Cloudgine’s Rendering in Crackdown 3 Was Complicated

The destruction in the Xbox One’s upcoming title, Crackdown 3 , will be largely handled by Cloudgine; a cloud based rendering service that allows the Xbox One to produce graphical quality beyond what the machine itself is typically capable of producing.

According to Maurizio Sciglio, CEO of Cloudgine, this process is actually extremely complicated. While it does allow developers to remove typical resource limitations posed by hardware, they are required to think differently about computing.

Sciglio went on to say,”Physics distribution comes with a long list of challenges; How to split the cost of a single physics simulation across multiple servers? How to minimize the inevitable latency introduced by the distribution? How to scale the system to use compute power on demand?”

Apparently, they have some answers, because Crackdown 3 is still using the technology to power its destructable environment. It’s an innovative and promising new direction for games, and could be more fuel on the console war fire once we see what the technology is truly capable of.
