Everything We Know About GTA 6 From the Newest Trailer
Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 6 might be the most highly anticipated game in history. For evidence of how feverishly GTA fans are awaiting the next mainline entry in Rockstar's satirical send-up of American culture and criminal underworld, look no further than the first trailer for the game released by Rockstar. After gaining a record-breaking 95 million views in just 24 hours, the trailer has only continued gaining traction as Rockstar has been hesitant to release any new information. Until that is, the recent surprise drop of the newest trailer for GTA 6. To coincide with the announcement of Grand Theft Auto 6's official release date — and, perhaps, to smooth over the news of a delay — Rockstar Games has released a second trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 that gives us a lot more info other than just when we can expect to get our hands on the title.
From dropping hints about the scope and scale of GTA 6 to giving us more info on the personalities and backstories of the game's compelling dual protagonists, the second GTA 6 trailer was positively bursting with new details to whet fans' appetites over the next year. We got a look at both the reimagined Vice City as well as the greater state of Leonida (an obvious stand-in for Florida) and its various biomes, the game will take us to. We get glimpses of several important side characters, each of whom seems to be bursting with the trademark off-the-wall personalities that Rockstar is famous for crafting. Most importantly, we got to see a mixture of both gameplay and cinematics showcasing how impressive and detail-rich GTA 6's world will be, making the wait til May 26, 2026, all the more worth it.
Grand Theft Auto 6 Finally Has an Official Release Date
The most important bit of news we get from the newest GTA 6 trailer is something that's been the subject of speculation up to this point: Grand Theft Auto 6's official release date. After an initial planned launch for fall of 2025 — one that saw several major publishers and developers delay or advance the release of their games in anticipation of not wanting to compete with the seismic drop of GTA 6 — we now know that Grand Theft Auto 6 has a locked-in release date of May 26, 2026.
While it is a bit disappointing to know that the wait for GTA 6 will last another year, we at least have confirmation that the game will be arriving on current-gen consoles and is even up for preorder as we speak. However, what has yet to be confirmed is a PC release. But given the GTA series' success on PC, a release through both Steam and the Rockstar Games Launcher seems likely.
Rockstar Has Confirmed Trailer Footage is Running on PS5
While the first GTA 6 trailer was mostly in-game cinematics, the newest trailer finally gives us our first glimpses of gameplay. Better yet, Rockstar Games has come out and announced that the footage shown off in the trailer is running on a base model PS5. The visual polish and stunning detail shown off in both GTA 6 trailers seemed to indicate that the footage we were seeing must have been running on a PS5 Pro or high-end gaming PC, but Rockstar's assertion that the footage is running on a 5-year-old console is reassuring and impressive. Once again, it's clear that the talented developers at Rockstar are squeezing every bit of power out of the studio's proprietary RAGE engine, much like they did with Red Dead Redemption 2 on last-gen consoles.
We Know More About GTA 6's Protagonists: Lucia and Jason
After first getting a glimpse of the duo in the first trailer, the newest GTA 6 trailer spent a lot more time letting us get to know the game's two protagonists — Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. The trailer starts off with us following Jason through a day in his life as a street-level criminal involved in drug running and debt collections before we see him arrive at the Leonida State Penitentiary to pick up Lucia, who is just getting out after what seems to be an extended stay in prison. But unlike previous GTA games, the protagonists for Grand Theft Auto 6 are romantic partners, which gives the game a new narrative hook that will be interesting to see play out.
Both Jason and Lucia voice dreams of breaking out of their cycle stuck in low-level criminal activity to do something "big", and we gradually see them take bigger and bigger risks as part of that dream as the trailer plays out. Rockstar's previous comments about Grand Theft Auto 6 indicate that the game houses a "Bonnie and Clyde" story for Jason and Lucia, so only time will tell if their adventure in the game has a similarly tragic ending.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is Breaking Out of Vice City
One of the more exciting aspects revealed in the first GTA 6 trailer was the game's location. For the first time since 2002's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, players get to return to that titular hedonistic paradise modeled after the real-world Miami, FL. But with advancements in technology and decades of evolving the GTA formula, Rockstar Games now has the tools to go far beyond what we saw in that PS2 classic. Grand Theft Auto 6 takes place not just in Vice City, but in the state of Leonida. Like the real state of Florida it takes inspiration from, players will be able to visit some fairly diverse locations in Leonida, such as GTA 6's version of the Florida Keys and the Everglades National Park.
Grand Theft Auto 6 Could Have Some Interesting Side Activities
Along with getting to know more about GTA 6's protagonists, the newest trailer also showed off plenty of colorful side characters that players will spend their time rubbing elbows with in the game's story mode. Two of these characters, Boobie Ike and Dre'Quan Priest, seem to run a strip club that also doubles as a financial backing for the pair's musical ventures. We catch a glimpse of an aspiring rap duo that the two are promoting, the Real Dimez, complete with plenty of in-studio footage. Given the Grand Theft Auto series' proclivity toward interesting and unique side activities, it's possible that there could be an entire line of missions related to dabbling in Vice City's hip-hop culture.
Beyond that possibility, though, we do have confirmation of a wide variety of optional activities players can take part in from the newest trailer. Aside from completing missions and engaging in heists, Jason and Lucia can spend time playing pool, fishing, kayaking, playing basketball, and more.
Animals and Wildlife Might Play a Major Role in GTA 6
The hunting missions in Red Dead Redemption 2 were so good that they could have stood on their own as an entirely separate game. So it comes as no surprise to see that wildlife seems to play a much bigger role in GTA 6. One of the major locations players will spend their time in in GTA 6 is the Mount Kalaga National Park, which has some obvious inspirations from Florida's Everglades National Park and protected wetlands. It's possible that several of the missions in this area could involve interacting with wildlife or hunting, and there could even be an entire bounty system in play for capturing and containing rare, dangerous animals.
But wildlife is far from the only animals showcased in the newest GTA 6 trailer. Alongside animals out in the wild, it seems that Jason and Lucia will potentially have the ability to buy and keep pets, which would serve as yet another layer of immersion for the homestead system from GTA V. Alongside buying cars and furniture to deck out virtual living spaces, players may be able to own cats, dogs, birds, or fish, which is only given further credence by the fact that part of the gameplay in the trailer shows off a snake in Jason and Lucia's house.
