Originally released July 1, 1999, Dino Crisis is Capcom’s other main survival horror series on the PlayStation and shares many of the same creative leads and developers as Resident Evil. The game features direction from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, who wanted to try his hand at a new type of horror game following the success of that series. As such, Dino Crisis shares many elements common in the Resident Evil games, albeit with a definitive bent toward action and quick thinking as opposed to the slower, more methodical pace of Resident Evil. Notably, Mikami would take to calling Dino Crisis “panic horror” instead of “survival horror” thanks to how the studio programmed the game’s dinosaur enemies to be aggressive and reactive, forcing the player to think on their feet.
Predictably, Dino Crisis would prove to be a major success almost on par with the Resident Evil games. Despite Mikami voicing that he wished for the game’s dinosaur enemies to be even more aggressive and terrifying, players were suitably thrilled by what Dino Crisis offered, resulting in the game selling nearly 3 million units on the PlayStation alone. Following the game’s release on the PS1, Dino Crisis would make its way to both Windows and the Sega Dreamcast, as well as spawn two sequels. Recently, CD Projekt Red’s Good Old Games has remastered and updated the original Windows release for compatibility with modern PCs.
Dino Crisis Premise

The story of Dino Crisis takes place 10 years in the future from the game’s 1999 release, where a mysterious military installation draws the attention of the paramilitary group Secret Operation Raid Team (S.O.R.T.). When one of S.O.R.T.’s agents infiltrates the installation undercover to investigate the purpose of the research and weapons development there, he uncovers something threatening humanity’s very existence, prompting him to send a distress signal for backup. Four more agents from S.O.R.T. arrive only to discover that the island is a site of horrific carnage wrought by the products of the island’s research — a horde of dinosaurs who have overrun the island and killed its inhabitants.
In terms of its gameplay, Dino Crisis follows the general survival horror template that Capcom established with the Resident Evil series. Players control a singular protagonist as they navigate maze-like maps, solve puzzles, and eliminate enemies along the way as they incrementally progress toward their ultimate goal of escape. Unlike the Resident Evil games, though, Dino Crisis is the first Capcom survival horror game on the PS1 to utilize full 3D environments in favor of pre-rendered backgrounds. Players do still manage a limited inventory and need to carefully manage supplies, but Dino Crisis has a definitive lean toward action compared to the PS1 Resident Evil trilogy.
Notably, Dino Crisis features multiple choice-driven segments. Depending on players’ choices at these pivotal moments, the game will conclude with one of three endings.
Dino Crisis Main Characters

©Dino Crisis gameplay screenshot – Original
The plot of the original Dino Crisis takes place in the year 2009 and sees players assuming the role of S.O.R.T. agent Regina. A paramilitary organization, the Secret Operation Raid Team (S.O.R.T.) is dispatched to a secret facility on the mysterious Ibis Island where researcher Dr. Edward Kirk is working on a terrifying project – reviving and breeding dinosaurs. While the initial impression is that Kirk has somehow used genetic engineering to bring dinosaurs back into the modern era as biological weapons, players eventually learn that far more sinister scientific methods were used, threatening the very fabric of existence. The main characters in Dino Crisis include:
- Regina: The player protagonist and main character of Dino Crisis. Regina is an operative in the military black ops group S.O.R.T.
- Tom: Tom is Regina’s ally and S.O.R.T.’s inside man within Ibis Island. He infiltrates the island undercover and then requests backup once he realizes the scope of Dr. Kirk’s plans.
- Dr. Edward Kirk: Dr. Kirk is a morally grey researcher who is ultimately a pawn of those above him. He uses the mysterious Third Energy to bring dinosaurs into the modern era and begin breeding them as biological weapons.
Games in the Dino Crisis Series
Capcom’s Dino Crisis may have been inspired by the studio’s experience and success with the Resident Evil franchise, but it would quickly grow to earn its own series after a strong initial outing and equally acclaimed sequel. Just a year after the original Dino Crisis release, Capcom would launch Dino Crisis 2, which was another positively-received game. Notably, Dino Crisis 2 leans more into the action elements present in its predecessor, which would ultimately foreshadow the series’ direction for its third entry. The most recent game in the Dino Crisis series was released way back in 2006, though its place as a cult classic seems to indicate it may be due for a reboot from Capcom. Games in the Dino Crisis series include:
- Dino Crisis (PC, PlayStation, Dreamcast, 1999)
- Dino Crisis 2 (PC, PlayStation, 2000)
- Dino Crisis 3 (Xbox, 2006)

Dino Crisis Cheat FAQs
How do you use Code Disk H in Dino Crisis?
The items DDK Input Disk H and DDK Code Disk H can be combined to access the Chief’s Room.
Can you get infinite ammo in Dino Crisis?
It’s possible to get infinite ammo in Dino Crisis using one of two methods. The official way to get infinite ammo is to beat Dino Crisis 3 times to view all three endings, unlocking the infinite Grenade Gun for use on subsequent playthroughs. An alternative method involves using Game Shark cheats to have infinite ammo for all weapons, not just the Grenade Gun. Note that using this method requires either having a Game Shark device or an emulator with cheat functionality.
What is the lounge code in Dino Crisis?
The lounge is an area in the original Dino Crisis in which Regina will need to dispatch two velociraptors. After, it’s possible to safely explore the room and discover that there is a safe at the back of the lounge. The code to access this safe is 8159.
How long to beat Dino Crisis?
Dino Crisis is similar to Capcom’s other PS1-era survival horror games in that it’s relatively short in length. Most players can complete the main story in 5-7 hours, with one of the game’s unlockable rewards available to anyone who manages to clear the game in less than 5 hours. That said, the first playthroughs will likely take players longer as they learn the layouts of maps and decipher puzzles. Some of these early runs will take up to 10 hours.
