a better way to envision the game is as Bravely Default 1.5. The story and mechanics of Bravely Second position it as more of a reimagining of the original game rather than a true sequel. The official sequel to Bravely Default is Bravely Default II, and Bravely Second is more of a continuation of the original game.
How many endings are there in Bravely Second?
Unlike Bravely Default, there is only one true ending in Bravely Second. There is an alternate version of the game’s ending in which Anne makes the moon disappear. However, the commonly accepted true ending of the game is the one that players see after defeating the true final boss.
What is the max Job level in Bravely Second?
The standard max Job level in Bravely Second is 10. However, by using the Asterisk items, players can “Awaken” Jobs and increase their level to 11, unlocking powerful abilities that are otherwise inaccessible.
Should I play Bravely Second before Bravely Default II?
Interestingly, Bravely Default II is a completely separate game with a plot that shares nothing in common with either Bravely Default or Bravely Second. As a result, players can go into Bravely Default II without needing to play the other two games in the series. Conversely, Bravely Second is a direct follow-up to Bravely Default and a continuation of its story, meaning players should experience the original Bravely Default prior to playing Bravely Second.
