Far Cry 3 Cheats & Secrets for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360

Ubisoft’s Far Cry 3 was originally released on November 29, 2012, and would go on to lay the foundation for future games in the Far Cry series. The title is a first-person shooter that incorporates RPG, survival, and open-world elements, allowing players more freedom of expression than most other FPS titles of the era and earning plenty of acclaim for doing so. Notably, the team at Ubisoft Montreal cites The Elder Scrolls as a major influence on Far Cry 3‘s development, wanting to push beyond the foundations of the first two games in the series to offer players an immersive world with plenty of flexibility in its systems.

Far Cry 3 would end up becoming a major success both critically and commercially, going on to earn several nominations (and even some wins) for both Action Game of the Year and Game of the Year for 2012. The title would quickly sell nearly 5 million units before the end of 2012, and by 2014 Ubisoft would report that Far Cry 3 had moved a total of 10 million units across all platforms. Between its plot and its gameplay, Far Cry 3 is commonly recognized as being one of the best (if not the best) games in the series.

Fry Cry 3 Premise

Far Cry 3 gameplay

Like the first game in the series, Far Cry 3‘s story takes a scenic, beautiful setting and transforms it into a deadly warzone, courtesy of a pesky group of pirates and their drug trafficking operation. When affluent youth Jason Brody and his friends accidentally come into contact with these pirates, they find themselves out of their depth and are quickly held prisoner. Jason manages to escape, heading out on a one-man rescue and revenge mission to free his friends and kill their captors.

In terms of its gameplay, Far Cry 3 is the first game in the series to adopt a fully-open world and implement RPG-style character progression. Players earn experience for everything they do across the game’s large map, which they can allocate toward skills that improve their handling of firearms, their stealth, or their traversal abilities. Liberating outposts and reactivating radio towers are key components of the gameplay loop that result in players having more support from the island’s residents and greater visibility on the map, respectively. The moment-to-moment gameplay is still based on common first-person shooter mechanics, but players have freedom in the way they approach objectives and fight enemies.

Far Cry 3 Main Characters

Far Cry 3 gameplay

The story to Far Cry 3 begins with a group of friends vacationing in an island paradise, only to have their idyllic getaway cut short by tragedy. After running afoul of a group of pirates, the friends are kidnapped and held prisoner, cut loose into the jungle at the whims of the sadistic madman Vaas. Once the player character, Jason Brody, escapes, he begins to work toward rescuing the rest of his party while also growing strong enough to take revenge against Vaas and the powers that control him and the rest of the island pirates. Main characters in Far Cry 3 include:

  • Jason Brody: The player character and main protagonist of Far Cry 3. Jason is a young man from a privileged family who must forget all he knows and fight for survival if he is to rescue his brother, girlfriend, and the rest of their travel group.
  • Citra: Citra is a member of the Rakyat tribe who is one of the few people willing to help Jason. Her alliance with Jason will shift depending on his willingness to become the Rakyat’s “Ultimate Warrior”.
  • Vaas: Vaas is the game’s initial antagonist and a sadistic madman who leads the pirates controlling the island. He is cruel and callous and serves as Hoyt’s right-hand man.
  • Hoyt: The true leader of the criminal enterprise on Far Cry 3‘s island, Hoyt Volker is eventually revealed to be the main antagonist of the game and the final barrier preventing Jason’s escape from the island.

Games in the Far Cry Series

The Far Cry series’ origins date back to the first game from developer Crytek, who would go on to work on the Crysis games while selling the IP to Ubisoft. Ubisoft’s first entry in the franchise was Far Cry 2, which blended the open-world elements of the first title with unique approaches to gameplay involving survival mechanics and a unique faction system. The company would further develop these ideas in Far Cry 3, transitioning the series to a fully open-world sandbox with RPG-style progression and non-linear approach to storytelling. Far Cry 3‘s universal critical acclaim and success would pave the way for future entries to follow in its footsteps, with Ubisoft now having 3 more mainline Far Cry games and several spin-offs that utilize the open-world formula pioneered in Far Cry 3. Games in the Far Cry series include:

  • Far Cry (PC, 2004)
  • Far Cry Instincts (Xbox, 2005)

No Enemies or Wildlife

During the main story mission “Fly South”, players will jump out of a plane with the Wingsuit equipped. Instead of flying to the objective marker to start the mission, you can head to any other location on the map to find that there are no enemies or wildlife present. Enemies and animals will not spawn until you head to the mission’s objective marker, and you can take advantage of their absence for easy outpost liberation.

Easy Outpost Liberation

One of the best methods for liberating an outpost doesn’t even involve firing a single shot. Instead of engaging enemies head-on, use stealth to stick to the shadows, scanning the whole outpost and tagging enemies with your camera. Once you have scanned the whole outpost, find a hiding spot away from enemies but with a good line of sight on the animal cage. Use a weapon with a suppressor to shoot the cage, and eventually, the animal will break free. This will cause all enemies in the area to respond, and the wild animal will liberate the outpost for you by eliminating any enemies. Doing this twice (liberating an outpost without ever being detected) will also unlock the “Ninja Step” skill for better stealth.

Keeping an Eye Out for Crocodiles

Crocodiles can instantly kill players if they’re not careful, but there’s a trick to spotting them. These animals almost always appear in bodies of water where lotus flowers are nearby. Use the Reurve Bow to kill them in a single shot.

Spotting Objectives

At any point during gameplay, players can head to an elevated position on the map (such as the top of a mountain) and pull out their camera to see all the objectives highlighted.

Super Bounces

While wearing the Wingsuit, landing on power lines will grant a brief “super bounce” back up into the air.

‘Breaking Bad’ Reference

Finding Memory Card 16 grants a fun Easter Egg referencing the critically acclaimed AMC drama Breaking Bad. The data on the card references the pirates losing the drug trafficking business to a new type of crystal methamphetamine coming out of New Mexico.

Easy “Aftermarket Junkie” Achievement

Players can easily obtain the “Aftermarket Junkie” achievement with the game’s starting pistol, the 1911. Players will need to buy this pistol for $60 as part of the main quest, and buying every camo available for the weapon costs another $1200. Since the 1911 has no attachments, the total cost of unlocking the achievement is $1260.

Easy “Fearless or Stupid” Achievement

Head to any of the dark blue portions of the ocean that show up on your map. These are the deepest parts of the ocean. Note that you’ll need to activate some of the Radio Towers for these spots to show up. After reaching one of the dark blue portions, dive down to the bottom to unlock the achievement. You can use dash to swim faster.

Easy “Free Fall” Achievement

Head to the following coordinates — X: 442.4, Y: 651.1. Here, you’ll find a glider at the top of a high mountain, which you must climb up to reach. Once you reach the glider, use it. Do not steer while you are in the air, just keep gliding until you reach the ocean. Once you are over the ocean, exit the glider. You will then fall into the water and unlock the achievement.

Alternatively, players can easily unlock the “Free Fall” achievement during the “Fly South” mission. After jumping out of the plane, simply fall into the ocean instead of activating the Wingsuit.

Easy “Hunter Hunted” Achievement

Killing any of the following animals is the easiest way to unlock this achievement: Crocodiles, Komodos, Leopards, Sharks, and Tigers. Find any area on the map containing these types of animals (indicated with their icon) and run around until one of them starts attacking you. Kill the animal after it attacks you to unlock the achievement.

Easy “Improper Use” Achievement

Get the Repair Tool from a weapon locker or general store. You can either buy it or activate radio towers to get it for free. It can be found under the “Special” objects section at the general store. Equip the Repair Tool and find an enemy. Burn the enemy with the Repair Tool by “using” it on them to unlock the achievement.

Easy “Love the Boom” Achievement

Get an explosive weapon from a weapon locker or general store. It’s recommended to use the RPG-7. Afterward, head to the Welshore Wrecker’s House Outpost (coordinates X: 437.9, Y: 795.0) and make some noise until the enemies activate the alarm. Wait for the reinforcement jeeps to arrive while allowing at least one outpost enemy to survive. Watch for a Jeep with four soldiers inside and shoot it with the rocket launcher before they get out to unlock the achievement.

Alternatively, players can easily unlock this achievement using C4. Head to an outpost, plant some C4, then wait for enemies to group around the locations where the explosives are waiting. Detonate the C4 when 4 or more soldiers get close to unlock the achievement.

Easy “Never Saw It Coming” Achievement

Before players can unlock this achievement, they will first need to purchase the “Death From Above” skill. This will allow players to perform a stealth takedown while jumping on enemies. Jumping down while using a zipline is the easiest way to get this achievement. During “The Medusa’s Call” mission, throw some stones to lure enemies underneath the zipline that’s near the mission location. With the guards in place, use the zipline and jump on the enemies to kill them and unlock the achievement.

Easy “Say Hi To The Internet” Achievement

The lost Hollywood star can be found at the following coordinates — X: 619.7, Y: 559.4. Players can reach this location early in the main story. Stay on the beach and look for two dead people that are hanging on a tree. Nearby is a man buried in the sand, and you can only see his head. Walk up to the buried man and press [Interact] to unlock the achievement.

Easy “The Good Stuff” Achievement

After collecting 30 Relics, players will unlock a recipe for a special syringe called “Untouchable”, which allows them to become invulnerable for a few seconds. To craft it, players will need 5 Blue Leaves, 5 Green Leaves, and 2 White Leaves. Crafting this syringe will unlock the achievement.

Easy “Toxophilite” Achievement

After obtaining the Recurve Bow, purchase and equip the Marksman Sight for better long-range shots. Find a location on the map with some enemies, tag one with your camera, and start walking away until the marker shows a distance of more than 70 meters. Shoot the enemy while they are standing still to unlock the achievement. One of the easiest, and earliest, places to do this is at the Welshore Wrecker’s House Outpost (coordinates X: 437.9, Y: 795.0).

Far Cry 3 Cheat FAQs

Are there cheats in Far Cry 3?

The only version of Far Cry 3 that supports cheats is the PC version. The console versions of the title do not have any official cheats. That said, there are plenty of secrets for players to uncover in the game’s massive open-world sandbox.

Is Far Cry 3 the best Far Cry game?

The question of which Far Cry game is the “best” is one that primarily relies on subjective opinion, but there are several objective factors that point to Far Cry 3 being the best game in the series. Notably, the open-world map and RPG-style progression of Far Cry 3 have served as the foundations for the series’ gameplay loop moving forward, with each subsequent game adhering to the same formula introduced in Far Cry 3. Additionally, Far Cry 3 is the highest-rated game in the series, with a review aggregate score of 91% positive reviews. Together, these factors point to it being the best game in the franchise, but it also earns that title thanks to its excellent story and compelling villain.

How do you unlock God Mode in Far Cry 3?

The “God Mode” cheat is only available in the PC release of Far Cry 3 and requires players to adjust the game’s properties in Steam. Inside the Steam library, right-clicking on the game and selecting Properties will give players the option to select Set Launch Options. Inside this field, putting in the command -GameProfile_GodMode 1 will allow players to start the game with God Mode active. With this cheat active, players are invincible.

How long to beat Far Cry 3?

For most players, completing the main story in Far Cry 3 will take anywhere from 15-20 hours. Unlocking all achievements and completing all optional content will nearly double this length, with 100% completionist playthroughs taking anywhere from 35-45 hours.
