Even Teasing, Give Us a Mega Man Game

Even Teasing, Give Us a Mega Man Game

Have you ever had that feeling something is coming? That the constant lead-up of cameos, merchandise, and classic game re-releases are building hype for an event? My gamer-sense has been tingling ever since Mega Man was announced for Super Smash Bros. and that August Mega Man eShop run was announced. It feels like Capcom is preparing us for something, but forgot to tell us what.

It’s not uncommon to find talk online about Mega Man being dead. He last starred in Rockman Xover in 2012, but I don’t think we can even count that as a game. As someone who went above and beyond to play the Japanese version on my tablet, I can assure you we missed nothing when Capcom passed on localizing it. Yet, despite the talk about his demise, the Blue Bomber is constantly resurrected.

Take merchandise, as an example. Capcom is constantly releasing things like Mega Man helmets, arm cannons, hoodies, and figures. The company isn’t releasing games, but it’s certainly doing all it can to keep the character alive via memorabilia.

The same goes for the classic games. Capcom has made sure that the original Mega Man NES, SNES, Game Boy, and Game Boy Advance titles were released on the Wii U and 3DS Virtual Consoles. It worked with Nintendo to release Mega Man games every week in August 2014. Capitalizing on a back catalog is one thing, but such methodical releases suggest something else.

Then, there are the cameos. Mega Man has been making a lot of appearances lately, hasn’t he? He’s showing up in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate , in a way, via Palico armor. He’s a prominent fighter in Super Smash Bros , and the Wii U verson will have Roll, Proto Man, Zero, and Bass and Treble trophies. He was in Street Fighter X Tekken , and of course there was a Mega Man X costume in Dead Rising 3 .

I know this will probably sound like some kind of conspiracy theory, but I think Capcom is leading up to something. Even though all these appearances may appear to be the act of a company milking a popular character for money, I think it could be hinting at something greater. Perhaps I’m being a hopeful optimist, but it seems like Capcom is doing all of this to keep Mega Man on our minds. The company could have something planned, perhaps to compete with Mighty No. 9 , and is using all of this filler to keep our minds on Mega Man until it feels like making an announcement.
