The follow-up to the excellent Fire Emblem Awakening, Fire Emblem Fates is a duo of games in the Fire Emblem series with linked storylines. Originally released in June 2015, both Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest launched simultaneously, with players able to experience the same conflict from different sides depending on which title they chose to play first. Where Birthright focuses on the fictional nation of Hoshido (which has an Asian influence in its themes and culture), Conquest focuses on the nation of Nohr (which is modeled after medieval Europe). Following the launch of the mainline Fates games, Nintendo would release a final epilogue chapter players could download titled Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation.
Similar to Awakening, both Fates games received strong critical praise and impressive sales figures. Prior to the release of Awakening, Nintendo had plans to abandon the Fire Emblem franchise in the West, but both Awakening and the Fates games helped establish the series’ strong foothold among North American RPG fans. In addition to strong critical praise, the combined sales of both Fates games across physical and digital versions is estimated to be 3 million units.

The story of Fire Emblem Fates is split into two mainline games and third, epilogue chapter. Regardless of which game players start with, the main conflict and plot are similar. Two nations, Nohr and Hoshido, have been locked in a seemingly endless conflict, maintaining a fragile peace after an exchange between the two nations for rival members of the royal family. In Birthright, the player character returns to their rightful home of Hoshido and mobilizes its forces against the nation of Nohr. Hoshido’s cities and towns (as well as the game’s classes and their abilities) take heavy influence from the cultures and history of Asia.
Similar to other games in the series, Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright is a turn-based tactics RPG. Players control a group of units and can maneuver them around grid-based maps. Depending on unit type and abilities, players can attack enemies from range or up close using melee abilities and magic. Environmental assets like terrain and foliage influence the outcome of battles, which players get to view from a zoomed-in, third-person perspective when engaging foes on the battlefield. Players can form bonds with other units to help strengthen their allies and improve battle prowess, a signature element of the Fire Emblem franchise.
Beating the main story of Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright unlocks the ability to carry select units over into Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest. The reverse is also true. Additionally, after beating both Birthright and Conquest, players can play through a third and final chapter Revelation.
Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright Main Characters

The story of Fire Emblem Fates differs depending on which version of the game players pick up, but the core conflict remains the same. Two nations, Nohr and Hoshido, are locked into a bitter conflict. As the main character (whose canon name is Corrin), Birthright places the player as a young Nohr noble returning to their rightful home of Hoshido. Together with their siblings in the Hoshidan royal family, the player works to convince the Nohrians of a greater threat pulling the strings of both nations, hoping to end the conflict once and for all. Main characters in Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright include:
- Corrin: The main player character, Corrin is a member of the Hoshidan royal family with the power to transform into a dragon and wield the holy blade Yato. He vows to end the senseless bloodshed between the nations of Nohr and Hoshido.
- Azura: Corrin’s counterpart, Azura is a member of the Nohrian royal family who is given to Hoshido in exchange for Corrin when the two are just children. As adults, Azura and Corrin ally together.
- Garon: Corrin’s guardian for the Nohr royal family and the main antagonist of the Fire Emblem Fates games. He manipulates Corrin under the influence of a greater, unseen evil.
Games in the Fire Emblem Series
After spending many years as a more obscure title with a niche fanbase, Nintendo and the Fire Emblem franchise would achieve mainstream success with the series’ first 3DS entry, Fire Emblem Awakening. Since then, Nintendo continues to invest in the Fire Emblem franchise as the company’s flagship first-party RPG. The two most recent entries on Nintendo Switch represent the twin halves of the Fire Emblem franchise. While Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a new mainline entry with plenty of new mechanics and evolutions to the classic Fire Emblem formula, Fire Emblem Engage is a more classically styled entry that focuses on the series’ excellent turn-based combat. Games in the Fire Emblem series include:
- Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light (Famicom, 1990)
- Gaiden (Famicom, 1992)

Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright Cheat FAQs
What is the max level in Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright?
Level caps in Fire Emblem work slightly differently than in other RPGs. The level cap for a base class is 20, but players can promote those classes to newer, advanced classes. The level cap for promotions is also 20. However, using Eternal Seals, players can continually raise the level of promoted classes to 99. Through careful strategization and planning, players can create incredibly powerful units.
Can you save Lilith in Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright?
Unfortunately, no. Lilith’s death in Fire Emblem Fates is a predetermined story event. She will die after Chapter 24 in Birthright and after Chapter 21 in Conquest.
How do you farm money in Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright?
Players finding themselves strapped for cash can easily farm gold by finding units with the Profiteer skill. Visit different castles/towns and recruit units with the Profiteer skill. Level these characters up, making sure to raise their Luck stat whenever possible. Doing so will see each one earn thousands of gold at the end of each battle.
How long to beat Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright?
On average, most players will spend between 30-40 hours beating the main story of Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright. However, Birthright is one-half of the experience, and players can also carry their save file over into Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest. Owning and beating both also opens up the third and final segment, Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation. Altogether, a completionist playthrough of the Fire Emblem Fates experience will take players 80-100 hours.
