Destiny Dev Talks The Dark Below Mistakes; “Will Not Be Repeated” in House of Wolves

Bungie’s Luke Smith recently outlined to a NeoGAF thread the various mistakes the developer had made with Destiny’s first expansion, The Dark Below , and what the studio will do to improve these mistakes in time for the upcoming second DLC expansion, House of Wolves .

With the mistakes for The Dark Below in mind, Smith sternly promised that the same mistakes “will not be repeated,” suggesting that House of Wolves may deliver a more fair rewards system when it’s released. A couple of mistakes that were acknowledged were the invalidation of gear rewarded from the base game’s Vault of Glass raid, and the matter upgrading Exotic items to reset their respective attributes. Smith promised that Bungie will “continue to improve acquisition stories and frequency,” as well as lessen the grind to “get players to the fun parts of their arsenal faster.”

Smith continued on to discuss the changes that may possibly be implemented for The Dark Below’s raid, Crota’s End. Specifically regarding the rate of rewards versus Destiny’s Vault of Glass, it’s implied that Bungie will be increasing the global drop rates in Crota’s End, with the aim of enabling “ dedicated players to be around 32 or real close by the time Hard mode came out.” The variability of perks will also be increased, with the goal being so “players would reach 32 easier than 30, but would have more customization and options to build the perfect set (in terms of stats, perks, weapon affinities).”

The topic of Shards we all also brought up. “ We want fewer barriers to equipping upgrades,” Smith explained. “The shard economies erect these barriers between players and the new piece of gear they just got.” While Bungie won’t be adjusting the Shard economy so as to not invalidate the efforts of Destiny’s players, the developer may instead be “removing the barrier between that new drop you’re excited to get and actually being able to equip it,” suggesting that applicable items may soon have their Shard necessity removed entirely.
