DSi and DSi XL Prices Dropping Soon

DSi and DSi XL Prices Dropping Soon

None

We have just received a press release from Nintendo that announced a price drop for both the DSi and the more recently released DSi XL. Both handhelds will be coming in twenty dollars cheaper after September 12, with the DSi positioned at $149.99 and the DSi XL clocking in at $169.99. Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing Cammie Dunaway states “Our new Nintendo DSi prices make it easier than ever for consumers to access the tremendous variety of games, applications and social tools on the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL systems.”

While this price drop is certainly great news for those looking to pick up either of these handhelds, this may also be a positive signal for those awaiting Nintendo’s next handheld, the 3DS. First off, the date of this move would seem to imply that we may be getting the 3DS sooner than we have anticipated, with price drops of older systems typically being associated with the release of their successors. Secondly, dropping the price of the most expensive DS on the market, the DSi XL at $189.99, to $169.99 would seem to create some breathing room for a possible $200 or $250 3DS, making the rumored $300 price point seem less likely. This, of course, is speculation, but some interesting food for thought none the less. Nintendo will be making an official announcement concerning the pricing and release date of the 3DS September 29.
