Originally released in 2013, Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut is the expanded and altered re-release of Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ 2011 action RPG/immersive sim hybrid Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The Director’s Cut release is noteworthy for rebalancing the game’s boss fights (a major sticking point with players from the original version) as well as bringing the title to the Wii U for the first time (complete with Wii U GamePad functionality). It is the first title in a reboot of the series, with its sequel Deus Ex: Mankind Divided following in 2016.
Critical response to Human Revolution and the Director’s Cut would prove to be largely positive, with many fans praising the return to elements from the original game following the mixed reception to Deus Ex: Invisible War. The title holds an impressive 91% positive review aggregate score, with critics praising the story, combat, freedom of choice, and dark cyberpunk atmosphere. Commercial response to Human Revolution is equally positive, with both the original release and the Director’s Cut becoming best-selling titles the month of their release and going on to move roughly 6 million units.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut Premise
Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ reboot to the Deus Ex franchise is a prequel set 25 years before the events of the original Deus Ex, with humanity on the precipice of its next phase of evolution via cybernetic augmentation. Of course, competing interests disagree on whether humans should embrace or reject this exciting new technology, with billionaire entrepreneurs, tech companies, and world governments swinging the balance one way or another. Caught in the middle of it all is a security enforcer for one of these figureheads, Adam Jensen, who uncovers a vast conspiracy to control the direction of humanity’s future.
In terms of its gameplay, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a bit of a departure from previous games in the series. Whereas the first two Deus Ex games are strictly first-person, Human Revolution switches between first-person and third-person depending on what the player’s actions dictate, with the camera shifting during firefights to show Jensen in cover and give players an over-the-shoulder view. However, like previous games in the franchise, Human Revolution gives players a good amount of freedom to choose how they approach objectives, with players having options to go in guns blazing or use stealth to slip by undetected.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut Main Characters
Interestingly, Human Revolution is a prequel to the original Deus Ex, taking place roughly 25 years before the events of the original game to show a society in transition. As human augmentation begins to become more commonplace, there are those resistant to the idea of cybernetically enhanced individuals becoming a ruling class while the rest of humanity becomes obsolete. This results in several competing ideologies that each has its own goals for the continued evolution of humanity and how to best harness rapidly advancing technology. Players take on the role of Adam Jensen, an augmented human who works for billionaire tech entrepreneur David Sarif. Main characters in Deus Ex: Human Revolution include:
- Adam Jensen: The player character and protagonist of Human Revolution. Jensen is a former police officer-turned-security official for David Sarif.
- David Sarif: A genius tech entrepreneur and scientist who is on the cutting edge of human cybernetic augmentation.
- Hugh Darrow: An enigmatic billionaire and Sarif’s rival, Darrow is building a facility to help stop global warming but is secretly working on a plan to scare humanity away from augmentation.
- Zhao Yun Ru: Another of Sarif’s rivals, Zhao is part of a secretive organization working to control humanity’s direction through the manipulation of global forces.
Games in the Deus Ex Series
The original Deus Ex was a revolutionary game for its time, pushing the envelope regarding what was possible in a 3D first-person action game and, along with Warren Spector’s Thief, helping to invent the immersive sim subgenre. Since that first game, the series has gradually moved away from deeper RPG mechanics in favor of a more action-oriented approach, mixing stealth and unique abilities to deliver an increasingly impressive futuristic sci-fi combat sandbox in each entry. The most recent game in the series, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, was the highly acclaimed sequel to Human Revolution. There were plans for a new entry in the series but the franchise remains in limbo following Square Enix’s sale of the rights to the IP. Games in the Deus Ex series include:
- Deus Ex (PC, 2000)
- Deus Ex: Invisible War (PC, Xbox, 2003)
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution (PC, PS3, Xbox 360, 2011)
- Deus Ex: The Fall (iOS, PC, 2013)
- Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (PC, PS4, Xbox One, 2016)

Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut Secrets & Glitches
Easy XP Trick
Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut features the same easy XP trick from the original release. This glitch works anywhere, but the first and easiest place to do it is at Adam Jensen’s computer. His personal terminal is in his office at Sarif HQ, which players can visit after returning from the Sarif Manufacturing Plant hostage situation.
Use the recently acquired Praxis Kit and spend the Praxis Point to upgrade to Hacking Security Level 3. Additionally, try to collect as many Nuke Programs as possible to help speed up the process. Nuke Programs can be acquired in the Sarif Manufacturing Plant or while searching and hacking into the computers around Sarif HQ.
Before beginning this trick, save the game. While using Adam Jensen’s computer, hacking the special reward nodes will earn a +500 XP bonus. After hacking the optional nodes or the network node, pause the game and load the save file created before you begin the hack. Do not complete the hack. When the “Access Granted” window appears, do not select “OK”. Instead, load the save file you created before starting the hack. Then, try the hack again. Repeat the previous steps, capturing every optional node or the network node. The game will keep your previous +500 XP bonus while also awarding you another +1000 XP. For your third try, you will get +1500 XP, etc. Repeating the hack 5 times will result in a +2500 XP bonus.
Make sure to keep loading and never select “OK” to complete the hack. Repeat this trick as many times as desired to get potentially infinite XP early in the game. You can always return to Adam Jensen’s computer later in the game to repeat this trick or try it on other hacking challenges throughout the game.
Easy Hacking (PC)
To keep attempting hacks without running out of hack attempts, press [Q] to cancel hacking, then press [H], and the failed attempt will not count against your limited number of chances. Note that you must do this before running out of time once the alert triggers.
Easy Kills
Upgrade Adam’s Hacking and Strength skills to be able to pick up and use Turrets. Doing so will allow you to plant them in a room and move them to a safe location while they take out enemies. Note that Turrets have infinite ammo and each kill will still reward XP.
Easy Stealth Kills
Players can utilize this trick to successfully (and consistently) take down enemies silently. Find an indestructible object, such as a barrel or container, and carry it with you. When you find a group of enemies, stand in a position where you want the enemy to approach. While holding the object, throw it next to yourself or close to where you want the target to approach. The entire group of enemies will be alerted when they hear the object hit the ground or wall you threw it at, but only one should approach to investigate. The enemy will walk to the alerted area, stand where the sound came from, and then begin to walk back after finding nothing. You can then sneak up and knock them out/kill them undetected.
Note: If you throw the object a long distance, the investigating enemy may track the object’s flight path directly back to your position. It is better to throw it nearby for repeated use.
Easy Storage
To store an item instead of carrying it around, simply throw it on the ground. The game will save the locations of items, even after leaving the region.
Easy Funicular Segment
In Picus Communications, when you have to wait for the Funicular to come up, there will be waves of enemies storming the room. Before pressing the elevator button, block both entrances to the room with heavy objects. Note that this requires augmenting the Move/Lift Heavy Objects. There are two vending machines outside the room, two crates next to the security computer, and a turret in the center that can be used to block the lower doorway and the side corridor entrance. If you block the doorways correctly, the guards will stay in the other room outside for the entire duration of waiting for the Funicular.
Note: It is recommended you save before pressing the elevator button in case the barricades do not work.
QR Codes
There are QR codes on boxes and other things throughout the game. Scan them with a smartphone camera to pull up bits of Deus Ex: Human Revolution story content as well as a fictional website.

Praxis Kit Locations
Players can search the following locations in each major area to find valuable Praxis Kits:
Sarif Manufacturing Lab
After exiting the Assembly Line, you will reach the Factoring Labs via elevator. Exit the elevator to find the first Praxis Kit ahead in the hallway.
Detroit City Sewers
Below or near the Chiron Building and around the northern sections of the Detroit Hub, enter the sewers and look at the map. At the eastern corner, in a dead-end south of a sewer entrance, you will find a light wall. Punch through the light wall (requires Augmented Strength) to find the Praxis Kit.
Detroit City Apartments
Down the alley behind the gun-runner’s abandoned gas station is an apartment building behind a locked gate. Go to the second floor of the apartment building and break into the apartment with a level 5 lock. Alternatively, you can enter the door code (2356) to get in. Hack into the bedroom, then hack into the cage. Alternatively, you can enter code (3663) to enter the cage. Look on the shelves to your left when you enter the cage to find a Praxis Kit.
Detroit LIMB Clinic
Players can purchase 2 Praxis Kits here for 5,000 credits each. During the second visit to Detroit, the Praxis Kits will be restocked. A Doctor inside will also reward you with a Praxis Kit for completing his side quest during the second visit to Detroit.
Hengsha LIMB Clinic
Players can purchase 2 Praxis Kits here for 5,000 credits each. During the second visit, the Praxis Kits will be restocked. A Doctor inside will also reward you with a Praxis Kit for completing his side quest during the second visit.
Hengsha City Streets
During your first visit, as Jensen moves to speak with the hacker in Alice Garden Pods, your pilot (Malik) will find you. Complete her side quest to get a Praxis Kit as a reward.
Hengsha Sewers
Underneath the city, look for a “U” section of sewers below the Huang Hua Hotel. Break through a light wall in the sewer (requires Augmented Strength) to find a Praxis Kit and some Painkillers.
The Hive
Complete the Bartender, Bobby Bao’s, side-quest to get a Praxis Kit. Alternatively, kill or stun Bobby Bao and search his body to get the Praxis Kit without completing the quest.
Hengsha Court Gardens
Sneak into the elevator shaft. Instead of climbing up, climb down to the bottom of the shaft, and look underneath the elevator to find a Praxis Kit on the floor.
Tai Yong Medical
On the second floor of the actual Tai Yong building, go up to the second floor after entering the Lee Geng lab. Instead of going up to the third floor, turn left and take the hallway to go through a door into another corridor with two offices. Enter the first office to find a Praxis Kit in the southwestern corner.
Picus
As you enter the news building and reach the main office floor, you will see the area is empty. Go to the center row of cubicles and check the center-left desks to find a Praxis Kit.
Detroit City Apartments
Enter the apartment building across from the Chiron Building and go up to the third floor to find a Praxis Kit near a dead body. There is an EMP mine hidden under the body, so be sure to set it off first. You will find this one naturally while completing a main quest during your second visit to the Detroit Hub.
Panchaea
Deep inside the chaos of Panchea is a LIMB Clinic behind a barricade of vending machines. Move them or destroy them to get inside the Clinic. Here, players can purchase two Praxis Kits for 5,000 credits each.
Control Camera During Dialogue
During third-person, non-cutscene dialog with Adam and another character, you can control the camera by holding [Aim] and looking around with the normal controls.
