Originally released for the Sony PlayStation on August 26, 2000, Dragon Quest 7 is the seventh game in the legendary Dragon Quest series and the first 3D game in the franchise. Following its Japanese launch, the game would eventually arrive in the West as Dragon Warrior 7, the last game in the franchise to be localized with the Dragon Warrior naming before Dragon Quest became the global standard. Like the other games in the franchise, Dragon Quest 7 would prove to be a massive hit in Japan, selling just over 4 million units. Notably, Dragon Quest 7 is the single best-selling PlayStation game in Japan.
Sales of the game in Western markets would prove to be equally as successful, prompting Square Enix to make plans to release the remakes worldwide. While the Nintendo 3DS remake of Dragon Quest 7 would arrive in Japan in February 2013, it would take 3 more years for the title to make it stateside. Dragon Quest 7 would eventually release in North America on September 16, 2016, garnering strong critical praise and going on to become one of the best-selling 3DS games the week of its launch. To date, sales of the 3DS version are suspected to be around 1.2 million units.
Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past Premise
Like other games in Square Enix’s Dragon Quest series, Dragon Quest 7 begins by introducing players to a main character simply referred to as “The Hero” and their world. In the case of Dragon Quest 7, this is the world of Estard. A lone island in the middle of a vast sea, Estard is a relatively peaceful place that is free of conflict. But when the Hero’s father returns with a strange, ancient map depicting Estard surrounded by several continents, it becomes obvious that something terrible happened in the past. Together with his friends, the Hero sets off on a journey to uncover what happened to the other continents, discovering that he has the ability to travel back in time and right the wrongs of the past to change the present.
DQ7 is the first game in the series to utilize 3D environments and character models. That said, battles still take place from a first-person perspective in a 2D plane despite using the new 3D character models. This entry is also the first in the series where players can have conversations with their party members both inside and outside of battle, with the Hero’s allies offering helpful hints for strategy during encounters and reflecting on the journey thus far outside of battle. As players complete more of their journey, they add more continents to the map in the present day, which they can then further explore after progressing far enough and unlocking modes of transportation.
Aside from these main differences, Dragon Quest 7 is a fairly traditional JRPG that utilizes a class system similar to Dragon Quest 3. Players will still explore a world map, visit towns, and clear dungeons. Along the way, they will engage in turn-based battles that reward gold and experience, allowing players to level up and improve their stats.
Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past Main Characters
The story of Dragon Quest 7 follows the Hero and their 5 companions, with the 6 adventurers embarking on a time-traveling quest to set things right and restore the world they live in. Their journey begins after discovering an ancient map depicting the world being larger than it is currently. After an initial trip back through time, they return to the present to see that the world of Estard has expanded to include one of the continents on the older map, prompting the Hero to venture out in search of like-minded companions who can help him restore the world to its former prominence and defeat the Demon Lord Orgodemir. Main characters in Dragon Quest 7 include:
- Hero/Auster: The main character and protagonist of Dragon Quest 7, the hero (Auster in the 3DS version) is a resident of the town of Plichard Bay on Estard Island.
- Kiefer: The prince of Estard, Kiefer is more interested in spending time with his friends than his royal lineage, often leaving the castle to venture out with the Hero and Maribel.
- Maribel: Maribel is the daughter of the Mayor of Plichard Bay and a lifelong friend of both the Hero and Kiefer.
- Gabo/Ruff: Gabo looks like a human but is actually a white wolf who was turned into a boy.
- Melvin/Mervyn: Melvin is an ancient warrior who fought against the Demon Lord in the past. He is preserved in stone so that he can be awakened should the Demon Lord rise again.
- Aira/Aishe: Aira is a skilled dancer who belongs to an ancient tribe responsible for calling forth the Almighty in the event of the Demon Lord’s rise.
Games in the Dragon Quest Series
The Dragon Quest series is one of the most important and foundational in gaming, helping to establish the conventions of Japanese role-playing games at a time when the genre was almost completely dominated by Western developers. Building on the format first introduced in the seminal classic Wizardry, the first Dragon Quest would prove to be a massive hit in its native Japan, leading to a regular series of sequels. Each of these games would significantly improve on the formula of the first game in the series, inspiring other JRPG franchises and altering the course of the genre’s evolution as a result. The series now consists of 12 mainline entries, as well as several ports, spin-offs, and remakes of classic games in the legendary franchise. Games in the Dragon Quest series include:
- Dragon Quest (1986)

Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past Cheat FAQs
What is the name of the main character in Dragon Quest 7?
Similar to other games in the Dragon Quest series, the protagonist of Dragon Quest 7 is a player-named character. Other characters in the game will simply refer to him as Hero or The Hero, regardless of what players choose to name the main character. However, the official manga adaptation and English localization of the Nintendo 3DS version do ascribe names to the main character. In the official manga adaptation, the main character of Dragon Quest 7 goes by the name Arus. In the English localization of the 3DS version, Dragon Quest 7‘s hero is named Auster.
What is the name of the world in Dragon Quest 7?
The world in Dragon Quest 7 goes by the name Estard. In the present when the game’s story begins, Estard is a solitary island that used to be a nexus between many continents. The game’s hero and his companions travel back in time and solve problems that lead to the continents reappearing in the present day, filling out the landmass to restore Estard to its former glory.
Do I need to play the other games in the series before Dragon Quest 7?
The question of where to begin in the Dragon Quest series is a tricky one. While conventional wisdom suggests that players should start with the first game and play them all in order, the stories of the Dragon Quest games abide by a unique structure that makes this unnecessary. Further, the innovations that each new series entry brings make playing older games somewhat more difficult thanks to them lacking certain quality-of-life features that newer entries have. Dragon Quest 7 is both the first fully 3D game in the series and the first game not connected to any other entry in the series. Conversely, the first three Dragon Quest games are all part of a connected trilogy (the Erdrick Trilogy), as are the 4th, 5th, and 6th games in the series (the Zenithia Trilogy).
How long to beat Dragon Quest 7?
Famously, Dragon Quest 7 is one of the longest games in the series. Just beating the main story is likely to take most players around 75-80 hours. Factoring in side quests, collecting all the Mini-Medals, and fully completing 100% of the game extends total playtime well beyond that target. Most players who plan on fully completing Dragon Quest 7 can expect to spend 155-165 hours doing so.
