Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow – Mirror Of Fate HD Cheats & Secrets for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360

Originally released October 25, 2013, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate HD is the PC and console re-release of the 3DS game of the same name. The console launch of the title was meant to coincide with the launch of the second mainline Lords of Shadow game, which concludes the story of Gabriel Belmont and establishes the new Castlevania series canon. Developed by Spanish studio Mercury Steam, Mirror of Fate was the studio’s first handheld Metroidvania title before it would go on to develop Metroid: Samus Returns (also for the 3DS) and 2021’s Metroid Dread. Interestingly, Mirror of Fate began as a console game and then was reimagined for the 3DS, making the HD re-release closer to the game’s original vision.

Reviews for Mirror of Fate were mixed, with many praising the game’s story and lore while finding fault with its gameplay. While the game does have Metroidvania elements akin to the beloved handheld entries in the Castlevania series for the DS and Game Boy Advance, it is not a pure Metroidvania in the traditional sense. Still, Mirror of Fate is not without its fans, having developed a bit of a cult following in the wake of its release. Despite a mixed critical reception, the title currently sits at an 84% “Very Positive” Steam User Score on the Steam storefront.

Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow – Mirror Of Fate HD Premise

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate HD gameplay

Both a prequel and sequel to 2011’s Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Mirror of Fate is an important bridging storyline in the Castlevania franchise connecting the new series lore to the existing entries in the franchise. Players discover the origins behind Simon Belmont obtaining the Vampire Killer whip (which he uses in the original Castlevania and beyond), the connections between Dracula and the Belmont clan, and how Dracula’s son Alucard came to be. While the story picks up immediately following the events of Lords of Shadow, it also reveals elements of Gabriel’s past prior to his adventure and transformation in that game.

In terms of its gameplay, Mirror of Fate is a more traditional Castlevania game than the first Lords of Shadow title. While Lords of Shadow is more along the lines of a 3D character action game (particularly, the original run of God of War titles), Mirror of Fate is an action-platformer with some Metroidvania elements. The title uses a 2D-3D aesthetic in which character and enemy models (as well as environmental assets) are displayed using 3D graphics in a 2D perspective. The game features a large, interconnected map and a completion percentage tracker for each of the three playable characters, as well as plenty of hidden areas and secrets to acquire that result in character upgrades.

The HD re-release of Mirror of Fate is noteworthy in that it includes the version-exclusive Boss Rush mode. Otherwise, it is the same game as the original 3DS release, albeit with upscaled textures and no optional stereoscopic 3D effects.

Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow – Mirror Of Fate HD Main Characters

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate HD gameplay

Mirror of Fate takes place as both a prequel and follow-up to the events of the first game in the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow reboot, showing the aftermath of Gabriel’s journey in the first game. Notably, the story is split across three characters whose fates are all intertwined with Dracula’s, with players controlling two descendants of Gabriel’s from the Belmont clan and fan-favorite character Alucard, coming to understand the complex relationship he has with his father Dracula given the history behind his parentage. Mirror of Fate ends up being an incredibly important piece in the Castlevania canon, bridging the Lords of Shadow reboot with the narratives of classic series entries like Symphony of the Night. Main characters in Mirror of Fate include:

  • Simon Belmont: Simon Belmont is the first playable character in Mirror of Fate and the current vampire-hunting warrior from the Belmont clan. He heads to Dracula’s estate, Castlevania, to kill the vampire lord.
  • Trevor Belmont: Trevor Belmont is the son that Gabriel Belmont never knew about, his existence and identity hidden from the vampire hunter due to an ill omen. He is Simon Belmont’s father.
  • Alucard: Alucard is the son of Dracula and one of three playable characters in Mirror of Fate. He also happens to be the protagonist of the legendary PS1 series entry, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
  • Dracula: The dark lord of all vampires, Dracula is shown to be somewhat of a tragic figure despite his place as the series antagonist. The Lords of Shadow games explicitly connect Dracula’s existence to the deeds of key members of the Belmont clan, most notably Gabriel Belmont from Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

Games in the Castlevania Series

Originally a handheld-only follow-up to Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Mirror of Fate would eventually make its way to consoles courtesy of the HD re-release, joining Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 to complete the trilogy of reboot games retconning the Castlevania story. Since the release of Lords of Shadow 2, Konami has yet to develop a new game in the series, but it has released several collections that compile classic entries in the Castlevania franchise. From the series’ beginnings as a straightforward action-platformer, Castlevania would evolve into a franchise taking inspiration from games such as The Legend of Zelda and Super Metroid, resulting in the birth of the “Metroidvania” subgenre combining “Metroid” and “Castlevania”. Games in the Castlevania series include:

Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow – Mirror Of Fate HD Cheat FAQs

Does the Konami Code work in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate HD?

The Konami Code (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A) is a famous cheat code that works in many of Konami’s classic games and even some more contemporary ones. While the Konami Code does work in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, it does not work in Mirror of Fate. There is no known use for the Konami Code in the game.

Is the story of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate HD canon?

The story of Mirror of Fate fills in some important gaps in the new Castlevania series canon established by Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. The first game in the Castlevania series’ reboot is a prequel set hundreds of years before the events of the NES original, establishing the link between Count Dracula and the Belmont clan. Mirror of Fate is an official entry into the series’ canon that further explains the Belmont lineage, as well as how fan-favorite character Alucard (Dracula’s son) came to be.

Is Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate HD a Metroidvania?

This is an interesting question, as it’s not a simple “yes or no” answer. While Mirror of Fate has some Metroidvania elements, it’s not a true Metroidvania in that it’s missing some of the genre’s key elements. Players do traverse a massive interconnected map, but there’s no real ability-gating or backtracking necessary to progress. Additionally, the game is fairly linear, with no real opportunities for sequence-breaking. What Mirror of Fate does have, however, is a similar mix of combat, exploitation, and platforming that are central to the Castlevania series and part of why the franchise is one-half of the Metroidvania portmanteau.

How long to beat Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate HD?

Most players will complete Mirror of Fate in roughly 8 hours. However, the game does give the incentive to go back and complete other side content and additional difficulty modes to see the true ending. To fully complete the game and unlock all achievements, players can expect to spend anywhere from 12-15 hours.
